ONE-DAY SALES: RED AND GREEN!
Aldean's Big Bow Gives Distribbery Another Monster, While McCreery, Brandy, Anberlin, Fagen Mark Other Key Debuts
October 17, 2012
Broken Bow’s Country troubadour Jason Aldean is on track to score a ten-gallon debut—and land distributor RED its fourth straight week at #1—with first-week sales somewhere between 385-410k. Along with prior chart dominators Mumford, Aldean’s boffo bow (the biggest of his career) nabs RED the top two earners of the year so far. Taylor Swift's encroaching monster, of course, will make that a short-lived milestone.
In other country news, 19/Mercury Nashville/Interscope artist Scotty McCreery will pull down 35-40k with his holiday offering, Christmas With Scotty McCreery. This well-scrubbed crooner is the first American Idol champ to be born in the ’90s, in case you didn’t feel old enough.
And Jamey Johnson will move 25-30k with another Mercury Nashville release, Living for a Song, a set paying tribute to the great Hank Cochran.
R&B siren Brandy looks set to put 65-70k on the board with her new RCA set, Two Eleven.
Republic’s Florida-bred rockers Anberlin will sell in the vicinity of 18-22k, while cartoon dark-metal troupe Dethklok have not only prevented mass fan suicides but set expectations of 15-18k sales for Williams Street’s new Metalocalypse disc.
And in case you still don’t feel old enough, Steely Dan co-mastermind Donald Fagen will motivate 14-17k for his new Reprise solo disc, Sunken Condos.

Considering how everyone was saying how bad Human flopped (including Brandy herself) it opened with basically that same amount (73k). So that is disappointing. Damn, great numbers for Jason! :o

This will be Brandy's first Top 5 album in 8 years so I'm happy about that. I just hope it doesn't drop too much after the 1st week.

That's the biggest opening for a male Country artist since Kenny Chesney's The Road and the Radio opened with 469k in 2005.

Damn, great numbers for Jason! :o Except that was compared to the old Brady's selling power. This is much more in line with what she is able to do. She'll probably sell like 200k in the long run, and maybe more if she can squeeze a couple of singles out of the project. I'd say these numbers were actually MORE than I expected.

Its crazy how much R&B album sales have declined. That prediction is still solid for B-Rocka especially considering her major TV promo didn't really start until yesterday. I still think word of mouth will give the album legs.

Those numbers are good for Brandy in this day and age. She's not a pop star anymore and still about to do the same as Miguel did couple of weeks ago.

Those sales are normal for R&B artists these days. So i think Brandy is doing great. "Put It Down" is obviously not a big album seller. It's just a big R&B hit.

Incredible for Aldean!!! Not a huge fan, but that's impressive for any Country artist other than Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, and Taylor Swift.

Even better numbers! From HITS:
NIGHT TRAIN ON TRACKS: It looks like Broken Bow's Jason Aldean is holding up well after a strong first day. Second day reports suggest his projections are even a little higher at several key accounts. It now appears that 400k may be the floor. How high will it go? Watch for our midweek story later this afternoon. (10/18a)

^ There were some pictures of him in a bar, drunk, hugging and allegedly giving a kiss to this girl that was not his wife. After they were published online, lots of his fans were saying how they were done with him and would never buy his music again.

Jason cheated on his wife. It was caught by TMZ. He was dancing with and kissing Brittany Kerr, and American Idol-reject who is a cheerleader for an NBA team (the Bobcats, I believe).
Nearly every country music blog and website covered the story. Jason apologized publicly on his Facebook page, asking for privacy so that he could work it out with his family. He's been married for 11 years (IIRC) and his wife is his high school sweetheart. Jason said he made a mistake, got drunk, and things got way out of hand.
Honestly, though, I really don't think it was gonna affect his numbers all that much. People like his music. Sure, some of his fans probably decided not to buy the album, but the hype around his music and success has drawn in plenty of people who weren't fans before. Aside from Taylor, he's the biggest country star out there right now.
I'm not saying what he did wasn't bad. Cheating on a spouse is a horrible thing to do. I felt sick when I heard about it, and it's not like I know them personally. But I still bought his album. I accepted his apology, and I can only hope that he works out his personal issues and becomes a better person. The person who was on the losing end here was his wife. She's the one that Jason needs to fix things with. I feel bad for her, but I never like seeing a marriage come to an end, so I hope they are able to get through this. Ultimately, it's probably gonna be up to her, though.

If people still buy Chris Brown's album, they will still buy Jason's album.

If people still buy Chris Brown's album, they will still buy Jason's album. Urban fans and Country fans are very different in regards to the kind of comments and behavior they permit from artists.

If people still buy Chris Brown's album, they will still buy Jason's album. Chris beat on a woman, a woman the world loves and respects. Jason kissed a woman who no one cares about, the comparison is practically nonexistent if you ask me. Then there's the fact that their respective audiences have very different attitudes when it comes to this stuff...

I think if Carrie Underwood had been photographed kissing another man in a bar a couple weeks before Blown Away was released, then she would have faced a bigger sales hit than Jason is now. Male artists in country get more leeway than female ones in terms of acceptable behavior, though in an "adulterous" situation, a female artist can be forgiven if the man she is cheating with is an equal/bigger country star and they end up being a country supercouple. Then everybody thinks, oh they're musical soulmates who belong together, and then they get to be country royalty. But if she's married and just hooking up with random guys, I think quite a few country fans would be very judgmental about that.
My Kinda Party had a 193K opening week and Night Train will at least double that.

NEXT WEEK'S TOP 15: Jason Aldean will give RED the top two albums and a fourth week at #1 behind three weeks for Mumford & Sons. Aldean and Mumford give RED the top two albums of the week, the top two debuts of the year and fourth week at #1. A different Red will take over next week, however, as Taylor Swift's new album is expected to push 1m in first-week sales. Oh, and Sony could see as many as six titles in the Top 10. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend.
* Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 400-420k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 75-80k * Brandy (RCA) 65-70k * Scotty McCreery (19/Mercury Nashville/Interscope) 35-40k P!nk (RCA) 30-35k * Jamey Johnson (Mercury Nashville) 27-30k Miguel (RCA) 21-24k Little Big Town (Capitol Nashville) 21-24k Adele (XL/Columbia) 19-22k Kiss (UMe) 17-20k Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) 17-20k * Anberlin (Republic) 17-20k Muse (Warner Bros.) 17-20k MGK (Interscope) 17-20k Metalocalypse: Dethklok (Williams Street) 15-18k
