I think the discussion, which started with some interesting points of debate, is now either stalled or starting to derail. I concur with what Azriel mentioned before. Songs with a huge first-week bullet have different ways of behaving. There is no much historical information either to come up with a conclusion yet. Born this way and WANEGBT are the best examples of songs that kept going. Then we have the turds like GMAYL and Judas, which flew up the chart, slowed down and then died. But then we have the example of a song that flew, slowed and stabilized albeit in a not so high position, like You Da One. Finally we have the example of Boyfriend, which shoot up, then slowed down and decreased spins, but then recovered and made it to the top 10. So really not many trends to know what can happen. The only commonality is that all of them slowed down. S&T has been a great seller! I really don't get the argument otherwise. I guess Demi Lovatto and Let's Go received shitloads of payola. Those were examples of songs with 'low' sales but reached top 10 in pop. I guess Calvin Harris is a payola king since Sweet Nothing is doing better than S&T but not selling as much. If anything, people were saying that it's sales were front loaded due to hype but soon it'd leave the top 10 iTunes and never come back. That hasn't been true. Promotion can only help so much. If people don't like a song they won't buy it even if they hear the song multiple times. Just ask Alicia Keys! Finally maybe I'm not reading as much music media but I haven't heard JT claiming arrogantly that he wants to change pop radio or that he thinks his new stuff is the best new shit for pop. I'm really quite lost about the arguments in this debate

Did "Judas" receive a CC deal, though? I know BTW was the first one (although that got huge airplay from non-CC stations, and it lasted multiple days, so even that might not have been a "deal") but I think no one is really sure of Judas. Idk, though.

I don't recall anything for Judas, I just think GaGa hyped the hell out of it and people were rather generally disappointed so it brickwalled fast.
There's been far less general dislike for Suit & Tie though, which is why it hasn't outright died, because people are still feeling the song and/or warming up to it.

I guess it really doesn't matter though-I do think a lot will ride on how much he sells with his album. If he does open with 500K+ I think it will be hard to say that it was only a payola hit that everyone hates. Then certain people will just say he had such a big week due to the hype he's built up from such a long break, or whatever it sells, some will say it should have sold more considering the hype he built up during his break from music. Those dead set on downplaying the achievements of this song, the album, and the artist will always find a way.

"Until The End Of Time" didn't make the top 10. And this one isn't official yet.

i had to stop catching up on this thread because i was getting a headache but please let me just say: i am 17 and go to a public high school. i would have to say 99% of my friends love this song. i am white and the majority of my friends are. i know some people think no one likes this song, but if my told friends this was being said on what i consider a pretty intelligent message board, they would think im insane. literally everyone loves this here. i love this song too. and im not big on urban music either. this is just a good song. took a few listens to grow, but after that i loved it. i dont think it is fair seeing so many posters saying this is getting negative recpetion. my school has maybe 2000 kids in it, and i know maybe 500 of them or so, and everyone on twitter and facebook loves it.... so i would deff think it is safe to say this is clicking with the teen demographic I am a young teacher at a school of 3000, very diverse with 33% white, 33% Asian and Indian, 33% black, all middle to upper middle class. Throughout my classes and my 70+ girls I coach the feedback on this is laughably bad. I'd say 99% of the kids DON'T like it. I have no reason to make this up, just putting a point out there. Hi, I hope you don't take this the wrong way but with all due respect I don't think any of this is really the case. I think you are just throwing numbers out to fit your point and everything seems so perfect number wise . In a school of 3000 there is no way you know what kids feel to say 99% do not like this song, sorry. I think as a teacher you have a lot of work and responsibility in your day and things that are far more important than surveying kids on "Suit & Tie"?

I apologize, I run the school's radio station so of course we talk about it. We have a weekly survey where students are asked to tweet replies to songs we play. This song had nearly 99% #bad, #no, #lose (we have songs go against others so we know what to play).
I'm not saying by any means to use these statistics, but it's more of a "for what it's worth" comment.
Jerzboy +1 this!

I just don't understand that with all of my posts discussing how much I like JT, that if I say one thing bad about this song, I have about eight people jump on me like I'm talking bad about their mothers. Isn't this a forum where we can debate? I respect your opinions, respect mine. Think I'm crazy, insane, whatever you want, for the fifth time, the song's second wind is suspicious to me, I apologize, but it just is.

Stop being sensitive, if you want a debate then handle all sides of the argument instead of playing woe is me. You never said you ran a school radio station or had weekly survey's so excuse me if it seemed odd that you were asking students about how they felt about Suit & Tie.

Anyone that's been a DJ in college and on the Exec board would know. No matter what "format" your SHOW has (because college radio stations don't have a format), nobody is going to be playing or surveying top 10 mainstream songs.

This song has been a huge success in my opinion. If it was a dance-pop song he lead with, then yes, this would be disappointing, but this being a strongly R&B-influenced song, he's done absolutely incredible.
More importantly, he's proven that pop and urban radio can still share hits. Record companies will definitely be taking note of this. I'm sure that people like Beyonce, Eminem and Nicki Minaj will be aiming for crossover hits like this with their next albums. Whether they succeed or not, is another matter.

The bottom line is that for the rest of the USA, this record is clearly connecting with people and they like it enough for other radio stations with more scientific & proven methods of tracking a song's popularity to make it a Top 10 record at pop radio with a +1200 bullet and Top 5 in HOT 100 Airplay and Top 10 in Digital sales weeks after the initial hype has had more than enough time to wear off.

I still love the song. :) I know some younger people aren't liking the song because they are accustomed to the usual stuff on radio and don't care for R&B/Hip Hop at all so it just may not be for them. I talked to some younger people who felt Justin seemed "too old", obviously he is not 18-20, but he it's not like he is 50 either. Some of my DJ friends have had a good response to the original version and some of the remixes while others had their floors cleared with the clubbers running away as if they had a train to catch. If certain people just don't like it for whatever reason, we have to agree to disagree about that. This whole argument about "99% of the public hates it" cannot be completely accurate. There are enough people who do dislike it, but there are also enough who do like it. Clearly at least 1 million people went and bought it. If radio is being manipulated into playing it and people are really not into it, it would be really interesting to see what the first week sales of the album will be next week, and how it does beyond that, and also is the drop for this song on radio slow or it falls off a cliff. With the album, Justin got a great promo opportunity doing SNL and he is supposed to be doing some promo this week too, if people genuinely dislike it as much as some claim here, it may not have quite a large opening. HITS is predicting around 500k for the first week. It could be greater than that, but I think a more appropriate estimation would be somewhere between 300k and 500k. And if it's really not connecting at all, it would be far beyond that. People aren't going to buy something just because he is on TV if they don't like it either. He has a quite a large fanbase but if they just don't like it, they won't be buying it.

Obviously people like this now. It just took a second. When I initally heard this I was expecting something more hard hitting like "Sexyback or Like I Love You". Once I got over that it was noting like those songs I started to get into it.

He has a quite a large fanbase but if they just don't like it, they won't be buying it. People buy the album even when they don't necessarily like the first single but like the artist. Plus there may be other tracks people are purchasing the album for. Album sales are not a better indicator than the information we already have as to whether or not people like the single in this case. There are far and away too many other variables thrown in that may be at work for album sales to be an accurate measure of a single's popularity. The fact that this song went from losing spins to a +1200 and has been a consistently strong seller speaks volumes.

But you know what, that's how I feel, yet I have people talking about my "attitude" and whatnot.
Oh, wait, that was you.
It's just a debate over a stupid song. No one's being personally attacked, and if this gets you pissy enough to start doing it, then go outside and take a breath. Take your own advice and "stop being sensitive" -- it's a debate.
Except we're literally NOT. Anytime anyone suggests anything negative about the song, or about his comeback, or about any blips in the rise of this song, they get piled on.
It's the people STANNING for this song that have a chip on their shoulder. (Not all of them, obviously.) This is a polarizing song. People are allowed to point out that it hasn't had a fairytale rise.
