www.billboard.com/articles/news/1537980/justin-bieber-scores-fifth-no-1-album-on-billboard-200-chartJustin Bieber Scores Fifth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 05, 2013 As expected, Justin Bieber achieves his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as "Believe Acoustic" debuts atop the list with 211,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. With the arrival, he becomes the only artist to have notched five No. 1 albums before turning 19 years old (he turns 19 on March 1.) He was previously tied with Miley Cyrus, who had also claimed four leaders before 19. Bieber's new album also gives him a No. 1 album in four consecutive years -- something only nine earlier acts have done in the nearly 57-year history of the Billboard 200 chart. "Believe Acoustic" performed strongly with digital retailers, as 75% of its sales were generated by downloads. That robust digital share was expected, thanks in part to strong pre-orders via iTunes. Industry sources suggest that iTunes' pre-orders equated to around 20-25% of the album's overall first-week. The album became available to pre-order over a month before its release -- on Dec. 21, 2012 -- likely benefitting from download gift card redemptions after Christmas. "Believe Acoustic" features eight acoustic and/or live tracks originally found on his "Believe" studio album, released last year. "Acoustic" also includes three new recordings: "Yellow Raincoat," "I Would" and "Nothing Like Us." Bieber previously collected No. 1 albums with "My World 2.0" (2010), "Never Say Never: The Remixes" (2011), "Under the Mistletoe" (2011) and "Believe" (2012). Bieber leads a debut-filled top four on the Billboard 200 this week, as Andrea Bocelli, Tegan and Sara, and Charlie Wilson also arrive at Nos. 2-4, respectively. Bocelli collects his seventh top 10 set with "Passione," shifting 94,000 copies at No. 2. He's yet to earn a No. 1 album, though he's now earned a pair of No. 2 sets. His earlier runner-up title was 2009's "My Christmas," which spent five consecutive weeks stuck at No. 2. The new Bocelli album is also available in Spanish, titled "Pasion," and charts separately. It debuts at No. 59 with 7,000 sold and also bows atop the Latin Albums chart. On the latter tally, it is Bocelli's second No. 1, following 2009's "Mi Navidad," which was the Spanish version of "My Christmas." Alternative pop/rock duo Tegan and Sara charge in at No. 3 with its new album, "Heartthrob," moving a career-high 49,000 copies. That's almost two times their previous best sales week, when "Sainthood" bowed at No. 21 in 2009 with 24,000. "Heartthrob" also starts at No. 1 on the Rock Albums chart, where the duo has collected two previous top 10s with 2007's "The Con" and 2009's "Sainthood." "Heartthrob" saw 71% of its debut-week sales come from downloads and it also debuts at No. 2 on the Digital Albums chart. Bieber's "Believe Acoustic" opens atop the list. Rounding out the four debuts in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 this week is R&B veteran Charlie Wilson, who enters at No. 4 with "Love, Charlie" (44,000). It concurrently starts at No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This marks the third solo top 10 set on the Billboard 200 for the former Gap Band frontman, who previously claimed top 10s with "Charlie, Last Name Wilson" (No. 10, 2005) and "Uncle Charlie" (No. 2, 2009). His latest album is his fourth consecutive release to include his first name in the title. His last, "Just Charlie," was released in 2010 and debuted and peaked at No. 19. While downloads made up a significant portion of the debuts for Tegan and Sara, and Justin Bieber, they comprise quite little of Wilson and Bocelli's top 10 arrivals. Digital sales represented just 17% and 10% of Wilson and Bocelli's first-week sales, respectively. The digital-to-physical imbalance isn't surprising, as both artists' core audiences are generally older, and likely prefer CDs over downloads. As for the rest of the top 10: The "Pitch Perfect" soundtrack falls 3-5 (37,000; down 16%), Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" climbs 8-6 (just under 37,000; up 2%) and Mumford & Sons' "Babel" dips 6-7 (36,000; down 6%). Last week's No. 1, Gary Allan's "Set You Free," tumbles to No. 8 with 34,000 (down 68%) while the Lumineers slide 2-9 with its self-titled album (32,000; down 34%). Taylor Swift's "Red" closes out the top 10, moving down one notch to No. 10 (29,000; down 15%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) stays steady at No. 1 for a fourth week, selling 381,000 downloads (up 7%). In a distant second place is will.i.am & Britney Spears' "Scream & Shout," rising two rungs to No. 2 with 170,000 (up less than 1%). Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" falls 2-3 (162,000; down 14%), Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child" (featuring John Martin) rises 6-4 (122,000; down 8%) and the Lumineers' "Ho Hey" is a non-mover at No. 5 (118,000; down 16%). Lil Wayne's "Love Me" (featuring Drake & Future) slips 3-6 (109,000; down 36%) and Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" vaults 28-7 (105,000; up 87%). The latter's jump comes as it also rises 30-23 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (known as Mainstream Top 40 on billboard.biz). Right behind Mars on the Digital Songs chart is . . . Mars again, with "Locked Out of Heaven." It moves down one slot to No. 8 with 105,000 (down 17%). Justin Bieber's "Beauty and a Beat" climbs 12-9 (104,000; up 18%) and Maroon 5's "Daylight" descends 9-10 (95,000; down 8%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Feb. 3) totaled 5.24 million units, up 7% compared with the sum last week (4.92 million) and down 10% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.81 million). Year to date album sales stand at 26.49 million, down 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (27.16 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.80 million downloads, down 3% compared with last week (26.67 million) and down 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (26.39 million). Year to date track sales are at 143.65 million, up 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (141.58 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Adele's "21" was for a 20th week (237,000; up 95%) while Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" started in the No. 2 slot with 187,000.

Albums: Bieber Sets Teen Record By Paul Grein Justin Bieber this week becomes the first artist in chart history to land five #1 albums or EPs while still in his teens. The 18-year old achieves the feat as Believe Acoustic enters The Billboard 200 at #1. The album follows My World 2.0, the EP Never Say Never: The Remixes, Under The Mistletoe and Believe. Miley Cyrus landed four #1 albums while still in her teens (counting Hannah Montana albums). She scored with Hannah Montana, Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus, Breakout and the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack, all by age 16. In third place is Britney Spears, who landed three #1 albums while still in her teens. She scored with …Baby One More Time, Oops!...I Did It Again and Britney, all by age 19. In addition, Bieber becomes the first Canadian artist in chart history to land five #1 albums. He surpasses Neil Young, who has had four. Young scored with the 1972 classic Harvest and also with three albums with Crosby, Stills Nash & Young: Déjà vu, 4 Way Street and So Far. Michael Buble is in third place among Canadian acts for the most #1 albums. The charismatic crooner has had three: Call Me Irresponsible, Crazy Love and Christmas. Bieber is the 36th artist to amass five or more #1 albums since the chart became a regular weekly feature in Billboard in March 1956. That’s pretty good for an artist who was unknown just four years ago. Billboard’s Keith Caulfield adds an interesting nugget. Bieber is only the 10th artist in the history of The Billboard 200 to land a #1 album in four consecutive calendar years. Believe Acoustic sold 211K copies in its first week. This is the heftiest tally for an album released in the month of January since Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now sold 481K copies in the week ending Jan. 31, 2010. The tally for Believe Acoustic includes 158K digital copies, which it puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. That’s the biggest one-week digital tally in history for a teen act. Bieber broke his own record: Believe sold 139K digital copies in its first week. (Taylor Swift’s Fearless is in third place. It sold 129K digital copies in its debut week.) This is Bieber’s seventh top 10 album. Bieber, who will turn 19 on March 1, is one of the youngest performers to amass so many top 10 albums at such a young age. But he’s not the youngest. Cyrus amassed nine top 10 albums (again, counting Hannah Montana albums) before her 18th birthday in November 2010. Believe Acoustic is Bieber’s second Acoustic album. Bieber followed his My World EP and My World 2.0 album with My Worlds Acoustic. The impetus for these albums is to prove that Bieber has vocal chops. Some of his teen-idol predecessors needed tons of studio gloss to appear minimally competent. Andrea Bocelli’s Passione debuts at #2, just in time for Valentine’s Day. This ties My Christmas as Bocelli’s highest-charting album to date. That album logged five weeks at #2 in 2009. Passione is Bocelli’s fifth top five album. The album features collabos with Nelly Furtado and Jennifer Lopez and a “virtual duet” with Edith Piaf on Piaf’s 1950 classic, “La Vie En Rose.” A Spanish-language edition of the album, Pasion, debuts at #59, with sales of 7K. (I’m glad that charting the two editions separately didn’t affect its chart ranking.) These are the seventh top 10 albums for both Bieber and Bocelli. The two artists have something else in common. Both were nominated for Grammys as Best New Artist. Both lost. Bocelli lost to Lauryn Hill as Best New Artist of 1998. Bieber lost to Esperanza Spalding as Best New Artist of 2010. Tegan and Sara’s Heartthrob debuts at #3. This is the first top 10 album for the Canadian pop/rock duo, which is comprised of identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin. Their previous highest-charting album was their previous release, Sainthood, which hit #21 in 2009. (And what are the odds that an album titled Heartthrob would debut the same week that an actual heartthrob does?) Charlie Wilson’s Love, Charlie debuts at #4. It’s his third top 10 album, following Charlie Last Name: Wilson (#10 in 2005) and Uncle Charlie (#2 in 2009). The album features a collabo with Keith Sweat. Wilson rose to fame with The Gap Band. That trio’s highest-charting album was Gap Band IV, which reached #14 in 1982. Love, Charlie is the highest-charting album to date with this title concept. Shelby Lynne’s Love, Shelby hit #109 in 2001. Smokey Robinson’s Love, Smokey hit #112 in 1990. Elvis Presley’s compilation Love, Elvis hit #120 in 2005. Luther Vandross’ four-disk box set Love, Luther hit #191 in 2007. Pitch Perfect drops from #3 to #5. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the third week in a row. Pitch Perfect has sold particularly well as a digital album. The album has sold 365K digital copies, a total topped by only two soundtracks in digital history: Twilight (721K digital copies) and Juno (379K). Slipping to fourth place: Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy (346K). Gary Allan’s Set You Free drops from #1 to #8 in its second week. It’s #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week. It’s Allan’s first album to spend two weeks on top of the country chart. 2005’s Tough All Over and 2007’s Greatest Hits each had one week at #1. “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the fourth week. It sold 381K copies, its best showing to date. “Thrift Shop” is shaping up as a Gotye-style monster hit. It’s a lock to hold at #1 on the Hot 100 for the third straight week, as you will see later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Justin Bieber’s Believe Acoustic debuts at #1 (211K). It’s his fifth #1 album; his seventh to make the top 10…Andrea Bocelli’s Passione debuts at #2 (94K). It’s his seventh top 10 album…Tegan and Sara’s Heartthrob debuts at #3 (49K). It’s the duo’s first top 10 album…Charlie Wilson’s Love, Charlie debuts at #4 (44K). It’s his third top 10 album… The Pitch Perfect soundtrack drops from #3 to #5 in its 15th chart week (37K). This is its sixth week in the top 10. The Second Five: Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox rebounds from #8 to #6 in its eighth week (37K). It has ranked in the top 10 the entire time…Mumford & Sons’ Babel dips from #6 to #7 in its 19th week (36K). This is its 13th week in the top 10… Gary Allan’s Set You Free drops from #1 to #8 in its second week (34K)…The Lumineers’ The Lumineers drops from #2 to #9 in its 44th week (32K). This is its sixth week in the top 10… Taylor Swift’s Red dips from #9 to #10 in its 14th week (29K). It has ranked in the top 10 the entire time. Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. 2013 Grammy Nominees drops from #4 to #14. (Expect a turnaround.) Kidz Bop Kids’ Kidz Bop 23 drops from #5 to #11. A$AP Rocky’s Long.Live.A$AP drops from #7 to #13. The Les Miserables soundtrack drops from #10 to #17. Local Natives’ Hummingbird debuts at #12. This is the highest-charting album to date for the indie rock band from the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Their Gorilla Manor hit #160 in 2010. Colton Dixon’s “faith-based album” A Messenger debuts at #15. Dixon finished seventh on Season 11 of American Idol. He’s the second Season 11 finalist to score with a debut album. Phillip Phillips’ World From The Side Of The Moon peaked at #4…Hatebreed’s Divinity Of Purpose debuts at #20. It’s the metal band’s highest-charting album to date…Get Up! by Ben Harper with bluesman Charlie Musselwhite debuts at #27. Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 blockbuster Rumours re-enters the chart at #40. The album logged 31 weeks at #1. Since 1956, only two albums have had longer runs on top: the West Side Story soundtrack (54 weeks) and Michael Jackson’s Thriller (37 weeks). Rumours is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the second week. It first topped the catalog chart in May 2011. Destiny’s Child’s Love Songs debuts at #72. Beyonce’s 4 re-enters the chart at #100. Both should move up next week, the first full week following B’s performance at the Super Bowl. Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials tops the 500K mark in digital sales. That represents 59% of the album’s total sales (849K). The band’s 2009 album Lungs has sold 591K digital copies. That represents 52% of that album’s total sales to date (1,142,000). Adele’s Live At Royal Albert Hall returns to #1 on Top Music Videos. This is its 26th week on top. This extends its record for the longest-running #1 music video by a female artist. Note: One Direction’s Up All Night—The Live Tour was #1 last week for the 30th week, not Adele’s DVD, as I reported. There was a chart rerun after the initial results were posted. (I just updated last week’s column.) Coming Attractions: Josh Groban’s All That Echoes is expected to be among next week’s top new entries. Also due: Now 45, Tim McGraw’s Two Lanes Of Freedom, Red’s Release The Panic, Coheed & Cambria’s The Afterman Descension, Avant’s Face The Music, Joe Budden’s No Love Lost, Robert DeLong’s Just Movement and Mumford & Sons’ DVD, The Road To Red Rocks.

I don't know what happened to digital single sales. Ever since October or so, we've seen a decline in sales and people said it was due to people waiting for their gift cards. It's been a month and sales are still low, other than Thrift Shop. Does anyone know why? What comes to mind is sales of let's say I Knew You Were Trouble. It got to 300k+ for a couple of weeks and quickly declined. This level of sales reminds me of earlier years.

For another, sales did rise after the holidays. I'd argue that people just aren't excited by a lot of music right now.

Celine Dion is Canadian and has 4 #1 albums, but Grein didn't mention her, oddly.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/1538575/chart-moves-local-natives-best-week-ever-fleetwood-macs-rumours-returnsThis week, Justin Bieber became the first artist to earn five No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart before turning 19. His new "Believe Acoustic" debuted atop the list, selling 211,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was one of four debuts in the top 10 -- and all of them arrived in the top four. As for the rest of the chart, there were of course -- as always -- some movers and shakers. Let's take a closer look at some of them: -- Local Natives: It's a big week for the Los Angeles band. The act's "Hummingbird" album gives the group its best sales week yet (26,000) and a new chart high on the Billboard 200 as it bows at No. 12. The effort follows the slow-and-steady success of its 2010 "Gorilla Manor" debut, which peaked at No. 106 and has sold 120,000. -- Colton Dixon: The former "American Idol" contestant bows at No. 15 with "A Messenger" and also starts at No. 1 on Christian Albums, selling 22,000. He's the third "Idol" finalist to reach the top of the Christian tally, following Clay Aiken and Mandisa. -- Carrie Underwood: A $7.99 sale price on her "Blown Away" album at iTunes lifts its download sales by 84% while its overall climb is 32%. In turns, it jumps 37-34 on the chart with the Greatest Gainer award. In the set's 40 weeks on the chart, it has yet to sell less than 10,000 in a week. This week, its total sales rise to 1.26 million. -- Fleetwood Mac: The band's classic "Rumours" album earned a 35th anniversary reissue last week -- in various expansive configurations -- prompting its reentry at No. 40 with 11,000 sold (up 527%). The album spent 31 weeks at No. 1 in 1977 and 1978 -- tied with the "South Pacific" soundtrack and Harry Belafonte's "Calypso" for the third-longest run at No. 1 in history. Only the soundtrack to "West Side Story" (54 weeks) and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (37) logged more weeks at No. 1. -- Wow Gospel Series: The Wow Gospel series returns with "Wow Gospel 2013," debuting at No. 43 with 10,000. The Wow Gospel series has charted at least one title on the list each year since its first release, "Wow Gospel 1998" (which peaked at No. 100). The new "Wow Gospel 2013" album also starts at No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart, where its the 20th No. 1 for the franchise. To date, the Wow Gospel albums have sold 5.8 million. -- Flux Pavilion: The 24-year old DJ/producer's (Joshua Steele) album "Blow the Roof" arrives at No. 58 on the Billboard 200, giving the Big Beat label its fifth top 100 album since relaunching in 2010. Over on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, it debuts at No. 1 -- the second-ever leader on the tally for Big Beat (following Skrillex's "Bangarang" EP last year). -- Emeli Sande: A pair of TV performances last week on NBC's "Today" (Jan. 29) and CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman" (Feb. 1) help push her album "Our Version of Events" to its best sales (5,000; up 105%) week since last June. It makes a massive jump from No. 199 to No. 86 this week.

Nothing against Cartman2002 (although I have no idea what his personal certification criteria is) but those posts belong in the Personal Charts forum. They're too easily confused with the genuine certification data in these threads.
