www.billboard.com/articles/news/1549352/mumford-sons-make-grammy-fueled-return-to-no-1-on-billboard-200Mumford & Sons Make Grammy-Fueled Return to No. 1 on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 20, 2013 As forecasted a week ago, Mumford & Sons' "Babel" jumps back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the wake of its Grammy Award win for album of the year on Feb. 10. The set -- which rises 4-1 on the tally -- sold 185,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 17, according to Nielsen SoundScan, posting a weekly gain of 242%. The figure is a bit larger than initially projected by label sources. A week ago, "Babel" was looking to maybe sell 150,000 to 170,000 in the week after the Grammy Awards. Sale pricing by the iTunes Store -- for Valentine's Day -- helped push "Babel's" sales even bigger. "Babel" was marked down to $6.99 for a limited time by iTunes and was featured in an email blast sent to its customers. In turn, the album scores a 260% gain in download sales -- moving from 28,000 to 101,000 for the week. (The largest digital week for a non-debuting album since the week after Christmas, when Taylor Swift's "Red" sold 131,000 downloads.) Physical sales for "Babel" last week were still robust, however -- amounting to 55% of "Babel's" sales for the frame. "Babel" is also benefitting from two new deluxe editions of the album that were released on Feb. 5. The first, available exclusively at Target, includes three bonus live tracks. A second version, dubbed the "Gentlemen of the Road" edition, was widely-released and boasts a 12 extra live cuts. On the Grammy Awards, Mumford & Sons performed twice. The quartet sang the album's lead single "I Will Wait," and then later in the broadcast, performed as part of an all-star memorial tribute. This is "Babel's" fourth non-consecutive week atop the Billboard 200. It spent its first three weeks at No. 1 last October. In the top 10, in addition to Mumford at No. 1, all of the titles at Nos. 2-4, 6, 7 and 10 are impacted by the Grammy Awards. The "2013 Grammy Nominees" compilation -- featuring an array of Grammy-nominated songs -- jumps 11-2 with 88,000 (up 136%). It's the highest-charting week ever for the "Grammy Nominees" series, which launched in 1995. It also earns its best sales week since "Grammy Nominees 2007" moved 131,000 the week after the 2007 show. The franchise has logged 12 top 10 sets. Bruno Mars benefits from his performance on the Grammy Awards as well, as his "Unorthodox Jukebox" set rises 8-3 with 86,000 (up 112%). Mars sang the album's No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Locked Out Of Heaven" before segueing into a Bob Marley tribute featuring Sting, Rihanna, Ziggy Marley and Damian Marley. (In turn, Bob Marley & the Wailers' greatest hits album "Legend" flies 99-34 with 20,000 -- up 270%.) Taylor Swift, who opened the Grammys with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," rises 12-4 with "Red" (72,000; up 106%). Swift's set also gains thanks to hefty promotion by Target. The retailer ran a TV commercial during the Grammys, touting its exclusive version of "Red." Additionally, it was featured in Target's weekly circular ad. Of "Red's" sales last week, a whopping 86% were physical albums. Target also smiles on P!nk, as her "The Truth About Love" almost returns to the top 10 -- climbing 23-11 with 47,000 (up 121%). Like "Red," the Target version of P!nk's album was advertised during the Grammys. P!nk was also seen in a second commercial during the show, as she starred in a new spot by Covergirl. Like Swift's "Red," P!nk saw the bulk of "Truth's" sales last week from physical copies of the album (85% physical vs. 15% digital). Three more Grammy Awards performers are found in the Billboard 200's top 10. The Lumineers' self-titled album has its best sales week yet, rising 10-6 with 67,000 (up 70%). fun.'s "Some Nights" climbs 14-7 (66,000; up 118%). Maroon 5's "Overexposed" rises 20-10 (48,000; up 119%). Like Swift and Mars, "Overexposed" was marked-down to $6.99 at iTunes last week. Last week's No. 1 album, Josh Groban's "All That Echoes," slips to No. 5 with 72,000 (down 50%). The "Now 45" compilation slides 3-8 (63,000; down 27%) and Andrea Bocelli's "Passione" falls 5-9 (48,000; down just 6%). Figure the latter's slight decline is owed to gift purchases made for Valentine's Day. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) reigns for a sixth week. It logs its best sales week yet, moving 412,000 downloads (up 6%). In a somewhat distant second place is Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko), which drives 25-2 with 306,000 (up 358%). The song was performed on the Grammy Awards, while its music video also debuting during the tracking week. Baauer's red-hot "Harlem Shake" debuts at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 262,000 (up 1,359% from 18,000). The song -- as featured in countless YouTube viral videos -- was released commercially last June. It didn't start to sell significant units until a week ago, when it moved 18,000 after the "Harlem Shake" meme began to take hold. Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" is steady at No. 4 with 217,000 (up 36%), Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" (featuring Jay-Z) rises 8-5 (201,000; up 67%) and the Lumineers' "Ho Hey" is stationary at No. 6 (192,000; up 30%). The latter two songs were both performed on the Grammy Awards. Drake's new single "Started From the Bottom" flies 32-8 with 168,000 (up 185%) after its first full week of sales. The song debuted last week (ending Feb. 10) after four days of impact, as it was released on Feb. 7. Timberlake's new song "Mirrors" enters the top 10 at No. 9 with 163,000, after it hit iTunes early on Monday morning, Feb. 11. The song -- from his forthcoming "20/20 Experience" album -- was either available as a stand-alone track purchase, or, as an instant-gratification download when a customer pre-ordered the album. (The customer was immediately charged for the track in either instance.) Closing out the top 10 is will.i.am & Britney Spears' "Scream & Shout," which falls 2-10 with 158,000 (down 3%). Owed mostly to buzz generated by the Grammy Awards, the entire top 16 titles on the Digital Songs chart all sell in excess of 100,000. The last time that happened -- not counting the Christmas holiday weeks -- was last April, when Easter helped push the top 16 all to 100,000-plus sales. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Feb. 17) totaled 6.81 million units, up 17% compared with the sum last week (5.81 million) and down 12% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (7.72 million). Year to date album sales stand at 39.12 million, down 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (41.70 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 29.43 million downloads, up 8% compared with last week (32.28 million) and down 9% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (32.23 million). Year to date track sales are at 200.41 million, down 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (202.78 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Adele's "21" was No. 1 -- yet again -- for a 22nd week (297,000; down 59%). The highest debut was fun.'s "Some Nights," starting at No. 3 with 70,000.

Albums: Mumford’s Grammy Surge By Paul Grein | Chart Watch Mumford & Sons’ Babel rebounds from #4 to #1 on The Billboard 200 in the wake of winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. The album spent its first three weeks at #1 in September and October. It dropped as low as #23 before beginning its resurgence, which is due both to the Grammys and to the slow-building success of the band’s great single, “I Will Wait.” Sales for Babel jumped by 242% this week compared to last week. That’s the biggest gain, on a percentage basis, for an album following a Grammy victory as Album of the Year since Raising Sand by Robert Plant/Alison Krauss surged by 715% four years ago. (The Nielsen SoundScan era record was set the year before that when Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters surged by 967% in the week following its surprise win.) Babel is the first album by a British group to log four or more weeks at #1 since the Beatles’ hit-studded compilation 1, which spent eight weeks on top in late 2000 and early 2001. It’s the first studio album by a British group to remain #1 this long since Spice Girls’ Spice spent five weeks on top in 1997. That frothy female quintet has virtually nothing in common with the rootsy Mumford & Sons beyond nationality and success, but that’s the fun of the charts. Babel has sold 1,922,000 copies in just 21 weeks. The group’s previous album, Sigh No More, took 93 weeks to sell that many copies. (For five of those weeks, it wasn’t even listed on the chart.) Sigh No More has been in the top 100 continuously since June 2010. Digital accounts for more than half of Babel’s sales to date. The album tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. Sigh No More has sold 1,542,000 digital copies. Mumford & Sons is the only act with two albums that have sold 1 million or more digital copies. Adele, Eminem and Lady Gaga each have one album that has sold 1 million digital copies. Babel sold 101K digital copies this week, which puts it at #1 on this week’s Top Digital Albums chart. This is the first time an album that has been out this long has sold 100K digital copies in a week since Adele’s 21 sold 176K digital copies in its 52nd week in February 2012 (following her Grammy sweep). Mumford & Sons’ DVD Road To Red Rocks is #1 on Top Music Videos for the second week. Grammy Nominees 2013 rebounds from #11 to #2. That’s the highest ranking to date for a Grammy Nominees album. The 2007 edition reached #3. In addition, six albums in this week’s top 10 are by artists who performed on the Grammys. (That’s even more impressive when you consider that there are only eight albums by artists in this week’s top 10; the other two are Various Artist compilations). Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait” is featured on Grammy Nominees 2013, which means it’s on the top two albums in the country. But I can beat that. Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is featured on three albums in this week’s top 10: her album Red, Grammy Nominees 2013 and Now 45. Red rebounds from #12 to #4. The album is back at #1 on Top Country Albums for the 14th week. That’s the longest run at #1 on the country chart since Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now logged 31 weeks on top in 2010-2011. fun.’s Some Nights winds up a full year on the chart by rebounding from #14 to #7. The trio won two Grammys: Best New Artist and Song of the Year for “We Are Young.” The album has never slipped out of the top 50. Can it spend a second entire year on the chart? How about inside the top 50? Stay tuned. “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the sixth straight week. More impressively, its sales jumped for the sixth week in a row (to 412K). It’s the first song in digital history to gain in sales in each of its first six weeks at #1 on Hot Digital Songs. It’s a lock to hold at #1 on the Hot 100 for the fifth straight week, as you will see later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Mumford & Sons’ Babel rebounds from #4 to #1 in its 21st week (185K). This is its 15th week in the top 10…Grammy Nominees 2013 rebounds from #11 to #2 in its fourth week (88K). This is its second week in the top 10… Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox rebounds from #8 to #3 in its 10th week (86K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Taylor Swift’s Red rebounds from #12 to #4 in its 17th week (72K). This is its 16th week in the top 10…Josh Groban’s All That Echoes drops from #1 to #5 in its second week (72K). The Second Five: The Lumineers’ The Lumineers rebounds from #10 to #6 in its 46th week (67K). This is its eighth week in the top 10… fun.’s Some Nights rebounds from #14 to #7 in its 52nd week (66K). This is its seventh week in the top 10… Now 45 drops from #3 to #8 in its second week (63K)… Andrea Bocelli’s Passione drops from #5 to #9 in its third week (48K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Maroon 5’s Overexposed rebounds from #20 to #10 in its 34th week (48K). This is its 11th week in the top 10. Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Tim McGraw’s Two Lanes Of Freedom drops from #2 to #12… Justin Bieber’s Believe Acoustic drops from #6 to #18…Red’s Release The Panic dives from #7 to #51…Coheed & Cambria’s The Afterman: Descension plummets from #9 to #77. (I think this is what they mean by “Descension.”) Bullet For My Valentine’s Temper Temper debuts at #13. It’s the band’s third top 15 album, though it’s down from the top five status of Scream Aim Fire (#4 in February 2008) and Fever (#3 in May 2010). The Black Keys’ El Camino rebounds from #29 to #14 in the wake of the duo winning three Grammys, including Best Rock Album. The album debuted and peaked at #2 in December 2011. It has sold 1,192,000 copies. The Pitch Perfect soundtrack drops from #13 to #16 in its 17th chart week. This is the 11th time it has been the week’s highest-charting soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie. Adele’s 21 winds up two full years on the chart by rebounding from #22 to #19 in its 104th week. The album has never ranked below #35. The album has sold 10,396,000 copies, which makes it the best-selling album of the last 10 years. (The last album, by release date, to sell more copies is Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me, which has sold 10,910,000 copies since its release in February 2002.) 21 is the fifth best-selling album released since January 2000. It trails the Beatles’ 1 (12,159,000), *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (11,140,000), the aforementioned Come Away With Me (10,910,000) and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP (10,675,000). Bob Marley & the Wailers’ 1984 compilation Legend zooms from #158 to #34 in its 255th chart week. The album is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 114th week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. The upsurge is largely due to the reggae-themed segment on the Grammys which included Sting, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and Marley’s sons Damian and Ziggy. Jeremy Camp’s Reckless debuts at #31. It’s the Contemporary Christian star’s fourth album to reach the top 40. The Bombshell: The New Musical From Smash soundtrack debuts at #43. The Music Of Smash reached #9 in May. Marilyn Monroe, the focal point of Smash, starred in the 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The soundtrack (which included her classic rendition of “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”) reached #5. Of Monsters And Men’s My Head Is An Animal drops from #50 to #57 this week. The album tops the 500K mark in digital sales, which is impressive considering its total sales are just 673K. (The album’s digital percentage is 75%.) Foals’ Holy Fire debuts at #86. The album enters The Official U.K. Album chart at #2, just behind the Les Miserables soundtrack, which is #1 for the fourth time in the past five weeks. Pearl Jam’s 1991 album Ten tops the 10 million mark in U.S. sales this week. It’s the 22nd album to sell 10 million or more copies since 1991. Celine Dion’s 1999 compilation All The Way…A Decade In Song tops the 8 million mark. It’s the best-selling greatest hits album by a female solo artist in the Nielsen SoundScan era. (Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection is in second place. It has sold 5,845,000 copies since 1991. But that album was released in November 1990, so its tally is incomplete.) Two of Dion’s albums have sold even better. Falling Into You is up to 10,812,000. Let’s Talk About Love is up to 9,601,000. Stone Temple Pilots’ 1992 album Core tops the 5 million mark. A Good Day To Die Hard was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Coming Attractions: Buckcherry’s Confessions is expected to be next week’s top new entry. Also due: Atlas Genius’ When It Was Now, Celtic Thunder’s Mythology and Trinidad James’ Don’t Be S.A.F.E.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/1549354/pearl-jams-ten-album-hits-10-million-in-us-salesPearl Jam's 'Ten' Album Hits 10 Million in U.S. Sales Landmark album is the 22nd full-length to reach 10 million sales in the SoundScan era. Pearl Jam's landmark debut album "Ten" becomes the latest addition to the 10 million-sellers club in the U.S. This week, the 1991 Epic Records release surpasses the 10 million U.S. sales mark according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it the 22nd album to reach the threshold since the company began tracking data in 1991. In the week ending Feb. 17, the album sold nearly 4,000 copies (up 159% over the previous week). That brings its total sales to about 1,000 over 10 million. It is the fourth album to hit 10 million U.S. sales since the start of 2012. In that span of time, "Ten" follows Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory," Usher's "Confessions" and Adele's blockbuster "21." "21" now stands as the No. 15 best-selling album of the SoundScan era, with 10.4 million sold. It is currently about 186,000 copies behind Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," which is in 14th place. It should be a while before another album crosses the 10 million mark. While we had a quick succession of albums hit 10 million in the last year, the next-closest album to 10 million is still 400,000 copies away: Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love" (9.6 million). At the present, the album is selling well below 1,000 copies a week. Since 1991, the highest selling album -- according to SoundScan -- is Metallica's self-titled 1991 release, which has moved 15.86 million. Shania Twain's "Come On Over" is in second place with 15.53 million and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" is in third with 14.82 million. In fourth place is Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" (12.21 million), followed by the Beatles' "1" (12.16 million), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (12.06 million), Santana's "Supernatural" (11.73 million), Creed's "Human Clay" (11.64 million) and Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Legend" (11.26 million) at Nos. 5-9. Rounding out SoundScan's top 10 selling albums since 1991 is 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached," with 11.14 million. Artist, Title (Year of Release), Time To 10 Million 1. www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1549798/chart-moves-pitch-perfect-first-soundtrack-to-sell-halfChart Moves: 'Pitch Perfect' First Soundtrack to Sell Half-Million in Nearly a Year NEWS By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 22, 2013 4:51 PM EST It was all about the Grammy Awards this week on the Billboard 200 chart, as album of the year winner Mumford & Sons returned to No. 1 with Babel. The set, released last September, climbed three rungs to No. 1 this week with 185,000 sold (up 242% compared to its previous week's sales). The entire top 10 was basically an all-Grammys affair, with seven of the titles in region profiting from exposure on the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards. As for the rest of the chart, there were of course -- as always -- some movers and shakers. Let's take a closer look at some of them: -- "Pitch Perfect" Soundtrack - With another 37,000 sold (up 15%, down three to No. 16), its total sales rise to 505,000 -- marking the first soundtrack to sell a half-million since The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, which hit the mark in the SoundScan week ending April 1, 2012. -- Alabama Shakes: Coming off a week where the band garnered exposure on the Grammy Awards (where it was nominated for best new artist) and a performance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (Feb. 16), the band's Boys & Girls album has its second-best sales week yet (30,000; up 130%, jumping 43-20). -- Bob Marley and the Wailers: Bob Marley was celebrated in a tribute medley during the Grammy Awards, which helps explain the gain for his mega-selling greatest hits album (rising 99-34). It sold 20,000 last week -- up 269%. It was also sale priced by iTunes for $6.99. -- "Smash" / "Bombshell:" The niche soundtrack to the show-within-a-show on NBC's musical-drama "Smash" debuts with 16,000 at No. 43. The original "Smash" TV soundtrack only sold more than that in its first three weeks of release. -- Led Zeppelin: The LP version of the live Celebration Day album finally reached retail last week, helping to prompt its overall 57% sales increase. It climbs 105-75. On the Vinyl Albums chart, it debuts at No. 1 with a little over 2,000 LPs sold. -- Lynyrd Skynyrd: Its greatest hits album 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection has sold 2.84 million, making it the biggest-seller in the long-running "Masters" series. It's one of nine million-sellers for the compilation brand, which has released hundreds of albums under the "20th Century Masters" banner. -- Rihanna: The diva's latest album, Unapologetic (No. 15 this week on the chart), has sold 720,000 in its first 13 weeks of release. It is selling at a faster rate than her previous album, 2011's "Talk That Talk," which moved 674,000 in its first 13 weeks. -- "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" Soundtrack: The film's Feb. 12 home video release on DVD spurs a 326% sales gain for its soundtrack. With 3,000 sold, it debuts at No. 194 -- five months after its Sept. 18 release. It's also the best sales week yet for the album, which has now sold 29,000 to date.
