HITS:
ALL EYES ON JUSTIN:
The TV blitz setting up next Tuesday’s release of Justin Timberlake’s RCA “comeback” album The 20/20 Experience culminates at 8 p.m. that night with a one-hour special on The CW, the network has announced. The performance-and-interview special will be taped at the El Rey Theatre during the Monday night release party and will include the premiere of J.T.’s latest video.
The show’s title--Target Presents the iHeartRadio Album Release Party With Justin Timberlake—tells you all you need to know about the alliance formed by the label’s Peter Edge and Tom Corson to max out the album’s launch, which first-week estimates now ramped up to a hefty 600k.

Those predicting lower numbers for Timberlake- just because they found "Suit & Tie" was underwhelming- I guess they must be stunned by the projection.
Would be cool for David Bowie to eke out a No. 1, but Bon Jovi probably will get it. The band performs on American Idol Thursday, which, while not the huge deal it may have been in the past, still is a good outlet for sales boosts.

I was rooting for Bowie - it would be nice to score his first #1 album. But, isn't #2 his highest charting position anyway?
I'll be shocked if Justin's album manages to open above his last one. His popularity hasn't waned in six years, that's for sure.

Bowie's top 10 albums:
Diamond Dogs - #5 Young Americans - #9 Station to Station - #3 Let's Dance - #4 David Live - #8 Changesonebowie - #10
He hasn't had a top 10 album since 1983.

I like S&T and I'm a bit flabbergasted, honestly. I really lowballed my guess for his opening week b/c of how long he's been away and how soft sales are now even for many bigger artists. But I'm certainly pleased to be wrong in this case. The great reviews are definitely helping as well as the media blitzing.

This is not Justin's release week.
I want David Bowie to get the top spot. He's been getting a lot more press and great reviews. This BJ album seems to have little or no promotion.

In the UK, Bon Jovi will probably be number two unless they can pull ahead of Bowie over the next few days. I think they might be setting a record for the most consecutive albums to peak in the runner-up spot.
Didn't their last album have a really steep second-week decline on the Billboard 200?

Billboard.com: www.billboard.com/articles/news/1551810/david-bowie-vs-bon-jovi-for-no-1-on-next-weeks-billboard-200David Bowie vs. Bon Jovi for No. 1 on Next Week's Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | March 13, 2013 On next week's Billboard 200 chart, rock legend David Bowie is in the hunt for his first No. 1 album, while veteran group Bon Jovi could nab its fifth chart-topper. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 20. Industry sources suggest Bowie's "The Next Day," released yesterday (March 12), is on course to sell around 90,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 17. The set is his first studio album since 2003's "Reality," and will mark his first top 10 album since 1983's blockbuster "Let's Dance" peaked at No. 4. Perhaps surprisingly, Bowie has never tallied a No. 1 album. Of his 39 charting sets -- stretching back to his "Hunky Dory" debut in 1972 -- his highest-charting album is 1976's "Station to Station," which peaked at No. 3. As for Bon Jovi, the rock band's new "What About Now" album (also released March 12) might sell around 90,000 or so as well this week. If it edges out Bowie, it will be Bon Jovi's fifth No. 1 album -- and third straight studio set to top the tally. The act's two previous studio releases (2009's "The Circle" and 2007's "Lost Highway") both entered at No. 1. Bon Jovi's two earlier No. 1s came with 1986's "Slippery When Wet" and 1988's "New Jersey."

Those predicting lower numbers for Timberlake- just because they found "Suit & Tie" was underwhelming- I guess they must be stunned by the projection. Why would we? I would expect very BIG numbers for anyone with the PR $$$ he has. I've seen his commercial 4-5 times already and now a 1hour primetime show for the album launch. They'll need that 600k in sales to help pay for the album launch.

Do you think it's safe to say that Justin Timberlake's album will scan 2 million copies?

Do you think it's safe to say that Justin Timberlake's album will scan 2 million copies? I recently came across an article which highlighted that, throughout his career, only one album which Timberlake as a lead artist has failed to sell under three million, and that was the *NSYNC Christmas album, which didn't fall short by too much for what it was.

^Yes, but let's get to the 2 million scanned mark before we start discussing 3 million scanned.
I think 1 million scanned in 3 weeks is a given.

We could also wait until after his album release week to discuss scanning 2 million... Meanwhile, did Bon Jovi's song not even crack the iTunes top 100 after the AI performance?

Last night's Idol was the lowest rated regularly-scheduled episode ever, so it's not surprising if their appearance didn't do much for the song.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/1552394/bon-jovi-david-bowie-headed-to-nos-1-and-2-on-billboard-200Bon Jovi, David Bowie Headed to Nos. 1 and 2 on Billboard 200 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | March 16, 2013 Earlier this week we reported that Bon Jovi and David Bowie were vying for the No. 1 slot on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart. However, Bon Jovi has now pulled ahead, and it seems like the band's "What About Now" is a lock for a No. 1 bow on the chart. Industry sources suggest the group's album might sell just under 90,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 17. It will mark the band's fifth No. 1 set -- and third straight studio effort to hit the top. Meanwhile, David Bowie's new "The Next Day" -- his first studio album since 2003 -- should arrive in the No. 2 position with perhaps 80,000. While a No. 1 album will seemingly continue to elude Bowie (who has yet to notch a chart-topper), a No. 2 bow will give him his best ranking ever. Somewhat shockingly, his highest-charting album to date is 1976's "Station to Station," which peaked at No. 3. "The Next Day" will also likely score Bowie his best sales week for an album in the Nielsen SoundScan era (1991-present). He's never sold more than 55,000 in a week for a single album, when 2002's "Heathen" debuted at No. 14. "The Next Day's" numbers are especially impressive, considering Bowie himself has done no press for the set. While he's released two music videos, the artist has not made a single media appearance or given an interview to promote the effort. Elsewhere in next week's top 10, look for debuts from the "Passion: Let the Future Begin" album, Mindless Behavior, Eric Clapton and the "Sound City" soundtrack. The "Passion" album might sell around 40,000 or so, while Clapton, "Sound City" and Mindless Behavior are in the 35,000 range. On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Bowie is No. 1 while Bon Jovie is No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Though Bowie is ahead of Bon Jovi on the Building chart, that does not mean Bowie will necessarily be No. 1 on the official Billboard 200 chart when revealed next Wednesday. As for the rest of the Building chart's top 10: Luke Bryan's current Billboard 200 topper, "Spring Break . . . Here to Party" is in the No. 3 position, while the "Sound City" soundtrack is No. 4. Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" is No. 5, Mindless Behavior's "All Around the World" is No. 6 and Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" is No. 7. Eric Clapton's new "Old Sock" is No. 8, P!nk's "The Truth About Love" is No. 9 and Mumford & Sons' "Babel" is No. 10. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW David Bowie "The Next Day" 2 NEW Bon Jovi "What About Now" 3 1 Luke Bryan "Spring Break . . . Here to Party" 4 NEW Soundtrack "Sound City: Real to Reel" 5 3 Bruno Mars "Unorthodox Jukebox" 6 NEW Mindless Behavior "All Around the World" 7 8 Imagine Dragons "Night Visions" 8 NEW Eric Clapton "Old Sock" 9 12 P!nk "The Truth About Love" 10 4 Mumford & Sons "Babel" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

Dang it- still good numbers for Bowie's album.
I didn't realize there were two "Gone Gone Gone" appearances in the iTunes top 100. While Idol may be at ratings lows, it still has a decent-sized audience, enough to help give the Bon Jovi album the sales edge.

Looking ahead to next few weeks:
Lil Wayne's new album seems to be doing poorly on iTunes per-sales. I wonder if Timberlake can pull off 2 weeks at #1?
