YOUR MID-WEEK UPDATE: Justin Timberlake will hold on to the #1 spot next week as six new albums debut in the Top 10. Blake Shelton's debut, meanwhile, will mark his career-best first week. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
Justin Timberlake (RCA) 300-325k * Lil Wayne (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) 200-210k * Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 180-190k * OneRepublic (Interscope) 55-60k * Depeche Mode (Columbia) 55-60k * Alan Jackson (Capitol Nashville) 45-50k Bruno Mars (Atlantic) 40-45k * The Strokes (RCA) 35-40k P!nk (RCA) 30-35k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 30-35k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) 30-35k Imagine Dragons (Interscope) 28-32k * Sevendust (7Brothers) 28-32k * Thompson Square (Stoney Creek) 28-32k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 27-30k Les Miserables (Republic) 24-27k Now 45 (Capitol) 24-27k
* Debuts
Timberlake's 20/20 Experience is 2013's YTD sales champ and will be the first million-seller of the year (this honor has belonged to a Sony label for three years running). Speaking of RCA, Nipper's red-hot masters currently have four songs (two by JT, one by P!nk and one by Pitbull) and three albums (Timberlake, P!nk and The Strokes) on the iTunes Top 10. What's more, the #5 iTunes single, Rihanna's smash "Stay" (Def Jam/IDJ), was co-written by and features RCA artist Mikky Ekko, whose solo debut is due to roll out later this year. (3/28p)
YOUR ONE-DAYS: Justin Timberlake will easily remain #1 next week; tune in tomorrow for an estimate on his second-week number. Meanwhile, here are this week's key debuts:
Lil Wayne (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) 190-210k Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 155-175k Depeche Mode (Columbia) 55-60k OneRepublic (Interscope) 50-55k Alan Jackson (Capitol Nashville) 45-50k The Strokes (RCA) 35-40k Sevendust (7Brothers) 30-35k Thompson Square (Stoney Creek) 30-35k Dido (RCA) 14-17k Fred Hammond (RCA) 13-16k
As you can see, that's Weezy on the cover of our latest print edition, which features that oddly chemical "new magazine smell" (not to be confused with the "old take-out smell" of which offices are so redolent.) (3/27p)

Those numbers are pretty much expected for Wayne. 300k was only a reliable prediction months ago. His buzz has died down significantly. These numbers are more in line with the first IANAHB anyway.

I read this title as Justin was only doing 190-210k. Ha!

I feel like with how this era has gone so far, 50-55K is a pretty great number for OneRepublic.

Dido flops.
Good numbers for Shelton. He'll get another Gold album.
Lil Wayne's last album went 2xp. He'll be extremely lucky to be certfied Platinum.

Great for JT! He may even do a 3rd week as there's nothing really big coming out on 4/2.

Lol, this is expected for his IANAHB series. It's for sure promoted and less hyped than The Carter series.

The Band Perry will be pretty big. Should easily do 100k+ I wouldn't be surprised to see The Band Perry open with something in the 150-200k range. Decent numbers for Blake but it's still pretty laughable that the industry considers him the top star and showers him with all the awards. Jason Aldean opens with over 400k, the supposedly 'washed-up' Kenny Chesney still hits 200k, Luke Bryan can open with 150k on a Spring Break album with no single (his next studio album may rival Aldean's opening numbers), etc.

^Yeah, I feel like Blake is built up to be a bigger star than he really is. With him being on The Voice, being given Entertainer of the Year awards, he always has a lot of buzz. His last album couldn't even sell a million (isn't it only at like 700-800K?) and this one can barely crack 150K first week. I'd say that's pretty disappointing for his caliber.
& not surprised for Dido. Did anyone even know she had a new album out in the general public?

I wouldn't compare it to his last album. his last album was part of the very successful carter series. the original I am not a human being only sold a million.

I don't know why people are saying Wayne's album is just selling less because its not a Carter release. Its the same misogyny and weed talk as Tha Carter 4 so I don't really see the difference between the subject material. This is the new norm for Wayne and I doubt he'll ever see 200K ever again in his career. His popularity has diminished considerably.

Brand name - Tha Carter series has been a big seller
The last album in I am Not A Human Being series opened at 110K lower than Tha Carter
so this is actually better comparable.
I would not say this is the "new normal" though.
If Tha Carter V were to come out, I would expect to see bigger numbers than this

It opened 110K digitally only. Its physical release came out 2 weeks later and sold 125K. It ended up selling close to a million copies during Holiday 2010. A regular release (both digital and physical) probably would have sold much better, maybe the 300-400K range. Its not necessarily better but I do agree a Carter V would sell more than this, but probably not by much especially if the material stays shitty and uninspired.

Those are still impressive opening numbers in this day in age.
A bit sad for me to see those numbers for Depeche Mode, but their buzz and stock have fallen in the last several years. The thing is they did tour ticket pre-orders too. The album will definitely be off the chart by the time of their U.S. tour.

Your fine, 2m. It's just that alot of people are not realizing that IANAHB is treated as another series, not just a regular album.

I told you in another thread 110 was digital ONLY. He sold around 260,000 for first physical and digital week It doesn't really work like that. That figure (it's 235k and not 260k btw) includes one week of physical sales and two weeks of digital sales. The opening weeks for both volumes are at the very least underwhelming either way.

The IANAHB series is treated like a side project from his fans and the Hip Hop world. It contains different stylings of rap, production, etc. It has a rock track at the end for gawd's sake. People do not look out for this album. The Carter series is what people look out for by Wayne. This is basically treated as a mixtape.

I think only a Lil Wayne fan could tell you what the exact difference is between the Carter series and anything else he does (aside from Rebirth which was obviously a sonic attempt at being different). I'm not a huge Lil Wayne fan so I can't answer that myself, lol, but I think his better lyrics/wordplay (as perceived by fans) are typically on the Carter albums while his other albums are seen mostly as side ventures, or something that is just thrown out there to fill the void. So that probably has something to do with it. Also, Carter III and IV have at least one top ten pop single each, while his other albums do not. So the crossover potential also makes a difference and I expect he'll try to have one crossover song on Tha Carter V.
That said, even though Carter IV opened up really well it got pretty mixed reviews so yeah, if he wants Carter V to open up in the same ballpark as the previous two he's going to have to really bring his A game. Carter V is going to be his last album before his supposed retirement, so there will be that hype behind it, along with added promotion.
I type too much. What BMAC said.

Maybe people heard the opening track to the album and got scared...I'm listening to the album right now and I can't figure out what the hell I'm listening to. I don't really know much about what he's done to get backlash, but it's also apparent that the quality of his music (little as there was to begin with...) has even gotten worse, so...
As for OneRepublic - I have a special connection to that band (Apologize was released just a week before my best friend was recruited to the IDF and he introduced me the song and I fell in love with them) however, with each of their efforts ever since their debut, I wasn't to fond of them... Their debut is a classic and I actually bought it yesterday, a nice way to commemorate their latest release. So I think that prjection is kinda OK...

1.2 million in two weeks, could be 1.3 depending how far over 300k he goes.

Due to Easter sales bump, I think everyone's gonna end up higher than these predictions:
Justin 325k-350k Lil Wayne 210-220k Blake 200k-210k etc
