Rolling Stone supposedly confirmed with Apple that the actual Boys Don't Cry will be released this weekend.

So he put out a visual album with 18 tracks last night. Some confusion as to whether this is a stand-alone piece or if it's some sort of teaser for the "proper" album coming later this weekend. Either way, the visual component is dumb and pointless but the music is great on first listen. I agree with some on the internet that it is not too immediate and formless, especially compared to Channel Orange, but perhaps that's because the proper album is the real follow-up? Regardless, there are some moments of true brilliance on this. I'm excited to replay and enjoy this on its own. We should figure something out soon, if Rolling Stone is to be believed.

Just read about this. I don't even care enough to listen to it once, at this point.

Just read about this. I don't even care enough to listen to it once, at this point. And he made it an Apple exclusive? so I don't even have the option to care lol. I guess I'll hear it in a month or whenever that exclusivity period ends

Just read about this. I don't even care enough to listen to it once, at this point. I just want to hear the Jazmine Sullivan tracks plus I have Spotify and I don't want to exert the energy and keyboard strokes it takes to get an Apple Exclusive album.

I let my Apple Exclusive trial lapse. It was actually pretty cool, but mostly for the fact that I was able to access my iTunes library remotely...but even that had glitches (like, I was DJing a party and all of a sudden, the Drake-less version of Versace came on... ) so idk. Then, I figured I might renew to hear the Britney album when I thought that would be an exclusive but it looks like it won't be and I'll have the CD in my mailbox waiting for me when I come back from Nashville anyway. Sorry not sorry Frank!

It sounds like a very overdrawn intro.

I haven't seen on heard anything from the "visual" album. I don't dislike Nikes, but I could have done without the Camille/Crazy Frog vocals.

I remember being so surprised at the internet's buildup for his second album since he had only had that one album and a mixtape before, and I guess I didn't realize that either had made that much of a splash. (I listened to both; they were fine.)
But this second album rollout is a damn mess.

This album is very odd, for me. Not that I expected him to release some formulaic, three minute radio records, but he gave absolutely no fucks about song structure. It's just feels like....a bunch of sporadic singing and mumbling on every track. It takes a while to digest most of his music, so I'll give it a few more spins. But if Channel Orange didn't hold up for me, like I thought it would, then this album definitely won't.

It's a hit and miss and pretty slow in general.. Hard to say anything comprehensive yet
Feels like he rushed the release a bit

There are some moments that really stick and that pack an emotional punch on the album. But the way it's presented, ugh. Call me old fashioned, hell, call me old... whatever, but song structure exists for a reason. Things like discipline, direction, form, editing and focus in art aren't new concepts. You can play within and around the structure, not saying all songs need to be verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus, but come on, you have to have some kind of foundation. This is clearly a very personal album for him. I could hear that on first listen. But it's so insular it's almost a vanity project. Everything to him and nothing to me. I have really no desire to ever listen to it again, outside of letting it play in the background (it is pretty, I'll give it that much). But I doubt that's the goal he was aiming for, I genuinely think he was going for some form of dynamism.
I'll never forget Rolling Stone's review of Natalie Merchant's debut album... "Does she think that too much instrumentation – too much music – will steal the focus away from the Very Important things she has to say?" That's exactly how I feel about this album. It's almost like he felt making actual digestible music with form would rob it of any real catharsis, so he just made a shapeless slog of a background record.

I just mention to a friend that I felt that he was taken himself too serious as an artist with this one. I miss his "demo" days because he had such a care free vibe about him. The songs had structure while still not being too generic as a finish product. Now I'm getting bored with his offerings because the focus feels so much on being different than providing just great music. It does not need to be catchy, but give me at least a great melody to vibe too.
