I hope radio gets behind this. He's got an outstanding voice. He's got a lot of A-list support already too, although a lot of them are the Green Room clients too. But still, great voice, great song. I wonder what the studio version sounds like. I'm sure they added something besides the acoustic.
Hopefully radio gets behind this and he can release an album full of songs so I can listen to his voice a long time.

One of, if not the best, male vocalist of this generation. Chris's level of talent is unbelievable. Can't wait to hear this on my radio.

It's not dissimilar from stuff like Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" album. Similar rootsy soul.

You can hear the song on The Green Room website (it'll start to play automatically). And...holy moses. This song is phenomenal. His voice, the production...this song needs to be a huge hit. I really think it could be a big #1 hit.

Love this and so impressed by his vocals. I agree he and Kacey's sounds are what country music needs right now.

Just took a listen. Wow! He's fantastic. I saw him once with the Steeldrivers and was impressed then but this is a very catchy tune. I definitely see the Amos Lee similarity. I hope this can be a hit.

He's great but with the condition of radio I still don't see this getting further than top 15. The 'In Color's sadly fall behind the 'Boys Round Here's in airplay in this world.

There doesn't seem to be room for Jerrod Niemann at country radio, or Jamey Johnson. So there won't be for Chris either, although maybe he'll have one or two top 5 hits. Great song, though.

Well, the difference between Stapleton and Jamey Johnson is Stapleton's a singer/songwriter with songs closer to "Mainstream." As for Jerrod, his problem was more the concept album "Free The Music" than Jerrod himself. Anyone else hear "Please Remember Me"'s similar melody in this?

There doesn't seem to be room for Jerrod Niemann at country radio, or Jamey Johnson. So there won't be for Chris either, although maybe he'll have one or two top 5 hits. Great song, though. I can see the comparisons, but I think Chris has enough hype to make a big splash, and at least make some waves for a little while. Like rsmatto said, Jamey Johnson's music was never tailored for radio, and while I don't think Chris' music is exactly right there with the stuff that Shelton and Aldean (among others) are releasing, I do think it's better-suited for radio than anything Jamey Johnson put out, aside from "In Color". As for Jerrod Niemann, I think he and Arista Nashville waited too long after "One More Drinkin' Song" to put out "Shinin' On Me". I personally loved SOM and thought it would do better but when it didn't, he didn't have the type of radio-ready album to fall back on either. Jerrod's first album was basically discovered by Brad Paisley and Arista released it the way it was and the rest was history--big hits with "Lover, Lover" and "What Do You Want". But 99% of the time it's the other way around...label signs artist, artist works hard to make an album, but the label has to approve. Now, it seems like Arista sort of gave Jerrod free reigns and let him make take another creative risk with his 2nd album but it backfired. Some artists can sell a lot of albums without the support of country radio but Jerrod's not one of them. He wasn't a 'big' enough name yet. But maybe he can come back with another album in the not-so-distant future, one that's more toward the middle-of-the-road, since I can't see Arista continuing to release singles from Free The Music. Chris Stapleton just had a pretty hyped-up radio tour, though, and has a lot of support from other artists including Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley. Since he's a newcomer, he'll be moving up the chart slowly, but I actually do think this song could turn out to be a big hit.

Also working for Chris is that though he leans more traditional, bluesy, soulful and non-mainstream as a singer, he is so highly respected as a songwriter (in addition to THAT VOICE). He has 170+ cuts, many of them from mainstream country artists. So the content of most of his songs shouldn't be turning off any mainstream country fans. I hope and pray that Chris takes off, because he is such a sweet, talented, and deserving person.

I'm listening to this right now on a brand new and fantastic sounding country station Q100.3 (WCYQ/Knoxville) and it's scintillating and then some.
My goodness---this is a wonderful song, and what a voice, as well as impeccable protection. This is an astonishing debut, no doubt about it.
I really want this to become a smash.

I didn't mean to overstate the similarities between Stapleton and the others I wrote about. I was just making a cynical comment that intelligent songwriting and good solid singing are no assurances of success these days -- in fact, they may cut against success. However, I do see the differences and I do hope you're right to be optimistic about Stapleton.

This song is a little puzzling to me. Chris is one of the gems of the Nashville singer/songwriter community - he's a fantastic writer - singer - performer. So after all the buzz - this is a very disappointing song for a first single. His vocal is amazing as well as the production - but it's a boring song. I can't see radio playing this.

Funny thing...I feel the opposite way. I know he is better than a majority of Nashville's songwriters, but I think he is far overrated as a writer. I probably have only listened to about 1/4 of the songs he has let other artists record (Wikipedia claims over 150, so I'd say about 40), but among what I have heard, I would struggle to find 5 songs better than this. It's one of the most elite songs out there currently, and there is a good deal of hype behind his voice that I really think radio is going to play this. The chorus is pretty killer especially compared to just about every other song out right now.
I'm sure there are several others, but these are some of the few Stapleton co-writes from the last few years that I can even consider comparable to this song: (Again, I admittedly may have missed a couple based on never hearing it or not knowing he was a writer.)
"Stop Cheatin' on Me" (Kellie Pickler), "Green Eyes Red Sunglasses" (JT Hodges), "Whiskey and You" (Tim McGraw). I think I'd still probably rank this ahead of all of those though I need some time to let this one burn still.
(I would be open to discussing this if you think you can find songs that are better than this because I may just not know they exist, but you seem to feel that the quality of this is completely lacking and unfortunately, I suspect you will find nearly all of his previous co-writes superior.)

These may not be better than "What Are You Listening To" but I like them a lot and it could help the discussion.
Alan Jackson - "Gonna Come Back As A Country Song" Alan Jackson - "Talk Is Cheap" Alison Krauss & Union Station - "Miles To Go" Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert - "Draggin' The River" Blake Shelton - "Sunny In Seattle" Bradley Gaskin or Dierks Bentley - "Diamonds Make Babies" Darryl Worley - "Things I'll Never Do Again" Gary Allan - "Drinkin' Dark Whiskey" George Strait - "Love's Gonna Make It Alright" Gretchen Wilson - "Love On The Line" Josh Turner & Trisha Yearwood - "Another Try" JT Hodges - "Sleepy Little Town" Julie Roberts - "Pot Of Gold" Julie Roberts Or Little Big Town - "Rain On A Tin Roof" Lee Ann Womack - "Either Way" Lee Ann Womack - "There's More Where That Came From" Patty Loveless - "Higher Than The Wall" Trace Adkins - "Love Will" Trisha Yearwood - "We Tried" Vince Gill - "All Nighter Comin'"
Out of the songs I know he co-wrote there's only one real clunker. Trace Adkins - "Swing"

I think this will be a darkhorse contender on the radio for the remainder of the year, perhaps even into 2014. Or at least, that's what I'm hoping will happen. Sure, it's not all that "radio-friendly" and it doesn't talk about drinking with the tailgate down or a hot chick with her toes on the dashboard, but there are rare cases in which a song with a bit of a deeper meaning can break through. And I have faith that radio will hear this song for what it really is, and that people will hear the raw emotion in his voice, and therefore, I think it will slowly catch on and be one of those slow-burning, slow-climbing hits. He has written some really good songs, although I admit I'm not familiar with the majority of them (mostly the album tracks from albums I don't own, obviously). Still, I think I like "What Are You Listening To" the most and I'm so glad that they're taking a bit more of a gamble by releasing this, rather than lumping Chris in there with tons of other new artists and having his first single be some generic 'radio-friendly' song instead. But out of those songs that Spacey_Kacey and Kanenrá:ke listed, I really like the 2 JT Hodges tunes (Sleepy Little Town & Green Eyes Red Sunglasses) and the Alan Jackson songs are excellent as well. I haven't been a huge fan of Blake's recent output so it surprises me not that 2 of my favorite cuts from him are "Draggin' The River" and "Sunny In Seattle". Josh Turner's "Another Try" is another simply phenomenal song. Suffice it to say that I'm really rooting for Mr. Stapleton.

Didn't he write "Come Back Song" too? I seem to remember an interview with him talking about that song. He's obviously a talented song writer and is getting his chance to breakthrough with a lot of A list support.

He's obviously a talented song writer and is getting his chance to breakthrough with a lot of A list support. Yes, he did write Come Back Song. His 4 #1's are Come Back Song, Your Man, Love's Gonna Make It Alright, and Never Wanted Nothing More. When his record comes out, one song I know for sure will blow everyone away is You Should Probably Leave. As far as I know right now, there is no footage of it on YouTube or anywhere else, but I've heard it live a few times (his wife Morgane always joins him on it - incredible) and it is just so good. I've been lucky enough to hear a studio version of it from a friend at SeaGayle as well. This man, along with Ashley Monroe and Kacey Musgraves (and even Charlie Worsham, Greg Bates, to name a few), are the newcomers that are going to keep good, meaningful country music alive as the big names bring it downhill. Bottom line, What Are You Listening To? deserves to be a smash.

Lots of songs deserve to be smashes but right now the radio climate is such that many of them are overlooked for more "fun" fare (Bourbon in Kentucky the most recent travesty). I adore Chris and want him to have the success he so deserves (much like everyone you mentioned shainabotwin), I just don't see him smashing like everyone expects him to, and it's certainly through no fault of his own... it's just how dumbed down country is right now. Yes, I admit I am HUGELY cynical and seriously loathing the direction country/radiois headed in. (Chris did backing vocals on Dierks' "Fallin' For You" from Up on the Ridge.)

This one is so powerful. The story, the imagery. It stands apart.
Also co wrote A track on Luke Bryan's new record, "something to do with my hands" with Thomas Rhett, "Hell Bent On A Heartache" with Guy Clark for Guy's new record, "Front Porch Thing" by little big town on "tornado" (and Adam Hood's album) "Stop Cheating On Me" on Kellie Pickler's "100 Proof." "Nobody's Fool" on Miranda's Four The Record, "Keep on loving you" Steel Magnolia, "I'm Sorry". By Blake shelton "I Didn't Know It At The Time" Tim McGraw. "Forever road" - Darius Rucker "Never Loving you" - Blake Shelton And on and on.

Well, this is terrific. It's not the first time we've had a song about wanting to connect to a person who is somewhere else through a song both may be hearing, but I love the way Chris Stapleton's speculation about what the woman he is singing to may be listening to doubles as anxiety about what it says about her state of mind. Is she also pining, is she trying to forget, has she moved on? That "or is it someone new?" is especially poignant. And Chris Stapleton's voice and phrasing melts me. "What Are You Listening To?" feels like by far the most natural recording on country radio right now.
So naturally, early signs are that it will crawl on the charts. That Thomas Rhett's "It Goes Like This," which is also built around the idea of connecting to a love through a song (one that he wants to write) but is so underwritten, poorly sung and uninteresting, is flourishing as a download seller and an airplay hit while "What Are You Listening To?" is barely hanging on to its spot in the Mediabase top-50 sums up the state of mainstream country today, as far as I'm concerned.

Great voice and great song!! This guy's voice blows Jamey Johnson and Jerrod Niemann out of the water imo. I'm sure Chris will get screwed by lovely radio politics though...
Can't wait to add this to my iPod!

I wish radio would jump on board with this song and artist. Chris is what Country radio should be about, artistry! It used to be that way and Chris may be a decade too late. If Country radio played more music like this it'd be a pleasure to listen to again.

If Country radio played more music like this it'd be a pleasure to listen to again. It's struggling right now but I think UMG will work it to radio more. Here's a case of a guy EVERYONE in Nashville who has either met him or heard him sing, loves him. It's a case of getting to the right 'time of the year' for such a single, which is Fall.
