Southern Girls was #1 on Mediabase. #1 in Billboard. Blake Shelton got the Billboard #1.

Blake Shelton got the Billboard #1. I was referring to the #1 in Billboard. Will Tim McGraw get there?

I think the idea was for Big Machine to push Tim for the Billboard #1 this week, since he got Mediabase last week. Essentially, they would switch charts with Blake. Blake got the BB #1 last week, and so Big Machine would trade and concede the Mediabase #1 to him this weekend.
So far, the switch hasn't occurred on either chart. Blake is still tracking #1 on the Billboard RTT, and Tim remains #1 on Mediabase. I do think we're going to see the change on Mediabase, though. If not tomorrow, I think Blake will get there on Sunday. Blake is now ahead in both spins and audience. In today's update, Blake gained a whopping 135 spins while Tim was basically flat (-2 spins), and Blake also out-gained Tim in audience (553k to 204k). I don't see how Tim's lead can hold up.
But the reason I *think* Tim and Big Machine are still hanging in there is because they want the BB #1 too. Tim co-hosts Lon Helton's show this weekend, so that extra spin on Sunday could give him the last-day push that he needs to grab the BB #1. Blake will be losing an extra spin on Sunday, and having already wrapped up the BB #1, Warner Bros. probably won't feel the need to push for extra airplay on Sunday, since the Mediabase week wraps up Saturday at midnight and if that's indeed WB's only goal, then they can concede the Billboard chart to Tim/Big Machine.
I'm merely pointing out that the switch hasn't happened on either chart yet, but I still think it will happen.

Terrible song but radio still eats it up because its Tim If radio didn't like this song, they would NOT have taken it to #1 because of the artist who recorded it. Tim isn't even an automatic hit maker with radio anymore and was really fading away until he signed to Big Machine. Radio-friendliness, decent sales, and good research are among the merits that took this up the charts. It is important to remember that not everyone agrees that this is a terrible song.

Radio-friendliness, decent sales, and good research are among the merits that took this up the charts. It is important to remember that not everyone agrees that this is a terrible song. Your absolutely right. We all must remember that even though the majority of this board doesn't like "Southern Girl" or the dozens of lousy singles that radio as fed us recently. Most people do. Songs do not become chart toppers if more people dislike them than like them. I know plenty of people who loved "That's My Kind Of Night" even though I think it's total pile of waste. Tim had a string of singles proving his career at radio was falling fast, until he climbed aboard the mega monster that is Big Macine Label Group. "Drugs or Jesus" "Suspicions" "Kristofferson" "Still" Even "Truck Yeah" barely got to #10 on mediabase after he hooked on with Big Machine. So to say that "Southern Girl" is terrible but Tim is the only reason radio sends it to the top of the charts is not entirely true. Churchchoir's points on radio friendly, sales, and research, plus following "Highway Don't Care" is why "Southern Girl" got to be a huge hit, and not because its terrible....Even though that would have been more than enough of a reason for me to have it flop, cause I strongly dislike this song.

I can understand why that's my kind of night was huge, it was the best of those types of songs. Southern girl feels like cut and paste without much thought put in

If Southern Girl does peak at #2, I will be able to move Tim McGraw from #25 to #20 on the list of those artists with the most #2s (at seven for McGraw). He has not had a #2 hit since 2008's Let It Go.

Can Tim McGraw punch it in this week and claim #1 on Billboard? Or will Blake Shelton make it a threepeat?

I really hope Two Lanes of Freedom is what closes the era if we get one more single. I can't imagine this great album having it's era begin with Truck Yeah, then end with Southern Girl...

Tim was #1 on Mediabase/Aircheck 2 weeks ago ... that counts as a real #1 in anyone on Music Row's book ... all record labels, publishers, artists and songwriters will officially count either Billboard or Mediabase/Aircheck as a #1. All the other charts pretty much don't matter.

I was simply responding to the question of whether this would hit #1 on Billboard, saying it won't be close, likely landing at #4 this week (on both charts).

Hopefully a new single will be announced tomorrow evening in either Country Aircheck or BCU, if not earlier in the day.

"Friend of a Friend" is more than likely going to be the new single. It's debuting high on the Mediabase chart and my radio station has been playing it as the "new single". I really hope this is the case. I love this Album and definitely think one of the ballads needs to be released. The more I've listened to the Album the more I have liked Friend of a Friend so I wouldn't be disappointed to see him end this era with that one.

^It may just be a case where a radio station is just playing it because they want to. I haven't seen anything else to lead me to believe he'll have a another single.

^Hopefully it will be announced soon then. I attended one of his concerts this past year and he stated "Friend Of Friend" was his favorite song on this Album and he also tweeted that to someone that asked the question at one time. Maybe he has pushed for it to be a single if he likes it that well.

It's 5 minutes long, so I'm sure there will be a radio edit. It sounds like it could be a hit, although I'd prefer "Two Lanes of Freedom" being the final single. Big Machine is done with this record. The next single will be off the new record and hit radio Jan 2014.

Ludicrous if they're really done with this album. :( But I think I'd rather a new era than if Friend of a Friend was the next single, that would've just been another single choice to piss me off.

^I don't think that's why people don't buy albums. We've seen time and time again that big radio hits don't really translate into big album sales anymore. People don't buy albums nearly as much because the album is going extinct. It's as simple as that. Just like cassettes and everything else before them. In the digital age, people can listen to music through tons of online services, and they only have to shell out a few bucks to buy the tracks that they like, rather than spending $10+ on a full album.
The problem is that a $1.29 digital single does not make the labels as much money as a full album does. Therefore, some artists are trying to release albums a little more quickly, because even if they only sell 500k nowadays, if you can get an album out every 18-24 months or so, that's still making some money. But if every album had 4-5 singles or more, there would be 2 1/2 to 3 year gaps between every single album, and that's not what labels want.
As for Tim's current album, I'll be disappointed if we don't get one more single, but I understand why the label might want to move on already, especially if Tim is ready to go with another batch of new songs. Still, I wouldn't write off a 5th single until we get confirmation from an official source..

^ The second paragraph is exactly why we only get three singles a majority of the time. Unless your a huge artist, you rarely get past three singles now and days. Hell even if you are, a label like Big Machine would much rather have three guaranteed hits and more money from new music with a new album than going 5 singles deep and risk losing money and momentum. Edit: Screwed up my original quote plan, but I still wanted to give Jamie full credit. :)

There are several 'official sources' that we allow on this board; your comment makes no sense.

Comment wasn't directed specifically at you, so there's no need for this tone. It's perfectly acceptable for members to discuss the possibility of a 5th single until we know for sure what the label's plans are. Anyone can go in a thread and say "this is the last single", but that doesn't necessarily mean the information is true or not. All I was saying is that we'll either a) get confirmation that there will be a 5th single or b) the label will announce a brand new single likely sometime next year, which, in essence, would be confirmation that "Southern Girl" will indeed be the final single. I'm leaning towards SG being the final single, but we don't know that yet. But someone coming in here, making a statement, and expecting everyone to believe it as a fact is not confirmation.

With two solo #1 singles this year, including Mediabase's #2 single of 2013 with 'One Of Those Nights' as well as the year's 4th biggest duet trailing only 'Cruise', 'Get Your Shine On', and 'If I Didn't Have You', this has been a huge year for Tim, and 2014 will hepefully be another solid year for him, in spite of the underwhelming 'Southern Girl' somehow making it to #1.
