American Top 40 - June 29, 2013

It feels like it's been a while since the chart was put up early on the web site (even a little). Unfortunately, it's not a terribly exciting one. Very little in the way of movement (the two biggest movers, "Crazy Kids" and "Blurred Lines", only move 4 spots) and turnover (just the one debut).

As usual, the early chart is bare bones. Won't know anything about the extras until tomorrowp, but there's sure to be a boatload of songs "On The Verge" (gee, wonder if we'll hear Austin Mahone? -- UPDATE: Ka-ching!) Side note..."What About Love" gets played for a fourth week, but no replay for "Ooh La La"?

Guest host reminder -- Pitbull sits in for Ryan, next week, as AT40 turns 43 (I can think of worse ways to celebrate a birthday).

Before playing #1, Ryan noted the 43rd anniversary of AT40, playing a piece of "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" and thanking Casey Kasem for his service. Ryan semi-appropriated Casey's signature phrase, saying after all these years "we're still keeping our feet on the ground, and reaching for the stars".

It occurs to me...this is the 43rd anniversary, but this year, AT40 also celebrates 40 (non-consecutive) years on the air (it was cancelled for 3 years -- 02/01/95 through 03/21/98). Not that the show would recognize that.

Three years ago Ryan said that AT40 had been on for 40 consecutive years, which could only be correct if you count CT40 toward that total. It's almost as if they somehow scrubbed Shadoe Stevens from the show's history; only Casey and Ryan shows are played or usually referenced as regular hosts.

And they recognize R&R's chart history from 1973 onward rather than Billboard's (for example, Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" is credited as a #1 hit even though it never actually hit #1 on AT40).

I liked the way Ryan talked about Casey and said that all these years later that Ryan can do it thanks to Casey letting him host the show every week. I loved it when Ryan said what Casey always said about keeping our feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.

It really is strange about the rewriting of AT40 history. Technically, Casey wasn't even doing AT40 from '88 till '98.
Each of the Macklemore/Ryan Lewis songs sounds really different. Of course they have different featured artists, but still.
Miley's having a party and she can do what she wants. (Another Lesley Gore reference?)
Right after things are blurry at #18, we get some clarity at #17. And the The songs stay back to back again.
The segment lengths are very uneven. For instance, in the second hour, not counting the optional extra, there were 5 songs,
then 4, then 3. Very slow week. Pitbull should be interesting next week.
