www.billboard.com/articles/news/1568843/wale-scores-first-no-1-album-on-billboard-200-chartWale Scores First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 03, 2013 Rapper Wale claims his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart this week, as his new release "The Gifted" debuts in the top position. The set sold 158,000 copies in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's Wale's second top 10 album, following his last release, 2011's "Ambition." It debuted and peaked at No. 2 with 164,000 sold, but was blocked by another debuting album that week: Justin Bieber's "Under the Mistletoe" (with a 210,000 bow). Kanye West's "Yeezus," which bowed at No. 1 last week with 327,000 copies sold, falls by 80% to No. 3, selling 65,000 in its sophomore frame. Last week's other big debut, J. Cole's "Born Sinner," holds its position at No. 2, selling 84,000 with a more moderate 72% decline. Rock band Skillet arrives at No. 4 with its eighth studio album, "Rise," selling 60,000. It also launches at No. 1 on the Rock Albums and Christian Albums charts. It's the group's first No. 1 on the Rock tally, and second leader on the Christian chart. "Rise" follows the lengthy chart success of the act's last studio effort, 2009's "Awake." It debuted and peaked at a career-high No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (68,000 debut) and ruled for 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart. Further, it spent 136 weeks on the Billboard 200 and has sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S. Two more new albums arrive in the top 10 this week: R&B singer/songwriter India.Arie enters at No. 7 with "SongVersation" (31,000) and another rock act, August Burns Red, bows at No. 9 with "Rescue & Restore" (26,000). This marks India.Arie's fifth top 10 album on the Billboard 200 in as many tries. Her last release, 2009's "Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics," bowed at No. 3 with 75,000. She's topped the tally once previously, with 2006's "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship." On Top R&B Albums this week, "SongVersation" bows at No. 1. For August Burns Red, the band achieves its first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with its latest release. Their previous high came when its last studio set, 2011's "Leveler," debuted and peaked at No. 11 off a 29,000 start. Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" rises 6-5 with 31,000 (down 23%) and Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" climbs 8-6 with almost 31,000 (down 7%). (The sales figures for Nos. 5-7 are rounded to the nearest 1,000, which is 31,000 for each. The titles are separated by only a few hundred copies, and all sold between 30,500 and 31,000.) Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" ascends 10-8 with 29,000 (up 13%) and Black Sabbath's "13" dips 5-10 with 25,000 (down 44%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, is steady at No. 1, moving 423,000 downloads (down less than 1%). Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" doesn't seem to be stopping, as the song grows by 30% in sales, jumping from No. 6 to No. 2 with 209,000. Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" falls 2-3 with 204,000 (down 16%), Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" drops 3-4 with 194,000 (down 16%) and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," featuring Pharrell Williams, moves 4-5 with 189,000 (down 8%). Bruno Mars' "Treasure" steps backwards 5-6 with 158,000 (down 15%) while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" is steady at No. 7 with 142,000 (up 6%). The duo's "Same Love" (featuring Mary Lambert) rallies 23-8 with 111,000 (up 33%), and its seventh consecutive weekly sales gain. The song also climbs 24-22 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (known as Mainstream Top 40 on Billboard.biz). Selena Gomez's "Come & Get It" rises one notch to No. 9 with 109,000 (though it's down by 4%). Closing out the top 10 is a new arrival -- at least to the top 10: Anna Kendrick's "Cups," which motors 21-10 with 105,000 (up 19%) -- its best sales week yet. The song, from the movie "Pitch Perfect" (in which Kendrick stars), is also gaining at radio, as it rises 19-18 on Pop Songs airplay this week. The sales rise is also owed to the movie's premium cable premiere on June 22 on HBO. Six days later, the film's official Facebook page encouraged its fans to purchase "Cups" in the hopes of sending it into the top 10 in the iTunes Store. This week, the soundtrack to the movie also vaults 38-20 on the Billboard 200 with the chart's largest percentage gain, rising by 67% to sell 16,000 copies. Its cumulative sales now stand at 753,000. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending June 30) totaled 4.97 million units, down 10% compared with the sum last week (5.51 million) and down 13% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.74 million). Year to date album sales stand at 142 million, down 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (150.46 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.21 million downloads, down 5% compared with last week (26.51 million) and down less than 1% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (25.29 million). Year to date track sales are at 26.51 million, down 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (698.02 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Chris Brown's "Fortune" flew in at No. 1, debuting with 135,000 sold. Behind him at No. 2 was a surging Katy Perry, whose album "Teenage Dream" jumped 21-2 with 80,000 sold (up 417%) after it was discounted to 99-cents (for one day only) by Amazon MP3.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-june-30-2013-albums-hip-hop-152636706.htmlWeek Ending June 30, 2013. Albums: A Hip-Hop Fourth!By Paul Grein | Chart Watch Hip-hop makes a clean sweep of the top three spots on The Billboard 200 this week. Wale’s third album, The Gifted, debuts at #1. J. Cole’s second album, Born Sinner, holds at #2 in its second week. Kanye West’s Yeezus drops from #1 to #3 in its second week. (That’s the biggest second-week percentage drop for an album that debuted at #1 since sales of Madonna’s MDNA plummeted by 87% in its second week in April 2012.) This marks the first time that rap albums have ranked #1 back-to-back since Drake’s Take Care displaced Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park in November 2011. The Gifted is Wale’s first #1 album. His sophomore album, Ambition, debuted and peaked at #2 in November 2011. Wale has also appeared on two Self Made albums with Maybach Music Group. Rick Ross founded the collective, which also features such artists as Meek Mill and French Montana. Wale (real name: Ralph Victor Folarin) was born in Washington D.C. in 1984. The Gifted sold 95K digital copies (out of 158K total), which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. The Gifted tops The Billboard 200 less than three years after Susan Boyle’s similarly-titled The Gift spent four weeks in the lead spot. So if you were to make an alphabetical list of #1 albums, these very different albums would be back-to-back. Wale isn’t the first artist to use the word “gifted” in an album title. Aretha Franklin titled a 1972 album Young, Gifted & Black. The album, which reached #11 on The Billboard 200, contained the top 10 hits “Rock Steady” and “Daydreamin’” Color Me Badd parodied Franklin’s title (the nerve!) with their 1993 compilation Young, Gifted And Badd—The Remixes. It peaked at #189. After two weeks, J. Cole’s album has sold 381K copies, just 11K fewer than Kanye West’s album. The gap between these two artists’ last albums was much wider at this point. After two weeks, West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had sold 605K copies—more than twice as many as J Cole’s 2011 album Cole World: The Sideline Story, which sold 272K copies in its first two weeks. Skillet’s eighth studio album, Rise, debuts at #4. This is the Contemporary Christian group’s second top 10 album. Awake hit #2 in 2009. (FYI, Herb Alpert had a top 10 album titled Rise in 1979.) Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times rebounds from #8 to #5. It returns to #1 on Top Country Albums, after being displaced last week by another red-hot debut album, Hunter Hayes’ Hunter Hayes. Here’s To The Good Times is the first debut album to log two or more weeks at #1 on Top Country Albums since Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day, which spent six weeks on top in 2011. India.Arie’s fifth studio album, Songversation, debuts at #7. All five albums of these albums have made the top 10. The third, Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship, reached #1. August Burns Red’s sixth studio album, Rescue & Restore, debuts at #9. It’s the band’s first top 10 album. Leveler hit #11 in 2011. August Burns Red is a metalcore band whose members are Christian, but they’re not a Christian rock band per se. “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. & Pharrell Williams holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the fifth week. It sold 423K copies, down just a tick from last week’s 424K. Will “Blurred Lines” also hold at #1 for the third week on the Hot 100? Count on it. But you’ll find out for sure out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums. The Top Five: Wale’s The Gifted debuts at #1 (158K). It’s his second top 10 album…J. Cole’s Born Sinner holds at #2 in its second week (84K)…Kanye West’s Yeezus drops from #1 to #3 in its second week (65K)… Skillet’s Rise debuts at #4 (60K). It’s the group’s second top 10 album…Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories rebounds from #6 to #5 its sixth week (31K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time. The Second Five: Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times rebounds from #8 to #6 in its 30th week (31K). This is its fifth week in the top 10…India.Arie’s Songversation debuts at #7 (31K). It’s her fifth top 10 album…Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions rebounds from #10 to #8 in its 43rd week (29K). This is its 12th week in the top 10… August Burns Red’s Rescue & Restore debuts at #9 (26K). It’s the band’s first top 10 album…Black Sabbath’s 13 drops from #5 to #10 in its third week (26K). Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience drops from #9 to #17, ending, for now at least, a 14-week run in the top 10. Three other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Mac Miller’s Watching Movies With The Sound Off drops from #3 to #14. Kelly Rowland’s Talk A Good Game drops from #4 to #11. Hunter Hayes’ Hunter Hayes drops from #7 to #16. Shameless Plug: We’re about to post a Chart Watch Extra in which I look at the top 10 songs and albums of the first six months. The 20/20 Experience is the top album, with sales of 2,037,000. Amon Amarth lands its first top 20 album as the band’s ninth studio album, Deceiver Of The Gods, debuts at #19. Amon Amarth is a death metal band from Sweden. Its previous highest-charting album was its previous album, Surtur Rising, which peaked at #34. Pitch Perfect rebounds from #38 to #20 in its 36th week (as the movie hits HBO and as a sequel to the soundtrack, More Music From Pitch Perfect, debuts at #139). Pitch Perfect returns to #1 on Top Soundtracks, displacing The Great Gatsby: Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film. The album first topped the soundtrack chart the week ending Sept. 30. Pitch Perfect is the highest-ranking soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie for the 18th week. Anna Kendrick’s sleeper hit “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” is #17 on the Hot 100. Attila’s fifth album, About That Life, debuts at #22. This is the highest-charting album to date for the American “death-core” band…Queensryche’s 14th studio album, Queensryche, debuts at #22. It’s the heavy metal band’s second eponymous album. Its 1983 debut EP (which reached #81) was also titled Queensryche. Bob Marley & the Wailers’ 1984 compilation Legend vaults from #86 to #26 in its 274th week on the chart. The album peaked at #54 at the time but has climbed as high as #18 since the chart was opened to catalog albums in 2009. A new collection, Legend Remixed, debuts at #89 this week. Legend returns to #1 on Top Catalog Albums. This is its 115th week on top of that chart (in the Nielsen SoundScan era). The Beatles’ 2000 compilation 1 re-enters the chart at #37. Fun With Numbers: 1 is one of three albums in this week’s top 40 with a title that consists of a number and nothing else. The others are Black Sabbath’s 13 and Adele’s 21. The Beatles’ Help! re-enters the chart at #83, boosted by the release of the Blu-ray edition of the movie. The soundtrack logged nine weeks at #1 in 1965 and became the first Beatles album to receive a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It has sold 1,575,000 copies in the Nielsen SoundScan era. Help! re-enters Top Music Videos at #1, displacing Paul McCartney & Wings’ Rockshow. (The Beatles once displaced McCartney from #1 on The Billboard 200. It happened in June 1970 when Let It Be knocked out McCartney. It has happened the other way around, too. In June 1973, Red Rose Speedway replaced The Beatles/ 1967-1970.) Natalie Cole’s En Espanol debuts at #91. Recording in Spanish is a family tradition. Cole’s father, the great Nat “King” Cole, reached #12 in 1958 with Cole Espanol. (Natalie was eight at the time.) Alan Jackson this week becomes just the ninth artist to top 40 million in sales since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard. (This misses Jackson’s first year of success. Jackson’s debut album, Here In The Real World, hit the country and pop and charts in March 1990.) Jackson’s best-selling album is 1995’s The Greatest Hits Collection, which has sold 5,807,000 copies. How big is country music? Four of the nine artists who have hit 40M in Nielsen SoundScan-era sales are country: Garth Brooks (68,634,00), George Strait (44,440,000) and Tim McGraw (41,599,000). The top four albums on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 100 best albums (the Beatles’ Revolver, Prince & the Revolution’s Purple Rain, the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St and Michael Jackson’s Thriller) all reached #1 on The Billboard 200. But #5 on the list is an album that didn’t even make the top 20: The Clash’s London Calling, which, despite critical plaudits, stalled at #27 on the chart. Monsters University was #1 at the box-office for the second straight weekend. Coming Attractions: Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail is expected to debut at #1 next week. Also due: Joe’s Doubleback Evolution Of R&B, Relient K’s Collapsible Lung and Hillsong Live’s Glorious Ruins (Live).

This week, the soundtrack to the movie also vaults 38-20 on the Billboard 200 with the chart's largest percentage gain, rising by 67% to sell 16,000 copies. Its cumulative sales now stand at 753,000.
Album sales must be incredibly low!

^Yes. 4,974,000 were sold last week. The SS low was 4.7 or 4.8 million.
This upcoming chart week will be bad. Joe is the only major release with a 25k estimate.
Jay-Z will help next week.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1569251/chart-moves-pitch-perfect-soundtrack-climbs-bob-marleys-legendChart Moves: 'Pitch Perfect' Soundtrack Climbs, Bob Marley's 'Legend: Remixed' Debuts, Lorde's 'Love' Leaps By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 05, 2013 This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Wale celebrated his first No. 1, as "The Gifted" opened atop the list. The set sold 158,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was one of four debuts in the top 10 this week, with Skillet's "Rise" earning the second-highest bow at No. 4. Outside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 there were a number of movers and shakers, as usual. Let's take a look at some of them: -- Soundtrack, "Pitch Perfect" - No. 20 - The soundtrack vaults 38-20 on the Billboard 200 with the chart's largest percentage gain, rising by 67% to sell 16,000 copies. Its cumulative sales now stand at 753,000. The sales rise is owed to the movie's premium cable premiere on June 22 on HBO. Additionally, its fluke hit single "Cups" (by lead actress Anna Kendrick), continues to make airplay gains. This week, it rises 29-24 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart with 45.4 million audience impressions (up 12%, according to Nielsen BDS). The song also jumps 17-13 on the overall Billboard Hot 100 chart. -- Bob Marley and the Wailers, Legend: Remixed - No. 89 - Bob Marley and the Wailers' iconic greatest hits album, Legend, has received the remix treatment. The reworking of the set, dubbed Legend: Remixed, debuts at No. 89 with 5,000 sold. On the Reggae Albums chart, it becomes Marley's 16th No. 1 -- extending the record for the most No. 1s in the chart's 18-year history. Meanwhile, the original Legend album gets a boost up the Billboard 200 as well. It climbs 86-26 with the greatest unit gain on the chart (12,000 sold for the week -- up by 7,000). It increases in sales thanks to the publicity generated by Legend: Remixed and promotion of the original Legend itself. -- The Beatles/Soundtrack, Help! - No. 83 - The Beatles' 1965 film "Help!" debuted worldwide on Blu-ray and on iTunes on June 25, thus, its soundtrack climbs back onto the list. It re-enters at No. 83 with 5,000 sold for the week, with a gain of 1,418% in sales compared to the previous week. iTunes heavily promoted the film's digital bow in its store, and also prominently featured the band's catalog. In turn, the fab four's greatest hits album 1 zooms back onto the chart at No. 37 with 9,000 (up 300%). It's the highest chart rank for the former No. 1 album since the Oct. 15, 2011 chart, when it was at No. 30. -- Kacey Musgraves, Same Trailer Different Park - No. 56 - The country singer's album earns its fourth weekly sales gain out of the past six weeks as the set rises 63-56 with 7,000 sold (up 1%). Its current single, "Blowin' Smoke," is bulleted at No. 28 on the Country Airplay chart with 8 million in audience (up 1%). It also reaches a new peak on the overall Hot Country Songs chart, stepping 34-31. -- Lorde, The Love Club (EP) - No. 86 - The EP grabs its fifth straight sales gain in as many weeks, jumping 104-86 with 5,000 sold (up 20%). Its red-hot single "Royals" is making headway at radio, too. It rises 20-16 on the Alternative airplay chart. On Rock Digital Songs, in just its third week on the list, the cut climbs 15-11 with 24,000 downloads sold -- up 31%. It's the youngest title -- in terms of number of chart weeks -- within the top 20 on the Rock Digital Songs chart.
