Country Aircheck sent a couple of "Breaking News" emails out yesterday. The gist of them...it was basically like a multi-team, multi-player trade like they have in major sports. Townsquare Media acquired a total of 71 radio stations from both Cumulus and Peak Broadcasting (most from Cumulus). Cumulus then turned around and bought Dial Global.
» Deals Deals Deals: As reported earlier via Breaking News, Townsquare, Cumulus and Peak have entered into deals that will send 71 stations in 15 markets to Townsquare, making it the third-largest owner of radio stations in the nation with 312 in 66 markets. Cumulus will receive cash in an undisclosed amount for 53 stations in 12 markets. Townsquare is acquiring Peak's 11 stations in two markets for cash and equity. Finally, Peak/Fresno's five stations go to Cumulus in exchange for 15 stations in two markets (Dubuque, IA; Poughkeepsie, NY). Cumulus Country stations going to Townsquare include KHAK/Cedar Rapids, IA, WDBY/Danbury, CT, KOEL/Waterloo, IA, KRFO/Owatonna, MN, KDHL/Fairbault, MN, WITL/Lansing, MI, WOKQ & WPKQ/Portsmouth, NH, WXXQ/Rockford, IL, KFIL AM & FM/Rochester, MN, KWWK/Rochester, MN, WXKP & WZAD/Poughkeepsie, NY and WJOD/Dubuque, IA. Peak sends KAWO/Boise, ID to Townsquare and KSKS/Fresno to Cumulus. The deals are expected to close in the fourth quarter.
Also breaking this morning (8/30), Cumulus has acquired Dial Global for $260 million in cash ($45 million of equity and the retirement of $215 million in debt). Dial Global's Country programming includes the 24/7 radio formats Mainstream Country, Hot Country and Classic Country; weekday shows The Big Time with Whitney Allen and The Lia Show; weekend offerings Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40, Country Gold with Randy Owen, America's Opry Weekend, CMT Radio Insider and Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton. Cumulus also acquires NFL, NCAA, NASCAR, Olympics, AP Radio News, NBC News and other programming. Cumulus is expected to resurrect the Westwood One brand as it incorporates these new properties into its content lineup, though there has been no official confirmation of that.

From Billboard:
Harry Connick Jr. is returning to "American Idol" -- this time, in a judge's seat. The singer, who has appeared on the Fox reality competition multiple times as a mentor and performer, is inking a deal to serve as a judge alongside Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez on the upcoming 13th season, a source close to the show tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The news comes one week after THR revealed that Dr. Luke, previously considered a frontrunner for the position, dropped out of negotiations due to a conflict with his label at Sony Music. (Sony rival Universal Music Group holds exclusive rights to "American Idol" recordings.)
Earlier this week, THR reported that Connick was a contender for the gig as Fox was reluctant to bring another woman on board after last season's friction between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, which did not play well with the show's key older female demographic. While the network had hoped to bring an industry professional into the mix, time is of the essence. Had the show not signed a third judge soon, production could have faced a delay.
On Thursday evening, Idol producer Simon Fuller hosted a small party in the champagne room of Los Angeles hotspot Bouchon with series mainstay Randy Jackson (who will move from judge to mentor in the upcoming season), Urban, Lopez and Connick on hand to toast the forthcoming announcement.
Friday morning, Ryan Seacrest set fans' tongues wagging with a tweet: "Got some @americanidol news for you coming very soon…"
Fox declined to comment.

I just happened to stumble on this, but a singer named Kyle Park (never heard of him before) has recorded a song and released a video titled Fit for a King, which is a tribute to George Strait. The song ends with the instrumental intro to The Cowboy Rides Away.

She's absolutely right, but I hope she's not going to hurt her chances at mainstream success by speaking out a lot. Kacey Musgraves Disses Songs About Trucks“Anyone singing about trucks, in any form, in any song, anywhere, literally just stop—nobody cares!” she says. Brad Schmitt | Published: Aug 30, 2013. Think she’s just blowin’ smoke? Kacey Musgraves continues to position herself as an edgy alternative country artist, this time by declaring that she’s over songs about trucks. And Kacey doesn’t leave herself much wiggle room. “Anyone singing about trucks, in any form, in any song, anywhere, literally just stop—nobody cares!” Kacey tells British GQ. Yikes! And here’s what makes that declaration even more uncomfortable: Starting in November, Kacey opens for Lady Antebellum along with Kip Moore, who happens to have a giant hit with “Somethin’ ’Bout a Truck.” Awkward . . . link

She could've worded her statement a lot better, but it's nice to see someone like her saying what we all have been saying. Hopefully country fans aren't too hard on her for those comments, because female artists in country music can't get away with anything. I swear everything CMT posts about Jana Kramer now gets bogged down with commentary about how she's a hussy for breaking it off with Brantley and Taylor Swift will forever get the "not country" critiques at every chance. People can be so judgmental.

...we all know my stance on that. Needless to say, I'm #teamKacey on this one. Now, she'd be making one hell of a statement if she said those words and then released "Follow Your Arrow" as the next single.

The problem I see in Kacey's comment is that she said "nobody cares". That doesn't present a very good tone. And obviously the truck and tailgate songs are very popular on country radio right now but also with consumers. I'm definitely frustrated like Kacey is but if she felt she needed to make some comments, I wish she would've considered her words a bit more. I think she made those comments a while ago, though, so hopefully they don't hurt her when it comes to how she's perceived by radio. She's not the only one, though...there are a lot of fans and even other artists/songwriters who are on record for wishing that country radio and the fans would move away from this "I'm country!/truck yeah!/beer and hot girls!" phase. I just think Kacey needs to be more careful, because I think she can actually establish a career with radio's help, and then, once she has a much bigger fan-base, she can challenge listeners even more, whether it's through comments or songs, because with a large fan-base, it's much harder for radio to turn down your music. Anyway...how about a nice song about trucks? Actually, the song is called "Songs About Trucks" but it fits right in with what Kacey was saying, and it's by incredibly talented Texan Wade Bowen. Listen here. A few lyrics: What ever happened to a feeling-bad song Lost-the-bast-damn-woman-that-you-ever-had song It's all 4-wheel drives and jacked-up tires Rollin' out of them speakers But for a trip down memory lane tonight I need somethin' a little deeper
Than S-10 Chevies or F-150's Flat-bed Dodge Ram dirt road ditties Headlights, Taillights, Daddy's El Dorado Dashboards, Ditches, or Silver Silverados Down by the lake or down by the river Mud bank, no thanks, I'm just gonna sit here And miss her So mister, here's my 20 bucks Don't play no songs about trucksCountry radio passed on Wade Bowen when he was with BNA Records (now Columbia) a couple years ago. BNA did release his album The Given in May 2012 and it's one of my favorite albums, but it only spawned the minor top 40 hit "Saturday Night" (#39 peak). Another single was released but only in Texas and then Sony and Bowen parted ways. Since then Bowen has primarily gone back to the Texas radio scene. I hope he's working on another album, because I'm definitely a fan and I'd love to go out and buy another Wade Bowen album.

I've seen that comment from Kacey before, so that isn't anything new unless she's said it again in a recent interview. But I feel like Kacey has already established herself as someone who is going to do her own thing no matter what, so I don't think that comment will come back to bite her later. I do agree that the "nobody cares" part should have been worded more carefully, but I commend her for sticking up for what she believes in, true country music.

"People are drawn to truth and something that comes from a real place and not something contrived. I feel like the majority of people are into honest stuff. Regardless, I didn’t really care if radio would play it because it feels good to me. If radio was the bar or meter on how I made my music, I wouldn’t be making the music that I’ve made. There are people who love it and if radio wants to play it, cool. If not, I’ll still be doing the same thing. It’s therapeutic to me." — Kacey Musgraves

Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour: Live is #1 on Top Music Videos for the third week. This marks the first time that a video by a female country artist has logged three weeks at #1 since this chart originated (as Top Music Videocassettes) in March 1985. Shania Twain’s The Woman In Me, Martina McBride’s CMT Crossroads (a collabo with Train) and Taylor Swift’s Journey To Fearless all spent two weeks at #1. In addition, a female country group, Dixie Chicks, spent two weeks on top with An Evening With The Dixie Chicks. Underwood’s Blown Away album topped The Billboard 200 for two weeks; Top Country Albums for seven weeks. - Yahoo! Chart Watch

I'll make some time to listen to those previews again soon. He also reminds me of a slightly skinnier version of one of my suite-mates from college, but with a more sincere tone and sound to his material.

Alan Jackson is the man! If Tom Petty ruffled feathers, then this article will definitely hurt some egos! Good! tasteofcountry.com/alan-jackson-no-country-left/Alan Jackson knows there’s plenty of great music to be found on country radio, but he misses the “real roots-y, traditional stuff” — real country music. The legend admits he’s sad about the lack of “country stuff” and finds himself wondering if it’ll ever come back. “I don’t know if it’ll ever be back on mainstream radio,” Jackson tells the Baltimore Sun. “You can’t get it played anymore. It’s always been that constant pop-country battle. I don’t think it’s ever going to change.” “It’s not that I’m against all that’s out there,” he assures. “There’s some good music, good songwriting and good artists out there, but there’s really no country stuff left.” Few will call Jackson anything but country, and his upcoming bluegrass album is said to be “rootsier” than he’s ever been before. ‘The Bluegrass Album‘ will be available on Sept. 24. It’s his second album on EMI Nashville. The debate about what qualifies as country and what doesn’t has never been more intense, as stars from outside the genre — like Tom Petty — comment on an already hot topic. Jackson says he doesn’t hate the music that’s found on country radio today, but wishes a more traditional sound was better represented.

Sirius XM reported that Easton Corbin quietly got divorced about a year ago. I thought it was kind of odd how kissy and flirty he was with his female costars in the "All Over the Road" and "Lovin' You Is Fun" videos. I know married actors do it all the time, but for a married country singer to do it in back-to-back videos... it just seemed odd... and that he had a very tolerant wife. Now it makes more sense.

A local DJ on one of the country stations here in Phoenix (can't remember if it was KNIX or KMLE) mentioned just yesterday that someone she knew had told Easton recently "happy anniversary" to which Easton replied that he had recently gotten divorced. The DJ was kinda annoying, though, because she sounded all enthusiastic about it...almost like "Hey guys, guess what I found out before anyone else did?! Easton Corbin got divorced!!" The way she reported it wasn't very tasteful, that's for sure.
Anyway, sorry to hear that about Easton. I don't know if it has anything to do with him and his music videos, though. Hopefully he is able to get through this difficult time. He's definitely one of my favorite artists on the radio these days.

One of the reasons why I love this woman; I can relate to her on quite a number of levels. Very happy to see her make light of that situation; I most likely would've done the same thing.
Very sad to hear about Easton. I hope he's doing well, regardless.

There must have been some recent change of plans with Kelly Clarkson, or at least a whole project got a green-light, because last week for the first time she started talking about releasing a full country album next year instead of the usual spiel of one album with both pop and country on it. In this interview with WGNA last week, she says it's almost completely recorded and at her last 4 concerts when introing Tie It Up, she's mentioned that they have plans to release a full country album (and a pop album) after they get through the Christmas one. I knew she had been recording a lot of material this year, but the news of two full and separate albums has taken me by surprise a little bit. In my head, I figured that if they were to release anything else to country it would be more of an EP instead of LP.

No Charlotte for George? Wow! I was counting on him coming this time since he didn't this year! Oh well I guess the last time I saw him here will have to be the last time, cause I'm sure not going all the way to Atlanta. He did come to Greensboro this year but I figured for sure he'd do Charlotte in 14. Oh well!

This is completely random, but since football season is here and Carrie Underwood is now singing the Sunday Night Football song, I think they should get Kenny Chesney to sing the Monday Night one. I know he used to do one for college football, but I'm not sure if he still does. I think he would do an awesome job, plus he loves football. On a side note, Carrie totally rocked that song! It was the only thing good on that channel from 8:20-11:45 PM...
