This is a song that I feel like I'd be sick to death of by the time it would hit recurrency. I'll be shocked if it goes that long on this format tbqh.

I find funny that when every alternative artist hit the top 50 on pop, there are people complaining about why they release such song instead of some other wich is a lot better (generally they released that song because it's the first that give them success).
I love tennis court, but this is more instant catchy than tennis court, and i think it will pave the road to tennis court to smash. The same way It's time make it a lot easier to Radioactive

Lorde First Woman In 17 Years To Top Alternative Songs With 'Royals'The New Zealand singer/songwriter, just 16, is the first lead solo female to rule the ranking since Tracy Bonham in 1996 (months before Lorde was born) With the aptly-titled "Royals," Lorde becomes the first lead solo female to crown Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Alternative Songs chart in more than 17 years. No female soloist, in fact, had led the list as a lead artist in Lorde's lifetime until this week. Tracy Bonham was the last to do so when "Mother Mother," her first chart entry (as "Royals" is for Lorde), reigned the weeks of June 8, 15 and 22, 1996. Lorde was born on Nov. 7, 1996. Not only does "Royals" end an almost two-decade drought for lead solo women atop Alternative Songs, the song is one of just 10 No. 1s by the fairer sex in the chart's nearly 25-year history. Of 309 overall No. 1s, here are the only leaders by solo females with lead billing: Title, Artist, Chart Date Reached No. 1 "Royals," Lorde, Aug. 24, 2013"Mother Mother," Tracy Bonham, June 8, 1996 "Ironic," Alanis Morissette, March 16, 1996 "Hand in My Pocket," Alanis Morissette, Oct. 14, 1995 "You Oughta Know," Alanis Morissette, July 22, 1995 "God," Tori Amos, March 19, 1994 "Blood Makes Noise," Suzanne Vega, Oct. 10, 1992 "The Emperor's New Clothes," Sinead O'Connor, May 12, 1990 "Nothing Compares 2 U," Sinead O'Connor, March 31, 1990 "Love and Anger," Kate Bush, Dec. 9, 1989 (Women's voices haven't been entirely absent from the chart's upper ranks over the last 17 years. Female-fronted groups like Evanescence (led by Amy Lee), Florence + the Machine (Florence Welch) and Paramore (Hayley Williams) have logged top 10s. Female soloists have also appeared as featured acts on such hits as fun.'s "We Are Young" (Janelle Monae) and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (Kimbra), while bands like Of Monsters and Men have mixed male and female vocals on their top 10s.) "Not since we launched Gotye have we seen such instant reaction," Republic senior VP of rock promotion Dennis Blair recently told Billboard of Lorde (nee Ella Yelich-O'Connor). Lorde's EP "The Love Club" has spent the last two weeks at its No. 49 highpoint so far on the Billboard 200, having sold 51,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her full-length debut album, "Pure Heroine," is expected on Sept. 30 in the U.S. "When I saw the video, listened to the lyrics and saw the sheer number of hits and fan remakes online … you can see there's a wave, a big wave," adds Michael Martin, PD of alternative KITS San Francisco. "We're riding that wave with our audience."

Admittedly, I pressed "play" on the YT link in the thread and then went looking elsewhere, not paying attention to the video - I had like six tabs open at the time, most of them other Pop threads.

You're one of the few people then. Most people's reactions are shock to find she's 16...

You're one of the few people then. Most people's reactions are shock to find she's 16... It's still not as shocking as people finding out that Carly Rae Jepsen was 26 when she released "Call Me Maybe".

I think you people talking about how this is boring and not good are going to be very upset when this is a huge hit. I happen to like it but I can hear this absolutely blowing up on radio, whether I liked it or not.

I'd bet money this is what Britney's latest record will sound like. Might be dreaming big, but minimal R&B/Hip-Hop/Lo-Fi sound is my guess for the next wave of pop.
So it's not just this song. Y'all are gonna have to learn to love it.

It's pretty obvious that this is going to be massive. She could very easily become a one-hit wonder, but she could also become huge and the new IT girl of 2014. Very excited to see how far this (and her) can go.

I just marvel at the manhattan shade that this song reeks of. The only place where people think about post code envy is NYC. I never even knew of such a concept before being here in NYC.

I think she has the ability to get at least two hits. She's in a different position than Gotye as she has two #1s in New Zealand without even releasing the album yet whereas Gotye was pretty much already ruled a one-hit wonder before it even came to America. I'm just so proud that one of my international acts has FINALLY crossed over in a timely fashion.

To be fair, while Gotye has only had the one mainstream hit, he's had plenty of success in Australia on JJJ (basically our alternative radio) dating back to 2006. Lorde's "Tennis Court" is yet to receive any mainstream radio support here in Australia, and over in NZ I feel like it's probably significantly benefited from the highly uncommon feat of her being an NZ artist having worldwide success. I agree though :)
