This is kind of a random question, but who wxactly is Michael Jackson's estate? As when they say "MJ's estate decided to do this", "decided to sell that" and so on.

This is kind of a random question, but who wxactly is Michael Jackson's estate? As when they say "MJ's estate decided to do this", "decided to sell that" and so on. I took this from Wikipedia, but it is accurate: "Estate Jackson's last will was filed by attorney John Branca at the Los Angeles County courthouse on July 1, 2009. Signed July 7, 2002, it names Branca and accountant John McClain as executors; they were confirmed as such by a Los Angeles judge on July 6, 2009.[81] All assets are given to the (pre-existing) Michael Jackson Family Trust (amended March 22, 2002),[82] the details of which have not been made public. The Associated Press reports that, in 2007, Jackson had a net worth of $236.6 million: $567.6 million in assets, which included Neverland Ranch and his 50% share of Sony/ATV Music Publishing' catalogue, and debts of $331 million.[83] The guardianship of his three children is given to his mother, Katherine, or if she is unable or unwilling, to singer Diana Ross.[84] The will states that Jackson's former wife Debbie Rowe was omitted intentionally.[85] Jackson's will allocates 20% of his fortune as well as 20% of money made after death to unspecified charities.[86] Media reports suggested that settlement of Jackson's estate could last many years.[87] The value of Sony/ATV Music Publishing is estimated by Ryan Schinman, chief of Platinum Rye, to be US$1.5 billion. Shinman's estimate makes Jackson's share of Sony/ATV worth US$750 million, from which Jackson would have had an annual income of US$80 million. Sony Corporation has not commented on whether it intends to buy Jackson's share of Sony/ATV from the Jackson estate. Jackson's creditors could force a distressed sale, which would act in Sony's favor since it would lower the sale price, but only if the trust set up by Jackson for his stake in Sony/ATV is revocable. A distressed sale would lower the value of Jackson's estate, and thus might not raise enough to cover the debts owed by the estate.[88]" Therefore, "they" basically control all things MJ related, whether that be the release of new albums ( Xscape), movies ( This Is It) or touring groups like Cirque du Soleill ( Michael Jackson Immortal). On June 25, 2015 it was revealed that since his passing in 2009, the estate has earned $2 billion.

But who exactly are "they"? Branca and McClain? They are the ones who call the shots?

But who exactly are "they"? Branca and McClain? They are the ones who call the shots? Basically, yes. I'm sure there are others involved (label, lawyers - Branca is a music lawyer) but they pretty much call the shots.

But they don't get to keep the money, right? Like, this $2 billion made since 2009.

Also, Thriller the album hit No. 1 for the first of its 37 weeks at the top exactly 33 years ago today. :)

Michael Jackson's estate sells stake in Sony/ATV music catalogue for $750M
"Michael Jackson's estate has agreed to sell its remaining stake in a lucrative music catalogue to Sony Corp. for $750 million US, the entities announced Monday.
The agreement for Jackson's half-share of the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalogue will give the company sole ownership of works by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and other hit making musicians, including Eminem and Taylor Swift.
The deal is another posthumous blockbuster deal for Jackson, whose estate has erased the singer's massive debts through a mixture of new music and movie ventures and re-releases of the singer's most popular music.
Jackson's estate benefits his mother and three children, known as Prince, Paris and Blanket.
"This agreement further demonstrates Sony's commitment to the entertainment businesses and our firm belief that these businesses will continue to contribute to our success for years to come," Sony Corp. president and CEO Kazuo Hirai wrote in a statement. The sale does not include rights to Jackson's master recordings or songs that he wrote, and the singer's estate will continue to have a stake in EMI Publishing, Inc. "This transaction further allows us to continue our efforts of maximizing the value of Michael's estate for the benefit of his children," the co-executors of Jackson's estate, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, wrote in a statement.
"It also further validates Michael's foresight and genius in investing in music publishing."
Jackson purchased the ATV portion of the catalogue in 1985 for $41.5 million US, and he later merged it with Sony.
It remained his most lucrative asset at the time of his death in June 2009 at age 50, though by that point Jackson was hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.
The deal for Jackson's half of the Sony/ATV catalog is expected to close by the end of March."

Been missing this guy more than usual lately. Came across this old HIStory commercial from '95 bumpin' one of the many album standouts "This Time Around."

Ugh I'm in LOVE with Mike and always will be. I just read a new book called Making Michael which is all about his career specifically the music and how they promoted each album and era, etc. it was a really nice read.
I've never seen that HIStory commercial, BTW that album is AMAZING and needs to be hailed as one of the best albums of all time tbh. The only okay song on it is D.S. but besides that it's literally excellent. I wish he had done that HBO special for it.

I revisit it more than any other MJ album (like, daily - with a possible exception made for Dangerous). Though, I love D.S., it's so rock/funk and most especially because those are my initials irl. Lyrical content aside, I know he wrote that for me. I'll have to check out Making Michael. Have you read Joseph Vogel's Man in the Music? It's AWESOME. Brings an in-depth look at all of his songs from every album (Off The Wall through Invincible) with some extras thrown in for each era.

LOL that's awesome that those are your initials, but something about that chorus is so blah to me. The song is one of his more repetitive/bland tracks for me. But YES I did read Man in the Music, I LOVE that one so much.

YES to the HIStory love happening! 90s MJ is the best. That's when he reinvented what it meant to be a pop star. His best work and it gets paid dust by the general public.

If the allegations didn't happen in '93 you already know Dangerous would have been looked at JUST as successful and amazing as Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad because it literally was? Like I'm so confused about the lack of attention it gets from the media (again, not confused, it's obviously because of the allegations but come on...); Black or White and Remember the Time are 2 of his best videos ever, Will You Be There should be looked at as a classic- especially since it was in Free Willy which was a HUGE movie at the time, then you had the Oprah interview (Who Is It gained a lot of attention there) and the Superbowl half time performance, the era was just massive. And the album sold just as much as Bad or around it... ugh it's just such a shame that those disgusting Chandler people decided to lie for money. I believe he was going to release Dangerous as the final single probably with another amazing video to add to the collection... his performances for that song are epic.

This November will be Dangerous's 25 anniversary. I hope we get a deluxe reissue similar to Bad25. Dangerous is his underrated masterpiece.

I <3 Dangerous. I have a shirt with that album cover on it. It's my fav. I'm pretty sure there was a lawsuit a few years ago about not all the vocals on Michael being his and it was proven that they are NOT.

Dangerous is also my favorite of his albums, with HIStory second and the other Epic releases tied for third (Blood on the Dance Floor included). I just can't pick one over the other. I don't listen to the Michael album that much as I much prefer many of the demos of the songs over the "finished" recordings. "Best of Joy" and "Much Too Soon" are two I do pull out from time to time though. Regrading the three Cascio tracks "Keep Your Head Up," "Monster" and "Breaking News" I'm of the opinion that they are not sung by MJ so I have removed them from my MJ playlist. Michaels estate has said time and time again that they are legit so who knows.Â

I don't use the Michael lp at all... I can't rank his albums cuz I grew up on BAD & Dangerous cassettes, HiStory album was the 1st CD ever I bought with my own pocket money when I was 6 or sth... I think Off the Wall is the MJ LP that I listen to in full most often... Thriller & what Mike did with it was groundbreaking and legendary + Lady in My Life is probably my fav ballad from him ... My fav visuals are from the Dangerous era, but I grew up watching The History Tour concert from Munich... Yep, it's always so complex and complicated.

In my personal chart his Bad era was not as successful as his HIStory or Dangerous eras Earthsong and They don't care about us both reached the top, plus You are not alone and Scream were top 5. History remix was also top 5. Heal the world, Black or white also reached the top, and top 5s were Remember the time, In the closet, Who is it. Give in to me was another great song. I thought Dangerous was a pretty solid effort. My second favorite after Thriller. That one was something else!
