Imagine if Rih comes out of nowhere in like October with two simultaneous, infectious, epic Hot 100 #1's a la "Only Girl" and "What's My Name?" just like five years ago (damn, already?). Well, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to imagine... she's suddenly an underdog. She was in a very similar situation between Rated R and Loud. Rockstar 101 tanked, but then there was Love the Way You Lie, and you know the rest. I'm still confident in her but she really needs to hurry the hell up. I'm hoping The Voice slot lined up is in correlation with the album. I mean, it only makes sense right?

Rated R actually didn't have to be such a non-commercial era with just one big hit if they played it right. Photographs, Fire Bomb, and Te Amo all had a lot of pop potential.

Fire Bomb as the lead single would have been dope. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Russian Roulette sooo much and always have- but FB had way more potential for radio.

Fire Bomb would have been a terrible single choice and would not have done well.
Hard, Rude Boy, Te Amo, and Photographs were the only ones with single potential, any order with those 4 would have been fine.
The less the Rated R period is used as a reference in any way aside from select visuals for future decisions, the better.

I'll always maintain that Photographs was a Hot 100 #1. It's nothing but catchy and had a very "in" sound for that time period.

But all of her eras have had multiple missed hits if you ask me, excluding Loud which was almost perfect. Just for fun and cause I'm bored, here's my alternate history of Rihanna singles since GGGB:
GGGB era: 1. Umbrella 2. Don't Stop the Music 3. Hate That I Love You 4. Rehab 5. Sell Me Candy 6. Breaking Dishes 7. Take a Bow 8. Disturbia
Rated R era: 1. Photographs 2. Rude Boy 3. Fire Bomb 4. Hard 5. Te Amo
Loud era: 1. Only Girl 2. What's My Name 3. S&M / Raining Men (urban) 4. Fading 5. Cheers
Talk that Talk era: 1. We Found Love / Talk That Talk (urban) 2. Drunk on Love / Cockiness (urban) 3. Where Have You Been / Birthday Cake remix (urban) 4. Roc Me Out (all) 5. Farewell (pop)
Unapologetic era: 1. Diamonds (all) 2. Stay / Pour It Up (urban) 3. Jump / Loveeeeee Song (urban) 4. Nobody's Business (all) 5. Lost in Paradise / Numb (urban)

It would make sense if we were talking about any other artist, but it's Rih. I mean, she performed at the damn season finale of SNL and 3 months later and no album

The missed smashes for the last four albums were "Te Amo", "Fading", "Watch N Learn", and "Jump". :)

Am I the only one confused at this sudden influx of love for Te Amo? Not that I thought people disliked it, but it was always Fire Bomb that fans bemoaned as the one that got away. (Personally I think Fire Bomb's best chances were as a third or fourth single following previous successful ones...would have been too controversial as a lead, IMO.)
Te Amo was cute, but I don't know how many people would have really been here for the lezbehonest theme. It wasn't like IKAG which was just a flirtatious indulgence of straight-male threesome fantasies. Te Amo was some legit relationship type angst that I don't know if the public would have been ready to handle at the time.

Lmao Jump we used to listen to in this bootcamp class I did back in 2013. I just put it on and wanted to do burpees bc it took me right back to that short black woman screaming at me to go faster.

It had that Stargate production at the time that if it had been properly promoted, it would've done something other charting on the low end of the Hot 100. What I think is that the topic was less obvious than IKAG, like @antigonerising said.

Oh, the production was on point, just the subject matter that I think would have been its biggest hurdle. But who knows, maybe I'm selling the 2009/2010 general public short and they would have been all for it.

Jump was the smash of the album. Her biggest lost hit by far, which is saying something.

I'll never forget Ryan Seacrest announcing that she'll be performing "Te Amo" next week on an American Idol results show....and then we get "Rockstar 101" the next week. Such a let down.

Rockstar 101 as a single was a huge WTF! moment for me. Especially when you have an album as good as Rated R and THAT'S what you go with?!

Fortunately for me, Jump is some sort of radio single in my country. So I'm hearing it all summer in 2013. It sounds fantastic in radio, such a shame she didn't release it in US. Then again, Blurred Lines is there, so....

The less the Rated R period is used as a reference in any way aside from select visuals for future decisions, the better. No. Sure half of RR was throwaway, but the other half was brilliant. Cold Case Love remains hot on the heels of We Found Love as the single best song of her career. So I'd very much like it to be a reference in future musical decisions.

The Acclaimed Music site had its annual update. Rihanna is ranked No. 464 on the artists list.
She has no albums ranked in the top 3,000 (or bubbling under).
These are her songs rankings (top 6,000):
243. Umbrella 3,588. SOS 4,724. Only Girl (In the World) 5,429. Love the Way You Lie 1,007. We Found Love 3,632. Take Care
Songs- Bubbling Under Don't Stop the Music Live Your Life Disturbia Rude Boy Run This Town What's My Name?

That, along with Stupid In Love, is what should be stayed away from. They're in the same bottom barrel category as California King Bed. And once you cut out those and the potential singles, what you're left with is now-dated dubstep licks that just wouldn't work.

7 months later and still having writing camps. Crazy!
Di Genius, Dre Skull, Supa Dups and Kranium are all dancehall/reggae writing & production teams. There's her new direction.
She was also in the studio with London On Da Track. Young Thug producer.
