I think she's going to be critically celebrated for such a risky change in sound, and I think it's awesome that she's doing it. I'm just...not feeling it at all (based on the limited sample). I think so too, regarding the critics. But IMO the flaws in her voice are more apparent in these types of songs. Her voice is very grating. It sounds interesting sonically, but vocally...my GOD! It's like 2005 Rihanna has come back. That second snippet is atrocious, and this is the same problem I have with "FourFiveSeconds". This exactly what I thought of when I heard the clips...2005 Rihanna.

Rihanna has always delivered struggle vocals. This is not news to me, and those clips have far more power than she ever had as a 17 year old Bajan goat.
Both of those snippets sound good, and even though FourFive Seconds isn't my cup of tea at all, I'm really interested in the direction she's going this album.

I hear the straining in FFS, but I don't hear it in the Higher snippet. Obviously that's what they're going for though because there's no way no one would have noticed it.
I'm not overly excited by the Oxygen snippet, but I'd like to assume the next single won't be as simple and quite frankly boring as FFS. I'm ready!

This seems like an unpopular opinion here, but I think that Rihanna's recent vocals are the best in her career.
I think that this is just a case of pulse being very pop/dance leaning, and having a preference towards those genre's normal vocal aesthetic. Or maybe I'm just crazy and her vocals really do stink.
I will say that I usually prefer distinct voices over technical voices, so that may be why I love her recent vocals so much.

I think she had her best vocals on Unapologetic tbh. The ballads were good, and "What Now" was excellent!

I like that Rihanna is taking a different direction from her usual urban and dance sound.

Is FourFiveSeconds in that new timeless group though? I understand what she's saying but I pray we get some bops

She can still make timeless music without taking herself serious. "We Found Love", "Pon de Replay", "Umbrella", "Only Girl" are all timeless bops.

So lots of people are hype for this American Oxygen song.
I don't think FourFiveSeconds is done yet so I'm hoping they hold off another couple weeks and she perform 45s at iHeart.

Why did she decide to let Kanye executive produce this record? Ugh I wish he would just go away

I was over 45S the moment I first heard it, so I hope she moves on to another single quickly. "Timeless" could have a lot of meanings. Judging by 45S, it means "timeless crap". I'm not thrilled with Kanye being the executive producer either.

She can still make timeless music without taking herself serious. "We Found Love", "Pon de Replay", "Umbrella", "Only Girl" are all timeless bops. Sounds like she is just tired of her own music, which actually isn't surprising for a few reasons. She wouldn't be the first person to get burned out on her hits. Her sound morphs with each album; Rihanna today is probably just not into the super-poppy stuff she did early in her career. Some (several?) of her songs were handed to her or came from a writing camp, so she may never have experienced a real 'connection' to them or felt like they were written just for her. And she might also be looking back at her discography and thinking 'ugh, I have so much filler' - hence the emphasis on creating not just timeless songs, but a timeless album. I don't fully agree with her either, though. She already has two 'signature' albums, IMO (GGGB and Rated R) and the best tracks from those stand the test of time. In fact most of her albums are usually pretty solid from start to finish. She has a good body of work. But I can't fault her if most of it simply does not resonate with her anymore. With that said, she didn't say exactly which songs she's tired of, and I would like to think WFL isn't one of them. I know she rarely or never performs PDR anymore though, and she may well be sick to death of Umbrella by now as well. Not sure where OG would fall in this.

I'm not thrilled with Kanye being the executive producer either. Yeah. I took "timeless" to mean songs that aren't hopping on current trends, which wouldn't be a bad thing except the lead single fits the description while remaining totally bland and the exec producer is more interested in making pretentious statements than catchy pop songs. It's respectable that Rihanna realizes she's at a point in her career where she can take more risks, but she shouldn't lose sight of the musical attributes that lifted her to superstardom either. I just don't see Kanye being the right person to help her find the balance.
