Yeah with features the story changes. That said Starstrukk and If We Ever Meet Again did well in several countries and she wasn't that big back then. Who You Love on the other hand is a complete flop.

Who You Love on the other hand is a complete flop. it's a John Mayer song at the end of the day, not a Katy song. Even still, I love it, and I hear it all the time at work and my coworkers like it too. There was a video yes, but was there "Katy promotion"?? No. It's on John's album.

this did about as well as a kelly clarkson single on the charts. it's all about how you look at it. katy can't keep having #1 after #1, especially with songs that aren't as instant or radio friendly. releasing unconditionally wasn't about numbers or sales, it was something she fought for because of how much she loves the song. "dark horse" will dominate and people will forget about this. no biggie. Apparently Katy believed Unconditionally would be a huge hit. She was insistent over this single over the labels wishes. From Dark Horse's release as a promo single it was obvious how huge it was going to be. Pushing a third single (while Roar was still charting) also hurt Unconditionally. Bottom line is this didn't hurt katy but I hope she listens to her label about what's going to be a hit. They seem to come to decisions very thoughtfully. Instead of a gut feeling or a close friends opinion in the case of unconditionally. Objective data don't lie.

I'm sure she's aware her momentum Is insane . Maybe she knew she could release one her favorite songs that isn't too radio friendly , have it perform modestly. And then just pick up where she left off with smashing with dark horse

I don't think that's the case though. The label always seems so keen on getting her singles to #1 and setting records. I can't see them intentionally releasing an underperformer. Especially when this era has the potential to match her 5 #1s record.
It's clear that they were trying to mirror the singles from TD though.
Roar-California Gurls: Upbeat, breazy Teenage Dream-Unconditionally: Romantic love ET-Dark Horse: Rapper, hot beat
I'm sure they'll go with: Last Friday Night-This Is How We Do soon enough

But this album doesn't quite have a Firework/inspirational anthem.

Single #3 was Firework though, not ET I know that.... But this album doesn't quite have a Firework/inspirational anthem. I believe that was Roar. There are no apples to apples matches. But yes I'm sure the label gently resisted and katy insisted so they were like, "sure. Let's see where this goes". The article pre dark horse on billboard was telling. Mostly due to timing. In less than a week DH exploded on iTunes and the radio.

Got it :) I guess if they were to recreate TD singles with PRISM, they would be Walking on Air Love Me Roar Dark Horse International Smile Unconditionally of course, that doesn't make any sense, it's just a matter of matching. An era like this would probably flop though lol

An era like this would probably flop though lol How about something more like this? "Roar"/"California Gurls" - Hot lead single "Unconditionally"/"Teenage Dream" - sweet romantic single "Dark Horse"/"Firework" - Where the winter single becomes the BIGGEST song on the albumSo I'm thinking: "This Is How We Do"/"E.T." - Something hot, especially for Spring Break. "International Smile"/"Last Friday Night" - Hot summer-like singles. IS has that Santa Monica boardwalk-kind of sound that's perfect for the summer. You saw how "I Need Your Love" performed. Same with "Last Friday Night" and other songs of the like. (I think I'd laugh if this went up against Ellie's "Goodness Gracious".) "Love Me"/"The One That Got Away" - Something with a higher tempo than the rest. Sure, "Unconditionally" could have worked, but it was completely squashed by Katy's meat sandwich singles.

Yeah, this could work too, it makes more sense as an era. But we're using different criteria here, I was just trying to match similarly-sounding songs, not how they performed and stuff. Here's hoping Birthday is the next single though

When I hear this now I feel like I'm listening to a Christmas carol. This song reminds me of Christmas; buried in the month of December.

This song's losses have become minimal. Anyone think there's a chance for a re-release after Dark Horse peaks (which is admittedly still a ways away)?
