I think this week was his best shot to crack Mediabase's Top 40, but that doesn't look likely now. He's sitting at #42, and I think that only the Eli Young Band are going recurrent tonight. FGL still have another week, as does Darius Rucker I think. ***Eli Young Band is no longer on the chart as of the afternoon update!!!!*** This is very strange. I don't know why Mediabase would take it off. This isn't one of those songs like "We Were Us," "Sunny and 75," and "Carolina" that were already falling at the end of 2013 and were affected by the weeks at the end of the year when everything lost the bullet. This was still being promoted the first week of the new year and clearly would have had a bullet regardless of the Christmas music situation.

Could be a change of recurrent rules perhaps? I'm not sure how vocal Mediabase is with recurrent rules. I know Billboard makes a statement whenever the rule changes.

All Access has just updated their chart for Sunday evening and Eli was removed!!! George is #41 this week for Mediabase but we shall see if Eli is back on the list tomorrow morning. As of right now, the Mediabase top 30 page Churchchoir is referring to has not done its evening update yet, but will here shortly!! Yes, it may be a mistake on Mediabase's part but either way this does not help Strait with spins for countdown as he is not in top 40 yet.

Haven't been following charts much recently with disappointments like this, FYA, Sober, etc. Next week though, best case scenario 39, worst 42 among realistic possibilities. Most likely, it should get countdown spins (finally!). Radio should drop off. That brings it to 40. You always have the fear of the two songs behind it jumping over to negate that and lose a spot, but it could also pass Sheryl Crow. Dustin Lynch could go recurrent on BB but I don't think he can on MB. Same with WATT. So basically, stay ahead of the two songs and it's good to go for countdown spins. Is that right? Radio should be recurrent for sure, right? I hate MB recurrent rules. This is doing pretty well on BB and is poised to make 2 more gains next week there, but unfortunately countdown spins are holding it back quite a bit.

Unless some songs in the 30's that have been struggling finally start falling and fall below George this week, he won't move up any automatically because no songs will be sent recurrent on Sunday. "Radio," "Wasting All These Tears," and "Stay" just had their first official drop week. I don't really see the countdown spins as some magical saving grace for this song, though. Once it gets those spins, then what? Suddenly, all the program directors will see a huge gain for one day and start adding/converting? It's possible...I remember "Whatever She's Got" was one of those songs that hit the top 40 and blasted its way into the top 10 from there, but this is a George Strait single we're talking about. I think the exposure he'd gain from the countdown shows would be to an audience that wouldn't care much for his music anyway. All the people who would like this song have probably already heard it. Regardless of whether the countdown spins do help the song, I'm sure this will collect them in the next few weeks and I don't think this is done, but I also don't think this is going to do more than struggle into the top 30. I agree that it would be great to hear this more on the radio, but I just realistically don't think it's going to happen with how congested the charts are already with country-pop, country-hip hop, bro country, and all these other new styles of music. I just don't think that programmers are going to try to make a whole lot more room on the charts for a traditional artist who has already had a long successful career when there are so many new artists and so many radio stations committed to helping break newcomers lately.

#39 on Country Airplay - breaks the top 40 here but not on Hot Country Songs where it stands at #46.

#39 on Country Airplay - breaks the top 40 here but not on Hot Country Songs where it stands at #46. The mongrel chart doesn't exist in my world. Since the changes I stopped paying any attention at all to where songs peak on that mess of a chart. I refuse to accept any future historical significance it has in country music. That said, still happy to see this bouncing around on the chart. Not sure it's going anywhere, but I still have hope… Oh, and off topic but I saw three of George Strait's band members last night while at dinner (in Austin). There's this place that does live music and I just randomly happened to be there that night. Saw Rick McRae, Tarry Hale, and the third was Joe Manuel I think but not sure. Didn't realize they didn't have any shows scheduled this weekend. edit: just did a search and actually the person I thought was Joe Manuel was Tony Harrison, a local singer of Texas swing.

Please MCA take out an ad in this weeks magazine. What could it hurt to actually push this single??

^How do we know MCA isn't pushing this single and radio isn't just not catching on? An ad in Country Aircheck or BCU might not always be that effective of a promotion strategy.

Maybe it's the fact that MCA hasn't really had to go all out to promote one of George's singles in forever. Heck they probably don't remember when they had to worry about that. Now just about every single gets promoted in some form or fashion/big or small. I'm sure MCA has done some work in letting radio know about "I Got A Car"'s push up the charts. I am starting to believe that MCA or even George are not at the live or die about chart success with this song as many of us are. They might be at a looking back at George's career state of mind. He has that 5 album deal, so perhaps they are putting focus on where his career will end in terms of the direction he and the label takes with those records. I think that both sides are right. MCA is of course doing their fair sure of promotion for this song, but maybe they aren't going full speed ahead like some think they should because of the quality of the song.

All labels promote their songs. It's a pretty popular thing to just blame a record label when one of your favorites doesn't do well (I'm guilty of that as well), but I'm pretty sure they want all of their releases to do well. The MCA promotion team is out there trying to get radio to play this song, just as they are doing with the latest singles from David Nail and Kip Moore. It's just not happening, plain and simple.
George is the King of country music, but he's more than 60 years old and they aren't going to keep playing him forever. It took a massive effort to get GIAWGT to #1 on Mediabase as his "60th #1", but I am sure that cost a lot of money. They probably had to do a lot of back room deals to get it done...lots of concert tickets, meet and greets, etc. given out...spins taken away from other MCA or UMG artists for a brief period of time, and given to GIAWGT instead. Consistent "over-the-top" pushes can be pretty annoying to radio personnel. I know Phyllis Stark has done a few articles about radio's take on the big pushes that the record companies sometimes orchestrate. If the label is willing to give enough whatever-it-is-that-they-give, then the radio folks probably just shrug it off (the annoying feeling they have after bowing to labels' demands)...but there's only so much labels can do. It's illegal to buy airplay, of course. And if enough radio stations simply aren't playing a song, what do you do? Labels can't just 'bully' every single song up the chart. Sure, the promotional reps can keep calling stations and say "hey, please play IGAC"...but those same radio stations are getting those same phone calls from every other label as well.
It's hard to swallow and I hate it, but this song is floundering very badly. I can't see the future, but it sure looks like George is getting phased out by mainstream radio. "I Got A Car" is a great song and it's got the right recipe to become a hit (I would say it "deserves" to be a hit, but anyone can say that), but it's also the type of music that country radio is moving away from. George is the last, or one of the last, of a dying breed, unfortunately. Too much of today's country music is all about trucks and backroads and beer and hot girls and partying...the people who enjoy that kind of music have gotten slowly worked into the genre over the last several years, and now those folks make up a huge chunk of the demographic that country radio plays to. And radio itself has changed as well. All the little stations have been getting bought up. Radio today is more about entertaining people during their drive to and from work...it's not the way it used to be, where people used to sit around at home, tuning in to hear the songs they loved on a quiet Saturday night. Instead, all the bean-counters at Clear Channel and Cumulus have decided that people want to sing along to good time music while they're stuck in a traffic jam at 5pm on Friday. Not that there's anything wrong with "good time" country music, but there's just so much of it nowadays, and playlists are severely lacking when it comes to songs with substance and depth.
That old school country stuff? It belongs on a jukebox at the local bar. Or you could just find it online if you wanted to...that's what the bean-counters and the gate-keepers at country radio will say. They can't play that stuff, because they need to 'move the genre forward' and make sure they've got a lot of "woo hoo! It's the weekend" and party-type songs for the drive home, so that they keep their listeners entertained. Somewhere along the line, entertainment became radio's top priority. Now obviously country singers are entertainers too, but that never used to be the main priority for radio, and it shouldn't be today, either.
I don't know what it will take for the format to become more diverse, to play female artists, to welcome back traditionalists, to play newcomers who aren't "radio-friendly" like Brandy Clark, Kacey Musgraves, Wade Bowen, Jamey Johnson, etc. Pretty bleak post, I know. But when radio won't play a song like "I Got A Car", this is how I feel. I feel like I can understand why it's not getting the airplay that so many of George's past hits always got, but that's where it hurts--because I hate all the likely reasons why this isn't getting airplay.
Maybe I'm feeling this way because of how KMLE in Phoenix is. I was just out driving around, and every Friday and Saturday night now they play this stupid segment of music in which every single song is sped up and remixed by Dee Jay Silver. It drives me insane. I don't know how long this remix show lasts (if they play one song, that's long enough), but I'm sure it's several hours. I scanned through the stations a few times tonight and I heard Parmalee's "Musta Had A Good Time", Gloriana's "Wild At Heart", Miranda's "Mama's Broken Heart", Jason's "Night Train", etc...all remixed and sped up so that you could barely recognized them.

Looking at the chart this morning IGAC is still at #41 on the chart. If MB doesn't send anything recurrent this week, then George will spend a 4th week at 41. But MB sent Eli Young Band recurrent last week on their second drop week. If they do the same to Darius Rucker this week, then that would put George at #40 and he would pick up the countdown spins and maybe car will start taking off. However if they don't take Radio off this week, then as long it don't struggle this week, there will be 3 songs going recurrent and that will surely put car on the chart. I predict car will be in the MB top 40 by next weekend.

It's come to our hoping that the charts break their own recurrent rules in order to get George into the top 40 (and onto Bob Kingsley's show, which might help a lot, although maybe nothing is going to give us what we want). But I agree with you -- I don't see anything going recurrent unless Darius does us a favor. Thanks, Darius. We loved (and requested) Wagon Wheel and now you owe us one, so go recurrent now. I didn't think Sheryl Crow's song would rally and regain its bullet, but what do I know?
I don't think George can complain much if radio shuns him now. We can complain, sure, but George was the recipient of superior treatment at country radio, and it lasted for 30+ years. Not that George is a whiny guy in the first place, but even if he were, he's come out way ahead on any fair calculation of his treatment at country radio over a long period. They promoted his previous "#1 song" so they do still know how to do it, they haven't forgotten it, they're just not in a great position to get radio to listen to them right now. I was one of the people arguing that a ridiculous promotion of GIAWGT would hurt his future songs, but I take no pleasure in that.
And I have a solution for JHomes' Phoenix station. Play all the bro country, play all the good-time stuff -- you can have all day Friday for it. Dawn to midnight. All bro, all the time -- speed 'em up, don't play a single song all day that isn't autotuned -- knock yourself out.
Just give us the rest of the week. You can keep Friday. I might even tune in, just to hear what a speeded-up good-time version of Whiskey Lullaby might sound like. Heck, I'll move to Phoenix to hear that.

Buffalo's weather is too warm for me. Here in Ohio we are preparing for -16 degrees tomorrow night (though maybe we'll get a reprieve at the end). Y'all have that southern climate created by the balmy winds off Lake Erie, and I prefer an actual winter. The shrine does sound cool, though. Maybe I'll have to make a pilgrimage. (You know that I lived in Buffalo for 6 years, right? But that was before George Strait was played on the radio.)

^ Thank you.
I think this song has a great shot at the top 30 now, but nothing about the other songs on the chart is going to matter if this one doesn't pick up audience every week. Still, it will be nice timing if 5 or 6 songs are ready to leave the chart -- we don't have today's (Thursday's update) numbers but there are quite a few candidates for recurrency. It takes more than 7 million impressions to make the BB top 30 now, but if a bunch of ancient songs leave, that can easily drop to 5 mill. And George can get to 5 mill with some modest gains.
Top 20 would be good enough to please me at this point. My hopes for a #9 or 10 peak have melted away, but I haven't yet resigned myself to something lukewarm like a #26 peak. That would still disappoint me in a big way. But if he doubles his audience total, he'll get into the top 30 and, if that's as far as he can get, I'll find a way to stop whining about the poor chart peak. Maybe #26 is as much as I should be hoping for.

Two songs are set to go recurrent this week (Darius & FGL), and even though he probably can't hold off Tim for the 2nd spot, he has an excellent chance to pass Austin Webb and make it in anyways. Honestly, I'm surprised he hasn't already passed Webb, but if the last 3 days of the week resemble the first 4 at all, he should jump him comfortably. After that, top 30 of BB becomes pretty likely, just like Zazie pointed out. I refuse to give up on this song and its prospects of being a hit, but at this point that might just be denial.

It's just sad that we have now seen the day where George Strait has to rely on recurrents to climb the chart like he's a brand new artist.

She was still credited with a bullet on the 1/21 chart though, so she'll probably get one last week. Either way, there's going to be some much needed house cleaning the next two weeks. Maybe the 35-60 section of the chart will finally be able to get some momentum (not just George, I'd like to see Charlie Worsham, Sheryl Crow, & Gary Allan pick up some steam as well)

IGAC will finally get the CT40 spins next weekend as it will be either 39 or 40 on chart. Its sitting at 42 now but after "Stay" and "Radio" go recurrent tonight, that will put it at 40 and possibly higher if Cassidee Pope joins the recurrents.

This was definitely a best case scenario week for George. Not only did is he going to finally crack the MB T40 and pick up countdown spins, but he actually went out and grabbed the spot with his best week yet (throwing out the post-holiday inflated week) with a .8 mil gain and up nearly 100 spins. It's not just the charts that are undergoing a house cleaning, radio playlists will be doing the same thing - hopefully this is a sign that George will be in line to pick up some of the vacated spins.

I only had George gaining 500k on Mediabase for the week, although I aligned the 7-day tracking period with the Billboard week. I'm thinking a gain of only 400-500k on Billboard tonight, maybe not even quite that much, because IGAC's translation factor from MB audience to BB audience hasn't been that great. I do have it moving up to #36, but with a total still below 4 million. But yes, the silver lining will be the countdown spins next weekend on both Kix Brooks' ACC and Bob's CT40.

#36 is one better than where Drinkin' Man peaked.

Yeah, the Sunday to Sunday gain was .8 (5.279 to a 6.061). It had a bad update this morning, so the Monday to Monday gain wasn't nearly as big (5.437 to a 5.940)

Up to 36, with a disappointing Billboard gain of 123k. That's worse than we were all expecting, I'm sure. Songs with the word "car" in the title aren't translating well to Billboard here in 2014. Should change the title to I Got A Bus.
Still, the countdown spins will finally start happening and, as long as the song doesn't collapse, it should get several weeks in which it gets some exposure to a new (countdown) audience, with the possibility of requests and adds and miracles like that. Top 30 remains far away, and with Chris Young, Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, and other relatively new releases coming along, there's no time to wait. If there's a window, it's in the next week or two.
An audience of 4.5 million or more on next week's BB chart would be nice.
