I could see a run similar to "Stay" or "When I Was Your Man."

#3 on iTunes. This could become his biggest hit. Currently, "Ordinary People" and "Green Light" are tied for his biggest Hot 100 hit (#24 peak).

The audience has spoken, pop needs to jump on this. I don't think it's rise is comparable to "Love On Top," that had the huge buzzworthy moment of Beyonce revealing her pregnancy during the performance. All John Legend did was sit at a piano and sing.
The song speaks for itself, memaws and white girl Becky's are creaming their panties whenever this comes on. And with Valentine's Day coming up? Smash. They also need to put this on some memaw shows like Grey's Anatomy ASAP.

Haha! My bad. They better work it into some other shows. Let's get some Castle, Vampire Diaries or Pretty Little Liars exposure!

This is about to blow up too?
I see boredom is the new black at radio this season.

Boredom is in the eyes of the beholder. It's a song simply sung with no opening legs wide, twerking or gimmicks--just a man and his piano. Sometimes that's just refreshing. They need to promote this one for Valentine's Day & take advantage of the boost he's gotten.

The song is simple, it certainly isn't boring. It has a beatiful melody and the vocal is on point. I can see people finding the lyrics sappy, but I don't, he sells the song for me.

I've liked a few John Legend numbers, but it's boring to me too. This is still funny to me for so many reasons. Probably because it's so abrupt coming from you.

Valentine's Day Hallmark appeal. I'm all for him getting his first major crossover hit and an R&B song by an R&B act blowing up, even though I'm not crazy about the song itself.

I don't like radio and grammies making up for past mistakes by giving average songs airplay. I think they should make sure not to miss the boat the next time around.

I was going to say that 'Green Light' was his first crossover, but it really didn't do THAT well, did it? I'm surprised too, because I distinctly remember hearing it all the time back in '08.

I agree, this isn't even close to being his best song. But it's one of the strongest singles he's ever released.
He and his record label have consistently throughout his career made some of the most boneheaded single choices I've ever seen. Which is unfortunate, because he has consistently made good music.

I'm genuinely wondering because the only difference I can see between "All of Me" and something like "Someone Like You" or Birdy's "Skinny Love" is that John Legend is an R&B act while Adele/Birdy are not, and to me those terms seem to be just extended to the songs in question. I personally feel piano-and-voice ballads are genre-neutral (I'd call them pop if I had to pick a genre just because pop is non-specific/a general catch-all), but I may be missing something.

Yeah, to be honest nothing about the vocals really strike me as definitively R&B. They're a bit more complex than your typical Pop song, but I wouldn't say that makes it R&B by default. Not that that's what the implication is here-- I'm just in the same boat as Slizzard in that I'm not sure what the qualifications for an R&B vocal are.
My initial reaction to this was that it reminded me of ADELE.

Although there's nothing genre-specific about a piano-ballad itself, whereas something like steel guitars automatically render a song a country song, the vocalist's approach to the song can definitely change that. "All Of Me" could be recorded by three different artists, and, in one case be a pop song, in another be an R&B song, and in another be a country song.
A lot of John's ballads are very inspired by Stevie Wonder (he's always drawn those comparisons), and Stevie Wonder's piano ballads were always considered R&B. I think being a black act has a lot to do with the song being considered R&B, although there are definitely black acts like Rihanna who are not really considered R&B vocalists. She just doesn't have that gospel, soul, blues influence in her voice.

If Carrie Underwood tackled this for example, it would probably he straight up country. I guess I'm just not hearing that here though. It sounds like a standard delivery to me, not that that's a criticism. But yeah, RE: Rihanna, the closest things she's got to this would be 'Stay', but that sounded like a pop ballad to me without question. This isn't as easy to label for me.

I mean, this is definitely an adult contemporary/easy listening/(whatever you want to call light pop) song as well. I don't think it so much has to be one or the other, but John is considered an R&B vocalist, so that's definitely why many will consider this R&B. My original comment about this being an R&B song by an R&B artist wasn't so much to put this in a box as an R&B song, but to differentiate it from someone like Rihanna who is often considered an R&B act (and won a Grammy for Contemporary R&B Album), while many of her recent hits at pop radio were definitely not R&B songs. "Stay" was a piano ballad by a black vocalist, but it was not considered R&B. I'd say that's because Rihanna's voice isn't really (well, at all) considered to be soulful. So pair Rihanna with a piano ballad, and it's considered a pop song.

Ok yeah, I can follow that. I don't consider ADELE to be R&B for example, but she has a very soulful voice herself.
It's interesting (to me) how different aspects of a song can totally change the genre though. Like, looking at Taylor's 'I Knew You Were Trouble', that's a pop song even with her forced twang intact. But then this song isn't so easy because of its composition, which is why I asked the R&B question.
So yeah, I agree that the assessment is fair, just maybe not absolute.

I find this similar in identifying Alicia Keys "If I Ain't Got You" as a R&B song. It doesn't quite follow the same as other R&B songs as just was said, it could be sung by several artists and very well be classify as a Pop song or country yet the vocals fall under it despite the strip down production. The usage of a real instrument gives it an universal appeal but his vocal style labels the song as R&B, imo

This is more like the surprise hit of 2014. In a way that's similar to "The A Team".
