not really. the only winner that actually did a pop album was Kelly Clarkson. Both Ruben Studdard and Fantasia did r&b albums for their first release.
from what i've seen Clive Davis is staying largely hands off this project, letting the people at RCA Label Group (that includes the country labels) handle it, maybe because he realizes country music isn't his forte, although Carrie is either signed to Arista or J, not sure which. *that* part of the deal is pretty much forced though so she couldn't be signed to one of the Nashville labels, b/c they're under a different umbrella from RCA/J/Arista that is run by Clive Davis and is the one that has the deal to sign the American Idols.
if they have any brains, they'll have her go pretty much totally country, with a ballad or two that might cross over to AC in a pinch. it's a huge b*tch for AI alumni to get respect in the mainstream music industry like pop and ESPECIALLY rock (so Bo has a hard road ahead of him), whereas country music doesn't have such a stupid obsession with credibility if the music is there and the artist supports the genre; see also Josh Gracin. and since Carrie won I bet she has more label support.

Carrie is a awesome talent. I think she'll do better in the pop format, but I hope she makes a hit in country, too.

I heard Blair Garner mention on his 'After Midnite' show a couple of nights ago that her CD would include her version of what for my money is THE best country single done by a female in the past fifteen years, Martina McBride's stupendous 'Independence Day'. Ms. Underwood can sing, but I don't know if she should be tackling a song which was flawless the first time around. I've heard that even some of Martina's fans think that Carrie's version of "Independence Day" is better than Martina's recorded (CD) version of the song. No doubt however that Martina is a better singer now than she was in 1993, when the song was originally recorded for her CD. I assume that it's mostly the newer, younger generation of fans who feel that way about Martina's "Independence Day" since the song is over 10 years old now.

I think Carrie's version would be much better if it had better production. It was so cheap. I think her vocals (as always) were great. I think Carrie's voice is compared to Martina's 1993 version is better, but I prefer when Martina does it now, live.

It appears that Carrie's song is doing much better on R&R than it is on Billboard. The main stations that are giving it a lot of play are not part of the BB panel.
On Monday, her MB audience was 0.887 while her BB audience numbers were only at 0.328. I'm not sure where she's getting her gains this week, but I know at least one of the added stations this week is also not part of the BB panel.

No doubt however that Martina is a better singer now than she was in 1993, when the song was originally recorded for her CD. It's a bit off topic, but I will point out that there is plenty of doubt about this. I think she's a far worse singer now than she was then. She's lost her balance entirely and spends entire songs screaming and over-emoting. There's not much subtlety of interpretation in her recent work. No doubt you'll disagree, but I can assure you there is plenty of doubt about Martina nowadays. I look forward to hearing Carrie's version of ID, but her work's cut out for her.

Does the country world like her better than the Nashville Star? Anybody have prelim sales number for her single?

The "Inside Your Heaven" single debuts at #1 on the Hot Country Singles Sales chart. No word on its Hot 100 debut.

It probably didn't have enough street date sales to debut on Hot 100.
It debuts #5 on the Single Sales Charts based on street date violations.

early street violations. It probably only sold a few thousand. I was watching Itunes this week though. It started out tuesday about 18 or so, next time I checked, it was 3, and it's been #1 since Wed morning. I'm willing to bet we could see 80k or better on digital, a new record. Wonder if we'll see it sell more digital than physical singles tho? The "Inside Your Heaven" single debuts at #1 on the Hot Country Singles Sales chart. No word on its Hot 100 debut.

actually, with the way physical single sales are going, more like a few hundred most likely. out of the very few singles i've seen out, even fewer are country, so I think this is likely.
the physical sales are probably pretty low, probably b/c Independence Day is already on the American Idol 4 album. I think it'll probably hinge on the downloads and Mariah Carey's airplay to see who gets #1 on the Hot 100.

quick note: she did debut at #1 on both hot 100 and pop 100, but only #4 on digital sales, so retail sales is where the meat was!

Carrie Underwood Debut Single Breaks Chart History American Idol 4 winner Carrie Underwood’s “Inside Your Heaven” (19 Recordings/Arista Records) has debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The single is the best selling song in the nation and also debuts at #1 on three additional Billboard charts, including the Pop 100, the Singles Sales chart and the Country Singles sales charts. With first week sales of nearly 170,000, the song now ranks as the best selling song of 2005 year to date.
Underwood also breaks Billboard chart history as the first country music artist ever to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. Underwood’s “Inside Your Heaven” also becomes the first song from a country artist to go to #1 on the Hot 100 since Lonestar’s “Amazed” did so in 2000.
“My dreams continue to come true,” said Underwood. “Thanks to the fans for voting me as their IDOL and for wanting to hear -and have- my music!”
Underwood is reviewing songs for her debut country album, due out this Fall, and also rehearsing for the American Idol tour, which will launch July 12 in Sunrise, Florida.

Still not a big fan of this song. I like Carrie's voice but would prefer to hear her sing something country. I still like Martina's ID better.

From CMT.COM newsUnderwood's "Inside Your Heaven" Enters Country Chart -- Barely Erika Jo Outsells Yoakam in First Week Out
By: Craig Shelburne
Thanks to her American Idol win, Carrie Underwood is already a pop star, but do country radio stations care?
Her first single, "Inside Your Heaven," debuts at No. 1 on the all-genre Hot 100 this week, knocking Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, the Black Eyed Peas and 50 Cent each down a notch from last week. The commercial single is No. 1 on the country singles sales chart for the second week, but she arrives on the country airplay chart at a measly No. 59. The chart quits counting at No. 60.
However, there is still time for country radio programmers to make up their minds about the 22-year-old Oklahoma native. Her album won't be released until the fall, but she will participate in the American Idol tour beginning July 12 in Sunrise, Fla. She is certainly courting the country audience, performing at the Grand Ole Opry, the CMA Music Festival and CMT's 100 Greatest Duets concert earlier this month.

CMT.com doesn't tell you that the song went for adds this week, so hopefully it will pick up soon. I know some PDs are already posting it as a Hot Pick on AllAccess.

What did "Bless The Broken Road" peak at, just #50? Well I know it debuted at that, but didn't it just fall off after that?

Yes, her "Bless The Broken Road" maxed out at #50. It managed 161 spins with 2.4 million audience impressions, then died. For what it's worth, Carrie is the 2nd most added on R&R's AC chart this week... www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/Charts/AC_Chart.asp134 plays, 29 stations, 12 adds

Not a fan of this song, but I love her voice and picked her to win Idol from Day 1.
Better material and I may find myself buying her album when it is released this Fall.

I do agree that she could have released a better song--although she had no control. It is doing well on AC but not country. I will most definetly buy the album! And I do love the song, but it isn't what she should have debuted with.

I'm still reserving judgement on Carrie as an artist. I think Erika Joe is much more entertaining and pure country, if you will. I'd like to see the style of Carrie's future songs.
