Celine Dion is a music industry dinosaur. She's been around since 1990.
Hasn't released an English album in 6 years!
Does not really have a single at radio! When was her last legitimate radio hit? 2002?
These numbers should not be a surprise.
The label did not help by suggesting 160k in first week sales.

I'll reiterate what I said when LMBTL (single) came out and the iTunes preview debacle. What were they thinking in using the 30 second intro as the starting point? I know that turned a lot of people off, including me. Five seconds OK, but they could've started with the actual song or the hook and then the second verse. Anyway, "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" - one of my fave Celine album trax - sums it up.

The title track is Celine Dion's single at radio; even the label said it wasn't going to get her on top 40 radio, so why would it waste time trying.

They have some modern, current material yet they have done nothing. I mean, I felt that distributing behind-the-scenes videos through multiple online outlets was nice, but there should have been a music video, more appearances happening throughout this week (and not s**t like Dr. Oz), and more push at radio. Yes, her name is Céline Dion and that alone will prevent most stations from playing her, and the song may have stalled before doing much damage, but we'll never know that for sure. I know I come across as some dumb fan who cannot accept her days are over, and I know she can never reach her peak again - who can? - but I feel this album has so much more potential and I doubt they care enough to do much next year. I'm bitter. Don't talk to me. I'm guessing her team probably thought that simple old school traditional TV marketing would still work, given her demographic appeal. The problem is the sales climate is in the shitter and Celine doesn't appear to have cultivated social media and new technologies like Mariah or Madonna. She has always been the least contemporary of her peers and that's her biggest challenge right now.

Anyone know Eminem's average second week drop, based on his past sales history?

Anyone know Eminem's average second week drop, based on his past sales history? Recovery's 2nd week was 313k.

Yeah I get this and I agree she was away for too long but I thought she'd still sell albums decently and would definitely crack 100k. It surely does not bode well for other veteran acts if they finally decide to release a new album, I'm thinking of Shania Twain or Janet Jackson and the likes.

If Eminem beat Gaga like 405k-395k, that'd be a PR loss for Gaga of course.

Even though there's not a big No. 1 streak to "protect", and since "Applause" - while a solid performer - wasn't a No. 1 contender, no doubt the label wants ARTPop to come out on top. So, if Eminem's album was projected to hold up better than the average, would Interscope do something to give the new release an advantage? Why not.

Kinda feel bad for Celine (just from her being the textbook casualty of ageism, her sound simply not being at all what radio plays now and gets minimal hype anymore). She was A++ list by the late 90s and was basically Mariahs main rival when it came to sales/success. Whitney, Janet, Toni and Madonna were close but not as consistent mega sellers like Celine and Mariah (album after album). Celine was one of the queens of 90s radio. Now, its likely (unless) she gets a Clive Davis type to manage her career and goes the Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Lionel Ritchie route and puts out an album with duets or remakes of standards and its promoted the right way, that's really the only way I could see her having at least some album success. She's still a huge name- just all went downhill in 2003 when she put out that awful cheesy Euro dance version of I Drove All Night. I 'think' that was the first single from that album (forget the name). She was still only 35 yet the song just didt work and began her decline. :( It was a blatant trying too hard to 'switch up her sound' since that 90s power ballad sound was starting its decline, she obviously wouldve sounded foolish going urban or rap lol, so this was her only option really for a 'reinvention'. In other words she was screwed 'cause ANY kind of dance music, esp. Euro dance was the last kind of music pop radio was playing in 2003 (unlike today). It was heavily dominated by rap and hip hop. She simply shouldve just stuck with her classic sound and formula (which worked just a year or so before w/ a Brand New Day that sold pretty well). Her label obviously were afraid, panicked and made a bad, impulsive decision.

As successful as she was, though, Celine didn't have the singles success that the other "divas" had. At mainstream top 40 radio, she had 10 top 10 hits- not bad, but not anywhere close to the others.

I think Celine's team messed the release up a bit.. She should have released the album accompanied by a big promo performance or a bit closer to Holiday shopping season.

Kinda feel bad for Celine (just from her being the textbook casualty of ageism, her sound simply not being at all what radio plays now and gets minimal hype anymore). If you haven't, take a listen to the first three songs on the album if you get a chance - I'm clearly biased in favor of her, but I think they fit fairly well into today's sonic climate.

Hopefully it is upgraded to like 900k at least. No way. It would have trended that way earlier and we would have gotten those numbers yesterday. Maybe it will trend 750k-800k, but 900k is a stretch.

First Celine retired at her peak. Then she went to Vegas. Then she releases French albums. The non Las Vegas American public just moved on from her. They shouldn't have assumed after such a long absence that people would just buy her album without a lot of promo. Still her audience is older people who tend not to buy things when they first come out so she still has time to promote this album especially if she does a lot of shows over the holidays. The label probably want to promote her cd as a good Christmas/Holiday gift.
