Despite going solo in 1977, Patti struggled to have a major solo hit until she released this single in 1983. Written and produced by Cynthia Biggs, Dexter Wansel, Kenneth Gamble, the song was the lead single from her album I'm In Love Again. It not only became her first Top 10 R&B hit as a solo artist but went on to spend 4 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart. Today, it's arguably her signature hit.
Love it. My favorite Patti song.

Perfection!
BTW, at the time this was released, Patti had already left Philly International and was without a record label. :o

It took a while for Patti to get attention on radio, but this is the song that ignited her career as a solo artist. It is a signature song for her, and a number of singers have attempted to cover the song; but they have not been able to match the softness and the power that Patti evinced in this song.

Classic. I'm mad this is her only #1 R&B hit.

I like it.
Onm a side note, it's frustrating that her version of "If You Asked Me To" didn't fare nearly as well as Celine Dion's, when the latter was pretty much a straight cover of Patti's version.

Classic. There's something kind of dreamy about it. Never sleep on Miss Patti!

Yah, this is a true classic. It's a great song and her vocal is so soulful... love its build-up. I much prefer this to "On My Own," since we're talking about her R&B #1's. I consider the latter utterly BORING and I'm surprised it's like her biggest hit overall.
I also like SWV's cover of "If Only You Knew," although it's got nothing on the original. (duh)

(duh) I totally agree with you about On My Own. I think Michael McDonald and Patti did really well on the song, but it is just flat-out boring to me. It is surprising that it is the biggest hit of her career; although it is one of the least memorable songs in her catalog.

Oh my god, love this! This is a childhood favorite of mine, along with "On My Own".
