Billboard Mainstream Top 40 - 2013 Year-end Chart

This week's Billboard charts are dated November 30, 2013. That means Billboard's 2013 chart year has, officially, come to a close. The year started with the issue dated December 1, 2012. For those of you keeping count at home, that means 2013 was a 53 week year...those happen every once in a while. As per usual, Billboard's year-end rankings only count spins for weeks that a song charted in the top 40. New and Active and Recurrent play does not count. Mediabase counts everything, so their year-end standings would look a little different.

My projections for the Billboard rankings have tended to be pretty dead-on these past few years. I think I cracked the code for the artist rankings (as far as how to distribute spins between lead and featured artists), so that list should be a bit more accurate, this year. Keep your eye on the weekly newsletters areyoureadytojump posts every week. Last year, the year-end chart was published in the Monday 12/17/12 newsletter. If history repeats, we should see this year's around the same time frame. For now, here's where it's at...

If anything, Blurred Lines feels more reflective of 2013 than Locked Out of Heaven does. I totally get the argument for it to not be #1 for the year in charts like Mediabase due to not hitting Pop until May, but if I had to choose one or the other, I'd absolutely go with it.

Wow interesting, the data aggregated from Billboard are more Spring/Early Summer 2013 heavy compared to the Mediabase chart. There might be a difference in results, but we'll see once the chart next week comes up.

Just Give Me A Reason did way better than Daylight on the recurrent charts. Locked Out of Heaven stayed strong on recurrent airplay forever and ever and ever. The same went for Swedish House Mafia. I just realized how this chart worked.

One thing also, Blurred Lines was played way less than Can't Hold Us. They're now neck in neck on the recurrent chart with Macklemore in a huge lead on airplay data.

That would be attributed to the spin weighting. From what I could tell of Billboard's artist rankings, last year (and my math seemed to back it up), a song's spins are split amongst the artists involved, with lesser weight going to the featured artists. If a single artist is credited to a song, then he or she would, of course, be given all the spins for it. On tracks with a featured artist, the lead artist gets 75% of the spins and the featured, 25%. For duets, where both artists receive equal billing, the spins are split 50/50.

Justin had three charted songs as the sole credited artist ("Mirrors", "Take Back The Night", "TKO"), one with a featured artist ("Suit And Tie"), and one featured performance ("Holy Grail"). All four of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's charted songs had featured artists. So, consequently, the number you see is only 75% of the spins those songs accrued. I'm not suggesting that these will be the exact rankings, but they should be fairly close. M&RL could, very, well beat JT.

I'm not, exactly, sure what formula Mediabase employs, but I have deduced that they, also, use a similar weighting method to rank artists.

The top 100 songs and top 50 artists for Mainstream Top 40 are here.

I had "Sweater Weather" and "Little Things" swapped around (mathematical error, no doubt). Nailed the rest of the top 100. My artists are right for the top 12, then the list drifts a bit. The biggest discrepancy appears to be that Lana Del Ray and Cedric Gervais seem to have been awarded equal credit for "Summertime Sadness".
