You know what this reminds me of? During one summer, R&R 'contracted' with several of the board members to compile together their book of the decade of songs. Several of us (I was one of them) was tasked with data entry of year-end positions of songs into a spreadsheet and had to e-mail to Ron at R&R. It wasn't terribly hard, but a little time-consuming. But, for our efforts, we did get a free copy of the R&R book and a couple of complimentary R&R issues as well.
Who else was on that project?

Oh man.
I'm surprised at some of the R&B songs that appeared on the year-end CHR/Pop chart, especially Blackstreet's "Don't Leave Me" and Keith Sweat's "Nobody". En Vogue's "Don't Let Go" finished in the Top 10. Appearances from Allure, Az Yet, and New Edition were unexpected as well.
Usher's "You Make Me Wanna" was a multi-format smash. It was more successful on the CHR/Rhythmic chart (10 wks at #1) than CHR/Pop and Urban.
As for the rhythmic format, I've always thought it was Urban-lite before the days of Nelly, Ja Rule, and Eminem. Mariah Carey's "Breakdown" and Janet's "I Get Lonely" were listed as New & Active. Missy Elliott's "Sock It 2 Me" was a bigger song than "The Rain", which missed the Top 10.

Don't Leave Me and I'm Still in Love With You didn't peak very high, but it had longevity. "Nobody" got to #11 and "Don't Let Go" got to #2.
All Cried Out went top 10 as did the Peter Cetera remix of "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."

I started listening to top 40 radio a lot more regularly in the spring of 1997 when my family stopped having cable, so the surprises for me would the ones where I lived in a market where those songs were never played (though I was also aware of lots of the songs that appeared in the 1996 year-end chr/pop chart). Rick Dees' program was on near the local market, but late spring/early summer we moved to Houston where none of the nationally syndicated shows were on the market (though the Hot AC CT20 aired on the respective station there). It wouldn't be until 1999 when I heard American Top 40 as hosted by Casey Kasem. The announcing of the #1s on other formats lead to me eventually going to the site near that fall, where I started visiting the charts regularly.
