As if we needed any reason to further the reality that this reflects its own panel, this week's countdown is all over the place in comparison to the matching overall Mediabase. Examples: "Perfume" pulling a "TKO" and coming in early at #40. And speaking of Justin, "Mirrors" being eight spots lower by comparison. "Let Her Go" being ten (!!) spots lower - both it and "Burn" are almost comparable to last week's position rather than this week's. So too is "Closer", at #25 (#26 last week, falls out of the Top 40 this week). I could go on...but I think you get the idea. (Side note: "Work Work" also dropped out of the Top 40 on the previous week's Mediabase - that's one that I'm thankful wasn't also done in last week's AT40, as that would've set a new record drop-off.) On the other hand, I'm thrilled to see both "Brave" and "Love Me Again" as Breakouts. And, continuing this discussion here since we're up to a new week... My bad; even worse! "We Found Love" was at #16 on the year-end AT40 if I recall correctly. As I recall, it looked to me like AT40 weren't counting December spins on last year's year-end chart. That would have had a significant impact on both songs. Is it me, or does AT40's year-end chart seem to have a varying "survey period" from year to year?

Earlier in the Seacrest era, it seemed like they cut things off by early November (as evidenced by the fact that "newer" songs were placing much lower here than on Mediabase or Billboard's year-end charts). In more recent years, the chart year looked like it was cut off later.

I think AT40 shifted its year-end countdown formula to only include airplay and chart runs during a given year long period, with no or lesser credit for airplay before that period or estimated future chart performance. There may be no perfect way to figure that out, but it seems to me to unfairly penalize songs that were hits in late fall or winter.
Last year's AT40 #1, the Wanted's "Glad You Came", benefited from that as its full chart run was included, and not cut off at either end (it peaked at #1 for two weeks in April 2012.)

This week seems to be something of a catch up week. "Roar" gained a week at #1, here (6 weeks vs. 5 on Mediabase). In exchange, Avicii lost a week (2 here vs. 3 on Mediabase). The #1s are, once again, in sync.
The presence of "Perfume" is a surprise. It's an early debut. On the equivalent Mediabase chart sans recurrent rules, it's only at #56. I guess someone figured we couldn't have a Britney-less week. ;)

Rick has the following songs on his Top 40 chart this week:
33 Perfume Britney Spears 35 Brave Sara Bareilles 37 Love Me Again John Newman 39 Replay Zendaya SS Pompeii Bastille
His chart seems to be a week or two ahead of AT40 and doesn't appear to have that dartboard effect anymore.

I don't know if it's mentioned on the show at all, but Britney Spears is guest-hosting AT40 next week.

I don't know if it's mentioned on the show at all, but Britney Spears is guest-hosting AT40 next week. Probably explains the early debut. She will most likely have a magical big jump next week, so she will gladly announce "My new track is up 6 spots on the countdown, woohoo! Go buy it on iTunes now"

So AT40 uses airplay and how many weeks on the chart to determine the order of the year-end charts?

It seems to me that at least last year they did something like that, or the total plays in a given period, but that's just a guess.

Given today's Mediabase update, barring a major deviation between the AT40 and overall Mediabase panels, I'd say it stands to reason that "Wrecking Ball" will finish out the year on top.
Wonder if this means "Demons" will get screwed a la "I'm Yours"...

Oh, and surprised no one noticed/mentioned it yet but the weeks count for "Story of My Life" and "Heart Attack" are both wrong.

And also, Summertime Sadness is #19 not #18. Ryan talked to both Adam Levine and Fergie who is taking a break and enjoying her child. Congrats to Katy for 2 songs in the top 10. They beefed up the 07/06 segment again with an extra song. The Monster continues to devour everything in its way. Ryan said that Kelly Clarkson is expecting, and she feels that it will be a girl. He also said that Lady Gaga gets her 14th AT40 hit. I still like hearing Can't Hold Us, but I'm really tired of Clarity. I think Britney will only be the second guest host of the year, the other being Pitbull.
