It sounds alright, but it gets a big "so what". These cover albums rarely do huge business and usually wind up having singles that underperform (see Reba, Alan Jackson and LeAnn in the last 10 years). I can see this one doing the same thing.

Thanks for the link!
I think Martina is the best female country singer out there.
I definitely don't agree with the person who said her career is "over" or "in a rut".
This is nice, however I'm not a big fan of old country music.
Heck, I'm not even a fan of new country music!
I do however like a few country females with strong voices like Martina, Trisha Yearwood, and Pam Tillis.

I like her version, based on the clip. I'm a little ashamed to say that I don't think I've heard Lynn Anderson's original before, but Martina's cover does sound like it would fit in with what's being played on the radio today. Cheesy strings, a little too dramatic, very Nashville Sound of the '70's -- good song, strong melodically and rhythmically. Martina's been pretty faithful to it. She's really channeling Lynn with her pronunciation of "jolly" and "melancholy" -- nice job, Martina. Not a scream or a shriek in the whole song.

A wail hardly classifies as "a scream or shreik".

That is my biggest complaint of Martian is her screaming she is the worst at it.

OK, I finally heard it. I have to say, I think it's just medicore. It's just a karoke version of the original. However, I am very eager to hear what she's done with the other covers.

I don't like it. I hope it flops so she can finally get her head on straight.

I'd prefer Martina if she started writing her own material for once, a covers album was such a predictable, cliche move.

I still need convincing that the world needs a whole CD of remakes, no matter how good the songs or the performances are.
I come from the days where unscrupulous promoters put out "sound-alike" records to avoid royalty payments, and artists put out "re-recordings" to get their music out when the record company would not release the originals, so I will admit that I have a built in bias against this kind of release.
The bigger question is why Martina McBride would want to do this at this point in her career. I can't believe she's tired of putting out radio-friendly, pop-sounding, socially-relevent, best-selling CDs.

Appears like, RCA was the force that wanted "Rose Garden" to be the 1st single and also spend the song up for radio to make it sound faster than it really is.
First they push Sara's new CD to Oct. 4 and now this. What's up RCA? The dogs must be getting old. LOL

I thought the same thing. On the other hand, maybe it made sense to Martina/RCA:
1) It's not only a swift return to country, but traditional country at that. 2) It may serve as a palette cleanser (I think we really need one). 3) With a newborn, she may not have had time to listen to demo tapes.
I will always have a spot for Martina on my list of all-time favorites, but I am getting weary of the same tired themes.

It's ok but nothing special. I don't really like the original.

I agree with Billboard's review and prefer Lynn Anderson's version better. I was in high school when Lynn's was a #1 hit, and loved the song, she brought that defiance to the song that Martian doesn't.
Still on the fence about this album and since I grew up with most of these standards, I don't think I will be able to get past the orginials.
I actually afraid to hear her tamper with one of my classic favorites, Satin Sheets, there is NO way Martina is going to be able to give that song with her voice what Jeannie did.
Also since Loretta and Conway are my #1 favorite not happy about her covering one of their songs, she doesn't have the voice, the true grit country voice.

I love LeAnn's cover album, some are better than the originals to me, and I am highly anticipating this album from Martina. I will say that each "Rose Garden" has its own emphasis and that Martina doesn't sing it "sarcastically" like Lynn does and takes the more just standard smiley approach.

I grew up on the many of the orginals I think Iwill prefer them. Jeannie's song, "Satin Sheets" is a classic to me and I cringe with the thought of Martina's poppy voice singing that song. Also Rose Garden read the lyrics, IMO t is not suppposed to be this light, smiley song, I wilL stick with Lynn's version.
When all said is done, this will be an album of Martina singing someone else hits.

What I mean by that, I don't think she will be abe to make them her songs. I feel that way just from the first song, when I listen to her version I think of Lynn's.

I have heard the original version once or twice. And I LOVE this version. What I meant to say is that I've heard Martina's version. I think they are pretty identical, instrument-wise. It sounds the same. Not exactly the same, but very close. And of course the only difference is the voice. I can't decide which voice I like more, Martina's Or Lynn's. Anyways, I think this remake is VERY respectfully done.
