Some stations played this song by Martina yesterday as a test track. Her album is due out in Oct., so it's about right that we are hearing a single now.
This is a cover of the Lynn Anderson song. This pretty much confirms the rumor that the new album is cover songs. I'm looking forward to it. Will post more info and clip when available.

Oh boy can't wait . After all those bland singles from her last album now we have to suffer through a cover album. Is anyone else getting burned out on Martina? I think she has the best voice by far but she needs something fresh in a bad way.

I love Martina but not sure about a album of covers at this time in her career. Espeically if it is a album of signature songs from other artist. This is Lynn Anderson signature song and no matter how great Martina is, it will always be Lynn's signature song and will never be completely a Martina song.

I can't say I'm eager to pick this one up either and im a HUGE Martina fan. Sure it's Lynn's signature song, but without saying who it is that sings it every time the song title is mentioned, it musta been her only real hit and that's not saying much. Ya shes known and been around for a long time, but for how many hit songs???

C'mon you guys, be open minded. Of the covers I have heard Martina do (Stand By Your Man, Harper Vally PTA) I think this is going to be a great album. LeAnn's cover album is excellent. I don't see why this will be any different.

With Faith back with a vengeance, Gretchen headed nowhere but up, and Terri and Sara slowly but surely making progress, has Martina won her final Female Vocalist trophies?

Ya shes known and been around for a long time, but for how many hit songs??? I can't disagree that she's largely known for that 5-week #1 song. People don't listen to her music much any more. Some information about her Billboard history: * 5 #1 songs * 18 top 10 songs * 49 top 40 songs (comparison: Loretta Lynn had 66) * 60 chart appearances overall She's ranked in the top 60 all-time by Joel Whitburn's chart-based formula, with more or less the same point total as Toby Keith (not that he's finished), the Oak Ridge Boys, and John Anderson. Kenny Chesney will pass her total in about 2 years. The most comparable singer I could find was Barbara Mandrell (6 #1 songs, 28 top 10's, almost the same number of chart appearances and Whitburn points, and also known largely for one song, maybe two. Lynn Anderson had top 10 songs 16 years apart, so she wasn't a flash in the pan. I guess she's one of the lesser-known and more-forgotten stars. But there's no doubt she had a solid star-level career. Martina needs a few more years of good production to match Lynn.

I can't say that I'm not disappointed. I think a covers album now in Martina's career (following 3 top 10 misses) could be a huge mistake, especially with Sara and Gretchen doing so well, and Reba, Trisha and Faith all making comebacks over the last year. I'll reserve judgment until I hear the album, but I would have prefered something more like Evolution.

I would really like to hear an album geared toward Wild Angels which is one of my top 20 all time albums. Great Disguise is one of the best written songs I have ever heard.

I don't think Martina will ever be as big as she was in the past. Her days are over. Now its back to Lee Ann (both of them), Faith, Terri, Sarah and Gretchen...

Martina got extremely lucky with how her ballads were received from the last album. They weren't country at all and still did decently. What she should be doing is getting some fiddles and go running back to country like everyone else. A covers album is probably the last thing she needs right now.

Where did the Martina I love go? "God Fearin' Women", "Independence Day", "With A Broken Wing" etc... She stopped making songs like those and made crap like "This One's For The Girls" and songs about dying children. Blah.

I personally think they should scrap the cover album and have Martina take an at least 2 year break from music. She just had the baby and her career is in a rut right now...I really think it's the perfect time for a vacation.
I think a long break to make a great album is what Martina needs right now. She needs to find her edge back. It worked for Faith this time around...

It worked for Faith this time around... Has it worked or is it working?? HUGE difference. Let's not jump the gun here.

I think the fact that "Mississippi Girl" is poised to be the next #1 country song after Toby's run is done.....bombastic album sales or not, is a good indication that Faith's time off and choice of musical direction has worked in her favor. FYI - i did not intend to turn this into a Faith topic...or even compare Faith and Martina...so please spare all negative attitudes.

MARTINA’S ROSE GARDEN BLOOMS AT RADIO The first single from Martina McBride’s new album of country standards, Timeless, is at radio and it’s a wonderful version of the “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden.” RCA sent out promo samples of the single on the original “mini” recording, a 45 RPM red vinyl single, to accentuate Martina’s point that her album project is to celebrate the music she grew up on and performed as a youthful member of the family band, The Shifters.
Martina added a track to the promo single saying, “I made this album for the love of the music and for the experience of singing these songs and creating this album of songs that I love so much and that always felt like home to me.”

Listening to it right now. I LOVE IT!!! It's almost just like the original--sounds more modern though because of the new tools and such. But the music is perfect. And Martina sounds great!! I want the mp3 of this bad!! LOL. I am going to love this album. And the song keeps playing..man this is just like the original. There is plenty of steel and the strings are there just like the original..and Martina definetly does not try to over-do this one with huge vocals--she is just perfect! I think if radio gives this a chance, it will be a huge smash!

Nice! Love it!
Glad they kept it true to the original, but it still sounds different enough.
One of the coolest shows I did was with Lynn Anderson. She's such a nice lady, but she needs to lay off the alcheehol a little.

It's not taking off too fast. I called one of the local stations yesterday to request it and they said they didn't have it and they are already playing "USA Today", "All Jacked Up", and "XXL".

I'll stick to the orginal. I too wish Martina would do an album like Evolution. IMO her best.
I am just thankful she is not covering Tammy's, signature song or Patsy signature song. That would of made me mad.
No matter how great they are, since I know the orginals they will always be their songs, and NEVER IMO will be consider a Martina song, least not in my eyes.

It's most definetly overshadowed by "All Jacked Up" but I'm wondering if they didn't push the release back. I haven't found one industry trade that's reporting "Rose Garden" going for adds.

I like her version, based on the clip. I'm a little ashamed to say that I don't think I've heard Lynn Anderson's original before, but Martina's cover does sound like it would fit in with what's being played on the radio today.
