Surprised Roar is so high. Glad Mirrors made Top 10. Wish Ho Hey and Cruise swapped. I always like to look at the song that went to #1, but charted the lowest - One More Night - Maroon5 - #38, the highest ranked song that didn't go to #1 - Radioactive (#3), and the lowest charting song, to make the year end chart, which I have no idea. Downtown Lady A? I believe the lowest peaking is "Bugatti", which peaked at #33, and I also believe that's the only song on the list not to reach the Top 30.

Also imbondz One More Night didn't hit #1 in the 2013 chart year. Its first week was when it dropped 1-2. The lowest 2013 chart year #1 is "Diamonds" at #27. (in case you care )

And highest non #1 song that peaked previous year end...

"The Monster" didn't peak in the 2013 chart year The one that I quoted didn't specify having peaked 2013. For highest non #1 that peaked in 2013 and didn't make the chart, "Gentleman" would be correct.

I'm thinking a top 5 song not making the year end chart is rare, and probably hasn't happened before.

Songs that are still gaining and moving up the charts at the point of cutoff, naturally would not make the year end chart
Not a big surprise

Haven't tons of Glee songs been in the top 10 and dropped out the week after? or High School Musical songs?

Yeah. Not so rare. At least in the digital era, not even unusual

Ummm. I'm responding to gentleman. It's gotta be rare. Can't ever remember a top 5 song not making year end Off the top of my head, I know One Direction's Live While We're Young and the We Are the World song from a couple years back were top-5 and didn't make it. That's all I can think of from recent years.

I think it is more common than you realize. The three you came up with is not a complete list

That's all I can think of from recent years. So far we've come up with 3 songs that went top 5 but didn't end up in the year end. Yep pretty common In the pre-Soundscan era, when BB used very rudimentary methods of ranking songs at year-end, it was very common. According to my BB Research package of the Year-end charts, at least 100 top 4 songs did not make the year-end countdown, including some pretty famous ones (eg "Yesterday", "I Feel Fine", "Hello Goodbye" by the Beatles, "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds, "Get Off My Cloud" by the Rolling Stones). The short chart life of the mid to late 60s HOT 100 songs also did not help.
Soundscan and BDS greatly improved the accuracy of the charts as well as made the year-end countdown more meaningful (although the December - November timeframe still galls me). I am sure that "Yesterday" would have made the year-end top 10 if Soundscan had existed in 1965.
