Selling records seems to be a pretty good thing to be obcessed about dosen't it. Isn't that what it is all about. And read that article closely and you will see BMG Strategic Marketing is qouted a lot. MARKETING being the key word. Sure, I don't doubt that Elvis is great and all but it took him TONS of albums to do what Garth has done with not even a tenth of the albums. You cannot deny that Garth is the Greatest MALE COUNTRY artist in terms of sales and his total will only rise with each additional release. I know they can add a sale from me to the totals.

Hey! Yall two! Yall are both right (shaniagotchagood and kyhomeg). Garth was officially (RIAA) ahead of Elvis for however long. BUT technically, Elvis has always been ahead as far as sales go. Does that make sense? I tried to make it sound as simple as possible.
So what I don't get is why yall two are going back and forth.

Your words, "Don't doubt Elvis is great", you have got to be kidding right. I am curious how old are you. There is no comparsion with regards to Elvis IMPACT to ALL music and culture and Garth's impact on Country Music. Garth doesn't even come close to Elvis's level. You also cannot compare sales in regards to albums released beween the two. They come from a totally different era, there is no comparsion. BTW the first platnium album in country music didn't even come until the 70' s from Waylon. That tells you right there you can not compare the two in that way. Garth no matter how great he was, is NO WAY at the same level as Elvis and what he meant to music and pop culture. Not in the least. Elvis was dead 28 years on August 16th and there are still thousands of people visiting his gravesite and as long as there is people he will be remembered around the world. Could you even imagine Garth 28 years after is death still generating the response from the people like ELVIS. Not in a million years. Elvis was and is still a HUGE part of are culture. in a way Garth never will be. They don't call him King for nothing. I was lucky in my life to see Elvis twice in concert and Garth a few times, there is no comparsion, Elvis was and always will be the KING.

Very very true. Country music wouldn't be what it is today without the contributions of Mr. Brooks.

blogcritics.org/archives/2005/08/25/040716.phpIn the realm of music, I think Garth Brooks is one of the most underrated artists in history. The biggest strike against him is that he’s a country singer. How many people listen to country? Not many. But what you should know is that Garth Brooks is the first solo artist in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America and Soundscan to sell a hundred million albums. To Brooks’ credit, he always confessed that Elvis should have had that distinction since Elvis lived in a time of fuzzy record keeping. Garth reinvigorated country music – although, maybe not for the best. Garth brought new life into a genre that most people stereotyped as being hick music. He brought a rock edge and a new cool to the genre. If it weren’t for Brooks’ hybridization of country music, the genre may never have enjoyed the 90s resurgence that it did; artists like Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Kenny Chesney might never have become stars if it wasn’t for Brooks. He is currently in his self-imposed semi-retirement, but he still finds time to do many charity concerts and events. Here is my Top 5 Garth Brooks songs list, in tribute to my favorite singer. 1. “If Tomorrow Never Comes” (Garth Brooks) – Brooks wrote this song in honor of his then-wife Sandy for being there for him during the good times and the bad. It is his breakthrough hit, and helped catapult him into the mainstream. 2. “Baby Jesus Is Born” (Garth Brooks & The Magic Of Christmas) – On Garth’s second Christmas album, he sings an incredibly original tune in the spirit of both the Gospel and gospel music. 3. “You Move Me” (Sevens) – He is at his element in this simple, yet powerful tune about love, with great background vocals with Trisha Yearwood. 4. “The Thunder Rolls” (No Fences) – Garth’s most popular song deals with infidelity. The video for this song was groundbreaking and the song is still as powerful as it was over ten years ago. 5. “Alabama Clay” (Garth Brooks) – One of his most heartfelt songs, Garth sings about a man’s duty: to live, to dream, to provide and to love. Sometimes in life, one must make a choice to sacrifice one of his duties in order to do the right thing. Man, this sounds like Spider-man. Honorable mention: The rest of the catalog. Everything is gold. I love Garth Brooks, but he gets strike two for playing favorites with the devil (not Bill Gates, but Wal-Mart – Al Barger’s “Garth Brooks now a Wal-Mart only artist” article here).

It must be hard to suck and sell 100,000,000 albums.
Alabama Clay is one of my favorites and he played it acoustically when I saw him in Birmingham. He said it was going to be the last single from the first album but they found Friends in Low Places and went with it instead. Looks like they made the right move as that was the song that exploded and put him on the road to selling those 100,000,000.
Why can't people (especially those who think they KNOW music) ever give him his due credit? I love the post above mine: Garth SUCKS. YES. Wow, very good post. Can you explain to me why or would that be too hard? If selling that many records means sucking, I will suck all day.

It must be hard to suck and sell 100,000,000 albums. Only Garth can do it. He's the one who sold one CD (all the same music) with 8 different inserts.

Just because you sell that many records doesn't mean I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon. I didn't and never will.
Back to my original response....Garth SUX

HAHAHAHA! Anybody here reads the EW magazine? On the first few pages of the mag, they have something called "Hit List by Dalton Ross". On this week's issue, which came out today, at No. 1...:
1. GARTH BROOKS WILL HAVE ALBUMS SOLD EXCLUSIVELY AT WAL-MART In related news, alter ego Chris Gaines has signed a deal to have his albums sold exclusively at 99¢ stores.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Bamafan, thank you for keeping a level head! I fear for the future of this board. Every post turns into this sophomoric crap. Why can't people focus on the music? If all you have to say is that somebody sucks, why bother posting? Why not go hang with the other pre-schoolers on the CMT boards?

It's great to have an opinion, but give some background to your comments. Did Garth run over your dog, or steal your best friend? It's easy to post things like Garth SUCKS but how about a little insight?
And by the way, the bandwagon is full. Also, Elvis has a million albums with retread music on it. What's the difference in that and packaging a cd with different covers?

Opinions don't need backed up. That's why. I agree and I don't. I think everyone should accept an opinion for what it is, no matter what or how much the explanation. But the more the explanation to your opinion, the more someone understands your opinion, it does help if an opinion is backed up.

If you have a problem with us posting our opinions, then you sound like the preschooler that belongs on those boards. I am simply stating that there is a way to express opinions without offending or attacking other people and/or their opinions, and lately it seems a number of people on this board are in capable of doing this. I also think we can state opinions about artists and/or their music without being totally disrespectful and/or mean-spirited. I don't plan to volley with you or anyone else. You obviously enjoy it, and I enjoy coming here to discuss... oh yeah, country music. Because I like it. As for Garth, he is a marketing genius, and in my opinion, an amazing performer. More power to him for taking more control over his music. It is, after all, his. People can love or hate him, but I think the millions and millions of albums sold and the millions of fans who are fiercely loyal to him and the amount of airplay he still receives speaks for itself. Or I guess I could just say, "I think he's good."

If you can not back up your opinions with why you have a certain opinion than your opinion means NOTHING. "I HATE GARTH!" Really? Why? "I just do." Wow that takes a lot of thought. Trying to get that post count up or you just like to be a PEST trying to start trouble. I like to see how everyone is so different on this board in their musical taste, but just seeing someone type I like this song or I hate this song is really annoying, but oh wait we are are talking about STEELO aren't we?

No offense was meant, just stating an opinion! and I have backed that opinion up in many other threads so I don't feel I need to do so again. It's hard not to read your post as it is funny to see you type "if you don't like it, don't read it", a million times. Do you copy and post that from the other 100's of threads that you have posted it in? My excitement for this thread is over. Elvis is the man and Garth sucks. I get it already. 100,000,000+ albums don't lie.
What Garth has done in a relatively short time is amazing. YOU CAN"T DENY THAT. Like him or hate him he set the precedent for how music is looked at TODAY(not in the past). His marketing plans are genius and haved morked more than even he could have imagined. Yes towards the end of his chart run his singles started slipping a little but who dosen't a a lull in their chart run over a period of time. When and if he returns, his first single will set records as well as his new album. I personally can't wait.

The KING is the best selling solo artist and always has been.
Let's see if anybody even remebers Garth's name 28 years after his death, I seriously doubt it.
Garth did more harm to country music than he ever did good and to some of his fellow artists that were on his label.
Elvis has more talent in his little pinky and had more effect on music and culture than Garth could ever dream to have. There is no comparsion.

That's an opinion and I'm sure Garth will be remembered long after he is gone and long after he is in the Country Music Hall of Fame and maybe even the Rock Hall of Fame.

Garth will NEVER be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and you can bet your savings on that.
Elvis in the ONLY artisT that is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Hall of Fame. The ONLY artist.
To even mention Garth in he same breath as Elvis is a joke. Lets see if 28 years after Garth's death they still talk about him like they do Elvis. Elvis is bigger dead than Garth ever was alive.
