Ugh, it's gonna break her Top10 streak of Studio albums. Then again, is it under her name in stores or under the soundtrack section?

If it were not technically credited to her on the album, it would be for historical purposes. But, yeah, the album itself credits MJB, and doesn't even say "soundtrack" on the cover. It's one of those "From and inspired by the film..." deals.

Mary J. Blige has a new album out. Has anyone noticed? By Mikael Wood Last week Mary J. Blige turned up unannounced at New York’s Apollo Theater to perform a duet with Sam Smith, the young British soul singer. The appearance, similar to one Blige made in January with the dance duo Disclosure, made major news online – so much, in fact, that it more or less overwhelmed the other development in Blige’s world: the release of her new album.. OK, so that album – the soundtrack to the Kevin Hart comedy “Think Like a Man Too” – may not be considered Blige’s proper follow-up to “My Life II … The Journey Continues (Act 1),” her elaborately titled studio disc from 2011. (It follows another stopgap, last year’s inevitable holiday set, “A Mary Christmas.”) But unlike the soundtrack to the first “Think Like a Man,” which collected songs by Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and others, the new disc is composed exclusively of new music by Blige – 14 songs, to be precise, from one of R&B’s biggest stars. And the movie did well in its opening weekend! Yet the accompanying album – a new Blige record in all but name -- seems to have arrived with weirdly little fanfare. Disappeared too: By Tuesday afternoon, a week after it came out, “Think Like a Man Too” had fallen off the iTunes chart, surpassed in sales by no fewer than three albums related to Clint Eastwood’s “Jersey Boys”: that film’s official soundtrack, the cast recording from the Broadway show and a greatest-hits set by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, on whom “Jersey Boys” is based. In a sense, Blige appears to have anticipated such a cool reception: This might be her laziest album ever, from the unimaginitive (if festive) cover of Shalamar’s “A Night to Remember” that opens the set to “All Fun and Games,” in which she doesn’t even bother to tweak the well worn cliché about how everything’s good till somebody gets hurt. Other tracks lack the sharp melodic hooks or the disarmingly agonized vocals that define such Blige classics as “Real Love,” “Not Gon’ Cry” and “Be Without You.” In “Wonderful” she insists, “I never felt so loved” – a recurring theme in Blige’s recent work – but summons little palpable relief; the song has something of a self-help zombie vibe. And yet there’s a way in which “Think Like a Man Too” benefits from these low expectations. As the overwrought title of “My Life II” suggests, Blige views her albums as proclamations – official documents designed to advance the epic narrative of struggle and redemption that she’s been spinning since her 1992 debut, “What’s the 411?” (Even then, she was framing her records as credible sources of information.) That mindset has resulted in some of the most powerfully unified R&B albums of all time. But it can also be thought to have kept Blige from following impulses that don’t quite meet her elevated standards. You always respect Blige more than you do, say, Mariah Carey – even if occasionally you'd rather spend time with Mariah. Here, though, Blige seems unburdened by that self-imposed pressure, as though the project’s in-between status had freed her to try out some things. There are goofy, rubbery disco jams co-produced by The-Dream and a tune in which the singer tells some dude that if he’s “looking for that ratchet-ness, don’t look my way.” There’s “Suitcase,” in which Blige lays out her plan to leave yet another no-good man but sets it over an unexpected trap beat. There’s even a comically half-baked collaboration with Pharrell Williams, whose considerable star power is one more element that failed to attract attention to this record. None of this stuff is great; I’d be shocked if any of it ends up on Blige’s next hits disc. But it’s kind of a kick to hear this avatar of artistic seriousness – the woman Bono once asked to help remake the grandiose “One” – in such a lightweight mode. If only it hadn’t blown away so easily.

Did she promote this album in any ways?
Is the movie a hit? A lot of this album's destiny depends on that too.

"Suitcase" hasn't done much at all at radio yet, and she's done no promotion, so it's not surprising this is her least successful debut.

Not good... 6/24 HITS chart: new 31 MARY J. BLIGE EPIC 8,181 -- THINK LIKE A MAN TOO I'm not the biggest MJB fan, but in her defense this is not a typical studio album from her. It's a soundtrack to a movie, and obviously won't see "Bodyguard" type sales.

What is that album cover from? There are ones that don't say "Soundtrack" (as indicated above), and others that do, with "All-New Music From Mary J. Blige" under it. Bodyguard-type sales? I think we can use much less successful albums for comparison purposes.

The movie hit #1 with about $29.2 million, which was a bit below the original's $33.6 million or so. Good budget-wise, but a bit disappointing since sequels are usually aimed to improve on the original's response.

If only three of her songs were used in the movie, I doubt people will be rushing out to buy the soundtrack.

Yeah. They probably threw together the idea of her doing that soundtrack like 2 or 3 months ago. Which would explain why it's full of rejects, and why the promo pics are extra old. She said something about LA Reid commissioned her to do it after he heard the songs she did that made the movie.

I really enjoy the soundtrack album. Bought it on iTunes and halfway through it. The fist few songs be4 the suckass pharrell song are all good! Love it!

I'm calling this My Life II (Act 2), Mary think she slick but she ain't fooling nobody. LMAO I'm starting to use "See That Boy Again", her funkiest uptempo since Growing Pains but Mary should have re-cut those vocals cuz they are off and not her normal off key either. The best songs are Wonderful, Self Love and Kiss & Make Up. The rest of this is embarassing for a soon-to-be legend.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6140804/jlo-tops-rbhip-hop-albums-ti-iggy-team-up-for-a-top-10-hit?utm_source=twitterMARY J. TIES WITH MARIAH: Rounding out the trio of top 10 debuts on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Mary J. Blige bows at No. 6 with her “Think Like a Man Too” soundtrack (9,000). The entry, which accompanies the film that opened on June 20, marks Blige's 16th top 10, tying her with Mariah Carey for the second-most top 10s by a female artist; Aretha Franklin leads all women with 31, dating to the chart's 1965 launch. Blige had last appeared on the list with her holiday album “A Mary Christmas," which reached No. 2 in December.

Growing Pains was an incredible body of work and The Journey Continues was a solid reminder of why Mary is Queen of her niche audience. Later day Mary has put out some amazing albums but this "soundtrack" ain't it. None of those songs you named are interesting or moves the narrative of Mary J. Blige forward. Mary been singing these same Oprah tunes for almost a decade now and if its not that then the production just doesn't work for her voice. Mary is stuck in a rut. I really hope R. Kelly can help her do a throwback soul album or a blues album to get Mary back in touch with what she does best. In fact let me go play the "Mary" album which is her tour de force masterpiece.

Her live show at the BET Experience last Sunday was ELECTRIC of course; she's become such a seasoned and dynamic performer on stage. Her live version of A Night to Remember is a lot better than that sterile studio version, too.

The Lox's new song samples "You Remind Me" https%3A//soundcloud.com/bestofbothoffices/the-lox-feat-sevyn-streeter-you-remind-me-dirtyHow much I wanted to LOVE this, but I just couldn't. Kind of watered down and weak. Also, I like Sevyn but who's idea was it for her to sing directly over Mary's vocal sample? There's no comparison and the juxtaposition is just awkward.

I saw her again last night. Front row seat. Noel Gourdin was her opening act (yawn). Her flight ended up being delayed, so she was about an hr late coming out...but it was so worth it when she finally did!
1. She is beautiful! She looks so young in person! When she came out, all the people in my surrounding section started raving about her looks. Her body is still tightt! 2. She is such a great entertainer. She's someone you have to experience live. If you are just a casual fan, after seeing her in concert, you will LOVE her. 3. I wish she would have bothered to promote SUITCASE. It is so hot live!!
I was able to record the entire show (the people in my section hated me because they were hoping my battery would die or my phone would run outta space so I could sit down. #teamiphone5s). I will upload it to youtube later.
