Don Williams would have had #1 hits during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s had Back In My Younger Days not peaked at #2 in 1990. That was the lead single to his True Love album of 1990. Released in September, it claimed the runner up position for two weeks in November while Joe Diffie claimed his first chart topper with Home and Holly Dunn her second with You Really Had Me Going. New Beginnings Week:
Let us salute those artists that after switching labels, kept their hit streaks going. First up is Crystal Gayle. After three years and three albums at Columbia Records, she signed to the Elektra label in 1982. However, her first musical statement there was a duet with Eddie Rabbitt called You And I. That was the lead single to his Radio Romance album. Released in September, it topped the country chart in December. It crossed over to #7 pop and #2 adult contemporary in early 1983. Rabbitt would get one more hit off the album and that is You Can't Run From Love in 1983 (#1 country, #55 pop, and #2 A.C.). Gayle did record an album for Elektra during this time and that was True Love. Its lead single, 'Til I Gain Control Again was released in November, 1982. When You And I was #1, Gayle's solo single was at #52 for the week. Gayle would top the chart in February, 1983 with that song. She got two more chart toppers off the album later in the year: Our Love Is On The Faultline and Baby, What About You.

Juice Newton and Silver Spur were on the RCA label during the 1970s. Newton branched out on a solo career with Capitol Records between 1978-1983. She then re-signed to the RCA label in 1984. An album was released that year called Can't Wait All Night. A top 40 country hit was produced with Ride 'Em Cowboy (#32). She was brought back to prominence with the 1985 album, Old Flame. Four more singles were released from the album: Hurt (#1 in 1986), Old Flame (#5), Cheap Love (#9), and What Can I Do With My Heart (#9 in 1987). This is around the time Terri Clark really started to suck. "Dirty Girl" was atrocious, and this song was no better. It felt like she was trying to cop a "rowdy" attitude that she was a little too polished to pull off. I've heard a lot of her Canadian singles, and many of them feel forced too, like that one that rips off George Strait's "Here for a Good Time". I do like "A Million Ways to Run" though.
Also, I finally found that Braid My Hair song out of curiosity and it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life. It almost sounds like self-parody.
Overall, 2008 always felt like a very directionless year in country music. There was a lot of interesting and weird stuff on the charts at the time, and no real trends to speak of.

New Beginnings, Part V:
Wynonna Judd went through a lot of changes between 1991-1992. First, her mother, Naomi Judd left the road due to health problems. That made Wynonna a solo act. Then, after eight years at RCA (1983-1991), Wynonna signed to MCA Records in 1991. Her debut single, She Is His Only Need came from her 1992 album, Wynonna and was released in January, 1992 and topped the chart in April. I Saw The Light topped the chart for three weeks during the summer. Next came her biggest hit and that was No One Else On Earth. That ended up being a four week #1 during the fall. Right after that peaked, both the American Country Countdown and Billboard named I Saw The Light the biggest hit of the year. She wrapped up the era with My Strongest Weakness. That hit #4 during the early part of 1993.

Fourth #1s Week:
Let us salute those singles that became the fourth chart topping hits from the album. In 1984, RCA threw a party for Earl Thomas Conley, who became the first artist to achieve four #1s from one album. That album was 1983's Don't Make It Easy For Me. That was led by Your Love's On The Line which hit the top in August. He followed that with Holding Her And Loving You, which also became a #1 in November. 1984 was kicked off with the title track. That was his most uptempo release. That hit #1 in April. Next up was Angel In Disguise. Released in April, it topped the chart in July and Conley certainly made history.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Video:
Eddie Rabbitt's last successful album was 1990's Jersey Boy. Lead single, On Second Thought was released in late 1989 as a Universal single. By the time it topped the chart in February 1990, it was listed under the Capitol banner. Runnin' With The Wind was the second single. That became Rabbitt's final top ten when it peaked at #8. He faltered a bit with It's Lonely Out Tonite which peaked at #32. Fourth single, American Boy was released in August and almost made the top ten in November but peaked at #11.
