I think this has done well enough to warrant a 3rd single release. Not everything has to go #1 or even top 10. Frankly there are just way too many artists catering to radio for them to all consistently go top 10 with every release. Only a select few A-listers are able to do that.
I agree that a 3rd single would struggle to out-peak this but I think it's their best bet here, unless they have a brand new song that they are absolutely completely excited about.
Anyway, it's not as if "Dust" has done poorly. And of course "Drunk Last Night" was a pretty big hit for them. I'm not sure how it didn't get to #1 on Mediabase (the week it was #1 on Billboard, it was a full 1.8 million ahead of FGL's "Stay" and 1.4 million ahead of Parmalee's "Carolina", and EYB was more than 130 spins ahead of FGL on that BB chart as well), but aside from not topping the revolving-door chart, "Drunk Last Night" had a strong climb at radio, and that netted it a #1 peak on Billboard. DLN is almost to Platinum in sales as well.
I think that a lot of people just assume acts will continue to build momentum in a linear fashion, but that rarely happens. It cycles constantly (and again, that goes for pretty much everybody who's not an A-lister). Just look at Little Big Town, Cassadee Pope, Danielle Bradbery, Darius Rucker, Josh Turner, Gary Allan, David Nail, Billy Currington, etc. It takes a lot more than 2-3 hits in this day and age to turn an artist into a huge household name.
In any case, I think these guys are doing just fine. They're not mega-stars but they do fairly well, and a #15 peak isn't anything to be ashamed of. I still haven't picked up the album (I haven't bought very many albums this year since I'm so broke, but my Christmas wish list is verrry long when it comes to albums), but I listened to it again online a while back and I think either "10,000 Towns", "Your Last Broken Heart", or "Just Add Moonlight" would do fairly well on radio, at least as good as "Say Goodnight" did. It would probably take another 25-30 week commitment from Republic Nashville but I don't see how they have any other choice unless they want to move on to a new album and are content with only having 1-2 hits per album.
"Dust" may actually be done already, or thereabouts. It lost 253k in yesterday's MB update and 260k today, so it looks like they'll get re-passed by the Swon Bros on next Monday's Billboard chart, and they may get passed by Keith Urban as well. Or maybe EYB rallies and sticks around for a few more weeks...we'll know more in the next few days.
