Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 2/9/2014

This week, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and others experience a decrease in sales numbers while Bruno Mars experiences a boost.

Last week, the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart featured several jumps in sales numbers for various artists involved in the 2014 Grammy Awards. This week, many of those figures have changed.

Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce & Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Face Decrease In Sales Numbers

This week, Beyonce, for instance, fell out of the Top 5 for the first time since the project became available in December. Her self-titled album fell from #5 to #7 on the charts. The project's sales figure for the week, 36,468 units sold, was a 20 percent drop for last week's 48,170 copies sold. Overall, the album has sold 1,706,803 units. Beyonce's album wasn't the only one to experience a decrease in sales this week.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' The Heist sold 13,161 units this week, a 55 percent decrease from 29,334 units sold last week. Overall, the album has sold 1,329,299 copies. The 55 percent drop has also impacted the album's placement on the chart. Last week, the album was at #11 and this week, it's dropped to #21. A similar drop came for Kendrick Lamar whose good kid, m.A.A.d. city album went from #21 to #39. Lamar's album sold 8,538 units this week, a 42 percent decrease from 14,805 units sold last week. Overall, the album has sold 1,174,205 copies.

Isaiah Rashad & Andy Mineo Face Fall From Last Week's Debut Figures

Last week's debuts on the charts also experienced drops this week. Andy Mineo's Never Land EP, for instance, was the #13 album last week with 25,931 units sold in its first week of availability. This week, the project experienced an 82 percent drop to 4,708 units sold. Another album that broke into the charts last week, was Isaiah Rashad's TDE debut release, Cilvia Demo. This week, the project also experienced a drop in sales. The EP went from a #40 spot last week to being out of the Top 200 this week. Rashad has seen favorable reviews for his Cilvia Demo release as HipHopDX, for example, awarded the project a 4 out of 5 X rating in its review.

Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans Rises This Week

While the Grammy Awards seem to have impacted the charts in various ways for the past few weeks, it appears another event may have influenced the charts this week. The NFL's Super Bowl XLVIII, which featured a halftime performance from Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also seems to have impacted the album sales chart. Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox sold 81,300 units this week, a 92 percent increase from 42,428 units sold last week. Overall, the project has sold 2,049,776 units. Another one of Mars' albums, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, experienced a 58 percent increase in sales from 16,474 units sold last week to 26,016 copies sold this week. Overall, Mars' Doo-Wops has sold 2,198,936 copies. Throughout his career, Mars has collaborated with several rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B and Eminem.

'Now 49' Bumps 'Frozen' From No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart


After a two-week rule of the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart -- and four weeks atop the list overall -- the "Frozen" soundtrack steps aside, letting the new "Now 49" hits compilation open atop the list.

"Now 49" debuts with 98,000 copies sold in the week ending February 9, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, "Frozen" slips to No. 2 with 88,000 (down 6%).

"Now 49" is just the 24th various artists compilation to reach No. 1 since the Billboard 200 became a regularly-published weekly chart in 1956. Of the 24 compilations to rule the list, 17 of them were "Now" albums. (Though, the last non-"Now" compilation at No. 1 did happen to have the word "Now" in its title: the charity set "Hope for Haiti Now" in February of 2010.)

"Now 49" is also the first No. 1 for the long-running "Now That's What I Call Music!" series since "Now 43," which debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated Aug. 25, 2012.

All 49 of the regular (numbered) "Now" albums have reached the top 10, and all but the first debuted in the top 10. The last "Now" set, "Now 48," debuted at No. 3 with 114,000 sold in November. The "Now" series has also scored top 10s with four of its non-numbered titles: "Now That's What I Call Christmas!" (No. 3 in 2001), "Now That's What I Call Christmas! 3" (No. 10, 2006), "Now That's What I Call Country" (No. 7, 2008) and "Now That's What I Call Country Vol. 2" (No. 10, 2009).

The milestone "Now 50" compilation is scheduled for release on May 6. A track list has not been announced.

"Now 49's" debut comes almost exactly 15 years after the first "Now" album reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Jan. 23, 1999).

As for "Frozen," its cumulative sales increase to 952,000 this week, after 11 weeks in release. At its current sales rate, it should surpass 1 million next week.

Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" climbs 7-3 with 81,000 (up 92%) in the wake of the first full week of impact after his Super Bowl halftime show performance on February 2. His first album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," just misses re-entering the top 10, as it glides 19-11 with 26,000 (up 58%).

The last time a Super Bowl halftime performer was in the top 10 the week after the big game was in 2009. That year, Bruce Springsteen's brand new "Working On a Dream" fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in the week after the game -- the album's second week on the chart. The album was released the Tuesday before the Super Bowl, and debuted at No. 1 with 224,000. It then sold 102,000 in the week after the game.

Rather excitingly, this is the first post-game week where a halftime performer has been in the top 10 -- with an older album -- since 2003. The week after the game that year, Shania Twain's "Up!" jumped back into the top 10, rising 12-8 with 67,000 (up 41%). (Twain co-headlined the show that year with No Doubt.)

At No. 4 on the Billboard 200 this week is the chart's second-highest debut: Toni Braxton & Babyface's "Love, Marriage & Divorce" with 67,000. The album starts stronger than expected, as last week, industry sources had forecasted the set to start with perhaps 60,000.

It's the highest charting album for Braxton since her "Libra" also debuted (and peaked) at No. 4 in 2005, and the highest charting album ever for Babyface. The latter has only once visited the top 10 before, with 2005's No. 10 set "Grown & Sexy."

Broken Bells and Little Mix are up next in the Billboard 200's top 10, as their latest efforts start at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

Broken Bells' "After the Disco" bows with 44,000, while Little Mix's "Salute" starts with 43,000. It's the second album, and second top 10 set, for both acts. Broken Bells' self-titled debut reached No. 7 in 2010 (49,000 first week) and Little Mix's debut, "DNA," launched at No. 4 in 2013 (50,000 first week).

As for the rest of the top 10 this week: Beyonce's self-titled album dips 5-7 with 38,000 (down 20%), Lorde's "Pure Heroine" falls 3-8 with just over 35,000 (down 48%), the "2014 Grammy Nominees" compilation tumbles 2-9 with 35,000 (down 60%) and Katy Perry's "PRISM" descends 9-10 with 27,000 (down 12%).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" continues to reign at No. 1 -- though it has a significant drop in sales. The song sold 291,000 downloads in the most recent tracking week, down 22%. The sales erosion is owed to how the song saw a big 27% gain a week ago, following Perry's performance on the January 26 Grammy Awards. Without the Awards show exposure this week, the song's sales naturally came back down.

Pharrell's Oscar-nominated "Happy," meanwhile, continues to gain, as it climbs 3-2 with 252,000 (up 15%).

Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, is pushed back 2-3 despite a gain of 3%. It sold 242,000 last week.

Passenger's "Let Her Go" steps 5-4 with 182,000 (up 3%). A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" is up 6-5 with 171,000 (up 12%).

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" flies 16-6 with 138,000 (up 28%) -- the song's second-largest sales week. It only sold more over Christmas week, when it shifted 153,000 downloads.

Bastille's "Pompeii" is up two rungs to No. 7 with 131,000 (down 6%), Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, is steady at No. 8 with 130,000 (down 9%) and Aloe Blacc's "The Man" rises 13-9 with 125,000 (down 3%). Lorde's "Team" rounds out the top 10, as it ascends 12-10 with 113,000 (down 13%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending February 2) totaled 4.51 million units, down 3% compared with the sum last week (4.64 million) and down 22% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.81 million). Year to date album sales stand at 27.50 million, down 15% compared to the same total at this point last year (32.30 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.61 million downloads, down 1% compared with last week (27.32 million) and down 14% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (27.32 million). Year to date track sales are at 151.39 million, down 11% compared to the same total at this point last year (170.97 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: the week after the Grammy Awards, Mumford & Sons' album of the year-winning "Babel" returned to No. 1, selling 185,000 (up 242%).

Only a 6% decrease for Frozen. Very nice. Hopefully, it will at least maintain this level of stability until at least the Oscars. The combination of Idina performing "Let It Go" and the song possibly winning could give it a nice spike.

Both of Bruno Mars's albums are listed in the top 15 on The Billboard 200 in this, the first full week following his well-received Super Bowl headlining performance. "Unorthodox Jukebox" jumps from #7 to #3 in its 61st week. "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" jumps from #19 to #11 in its 172nd week. It's the highest ranking for "Jukebox" since March; the highest for "Doo-Wops" since July 2012.

"Jukebox" tops the 2 million mark in U.S. sales this week. It's Mars's second 2-million seller in a row. "Doo-Wops" is up to 2,199,000.

"Jukebox" has charted in the top three in three calendar years. It debuted at #2 in December 2012 and rose to #1 in March 2013. "Jukebox" was an upset winner for Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys two weeks ago.

"Jukebox" sold 38K digital copies this week (out of 81K total), which puts it back at #1 on Top Digital Albums. This is its third week on top.

"Doo-Wops" is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 13th week.

"Now 49" enters The Billboard 200 at #1. This is the 17th installment in the long-running franchise to reach the top spot. These 17 albums have spent a combined total of 30 weeks at #1. Since Nov. 14, 1998, when the first "Now" volume entered the chart, only one artist, Eminem, has logged as many or more weeks at #1. (He has spent 31 weeks on top.)

"Now 49" sold 98K copies this week. This is the fifth consecutive week that the #1 album has sold fewer than 100K copies. That's the longest stretch in which no albums topped 100K since late 2010-early 2011, when it happened for six straight weeks. (Sales are traditionally slow this time of year.) Look for Eric Church's "The Outsiders" to break this soft sales streak next week.

The "Frozen" soundtrack dips from #1 to #2. It's #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 11th week. "Frozen" ranked in the top five at the box-office for the 11th consecutive weekend. It's already the fifth-highest grossing animated movie of all time. (Excluding sequels, it's third, behind "The Lion King" and "Finding Nemo.")

Toni Braxton & Babyface's "Love, Marriage & Divorce" debuts at #4. It's Braxton's first top five album since 2005's "Libra." It's Babyface's first top five album ever. The concept album about divorce is an instant front-runner for a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. The two stars have won a combined total of 16 Grammys.

It’s been nearly 22 years since Braxton was featured on Babyface's R&B hit "Give U My Heart" from the "Boomerang" soundtrack. Babyface went on to write or co-write Braxton's first four top 10 hits on the Hot 100: "Another Sad Love Song," "Breathe Again," "You Mean The World To Me" and "You're Makin' Me High."

The new album debuts just five months after Braxton's younger sister Tamar Braxton reached #2 with "Love & War."

Two producers who have won Grammys as Producer of the Year, Non-Classical appear in this week's top five as artists. Babyface has won the award four times, more than any other producer since the category was added in 1974. Danger Mouse won three years ago.

Danger Mouse is one-half of the duo Broken Bells, whose "After The Disco" debuts at #5. It's the duo's second top 10 album. Broken Bells also features James Mercer of The Shins. Broken Bells has now had as many top 10 albums as The Shins, and one more than Gnarls Barkley, the other duo that Danger Mouse is in.

Little Mix's "Salute" debuts at #6. It's the British girl group's second top 10 album. "DNA" reached #4 in June 2013. Spice Girls, the most famous British girl group, also had two top 10 albums. Little Mix was the winner of Season 8 of the U.K. version of "The X Factor."

"Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the fifth straight week (291K). Will it log its third week at #1 on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blogs.

Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Of Mice And Men's "Restoring Force" drops from #4 to #33. Casting Crowns's "Thrive" drops from #6 to #14. Imagine Dragons's "Night Visions" drops from #8 to #12. Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" drops from #10 to #28.

Within Temptation's "Hydra" debuts at #16. It's the Dutch symphonic metal band's sixth studio album; its first to crack the chart. (A rather different group, Toto, reached #37 with an album with the same title in 1979.) … Florida Georgia Line's "Here's To The Good Times" jumps from #26 to #19 in its 62nd week. The album returns to #1 on Top Country Albums. This is its 10th week on top … "Wow Gospel 2014" debuts at #26 … Eric Paslay's eponymous debut album bows at #31 … For Today's fifth studio album, "Fight The Silence," debuts at #32 … Behemoth's "The Satanist" debuts at #34. It's the 10th studio album by the Polish death metal band.

The Beatles' "1" jumps from #74 to #37 in its 160th chart week in the immediate wake of Sunday's TV special marking the 50th anniversary of the group's first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." (It's one of eight Beatles albums on this week's chart.) The album has sold 12,308,000 copies since its release in 2000. It's the best-selling album of the last 15 years; the fourth best-selling album since Nielsen SoundScan set up shop in 1991.

"The LEGO Movie" soundtrack debuts at #48. The movie was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The album's key song, "Everything Is Awesome!!!" by Tegan & Sara featuring The Lonely Island, sold 32K copies this week.

Metallica's "Through The Never" is #1 on Top Music Videos for the second straight week. It sold 12K copies this week.

Coming Attractions: Look for Eric Church's "The Outsiders" to debut at #1 next week. His last album, "Chief," opened at #1 in July 2011. Also due: The Glitch Mob's "Love Death Immortality" and Frankie Ballard's "Sunshine & Whiskey."

RE the catalog chart- is the rule still that an album is catalog-chart-eligible when, anytime after 78 weeks of release, it drops below the top 100? (Obviously, if it rebounds to the top 100 of the Billboard 200, it also stays on the catalog chart.) I forget when BB changed it from two years to a year-and-a-half.

Chart Moves: 'LEGO Movie' Soundtrack Debuts, the Beatles Gain After CBS Special

-- Various Artists, "WOW Gospel 2014" - No. 26 - Only two of the WOW Gospel compilations have gone higher on the chart: the 2006 and 2007 editions, which climbed to Nos. 20 and 21, respectively. The latest set gives the numbered WOW series its 15th straight No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart as well.

-- Soundtrack, "The LEGO Movie" - No. 48 - Its parent film did awesome at the U.S. and Canada box office in its first weekend, earning $69 million between February 7-9. The album's debut is fueled only by downloads (6,000), as the CD version arrived to market on February 11.

-- Pat Metheny Unity Group, "Kin" - No. 50 - This is Pat Metheny's highest charting album since way back in 1982, when the 20-time Grammy Award winner's Offramp also reached No. 50. He's only been higher once before, with 1979's New Chautauqua (No. 44).

-- Paul Rodgers, "The Royal Sessions" - No. 81 - After charting three albums with Queen between 2005 and 2009, Rodgers returns solo -- and with his highest-charting set yet ever. "The Royal Sessions" opens with 4,000 at No. 81, and also gives him his first No. 1 on Blues Albums. (The album features covers of

-- Tim McGraw, "Love Story" - No. 116 - This love-themed compilation of older material was exclusively available as a physical CD at Walmart, while it was widely available as a digital album. It's McGraw's 20th charting album on Top Country Albums, where it enters at No. 19.

-- The Beatles, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - No. 132 - Following CBS' airing of the all-star concert "The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles" on Feb. 9, the band's catalog gets a lift. This album, for example, is up 38% while the greatest hits album "1" at No. 37 rises by 91%. In total, there are eight albums by the Beatles on the chart this week. Watch for further gains on next week's tally, as CBS repeated the concert on Feb. 12.
