Was anyone here a member of the MLVC.org Madonna Digest back around the time the Bedtime Stories album came out? I was in grad school and used to subscribe. It was lots of fun. Keith Caulfield of Billboard magazine was a member, prior to his career. He was just a college student at the time and we became friends.
Anyway, there was a thread about folks having fun changing the lyrics to Madonna songs to make them funny and a joke. So the gauntlet was thrown and the challenge was given to the list serve about coming up with a parody of a Madonna song. I wrote one that became a bit of a hit on the list serve and folks were passing around. I took the lyrics to the song "Secret" and made them about how "my baby gave me VD...oooohh oooohh...my baby shared his VD with me...." For those of you who are too young to remember the initials VD, it is shorthand for venereal disease / sexually transmitted disease.
So years later, I join Pulse, and I of course gravitate to the Madonna forums. Lo and behold, someone had a snippet of the lyrics I wrote as their signature line and it was like 15 years later. I thought that was hysterical and we had a good laugh about it and when I wrote it. I wish I remembered who that was now!

Nothing will ever top the complete and utter chaos that was the WB Ray of Light board, in terms of past Internet memories. :)

Bah! 74/75 I didn't think to put "Me against the music" because I was only thinking of her as a lead artist >:(

The sheer quantity of Madonna’s Top Tens on the Hot 100 is staggering. Definitely the Queen of Overall Chart Records Worldwide. Definitely. And her top-10 count in the UK is ridiculous. Isn't it like 60?

^I was waiting for that... Anyway if I do have anything nice to say about him it's that he played M, which was pretty genius considering how smart she is. Reminds me of when Sharon Stone rebuffed M's advances at a basketball game and then announced it to the press. Oh man, the Pulse Awards are going to be so much fun this year.

LOL. Miss Drake, "she", etc. Y'all are a mess. Meanwhile, HE has the power to move over a million for a mix tape alone. There's a reason why Madonna got on stage with HIM during HIS set but, yeah, anyway...I hope Rocco makes an appearance in the video and that the song can get her another charting position on the Club Songs/Dance charts! Such a jam. Yeah....but will Drake matter in a legendary way 30 years from now and be at the top of almost every list? Until then his accomplishments are good but nothing I will bow down to! :)

I don't bow to mere mortal because I don't believe in false idols but this is the Rebel Heart thread so let's continue discussions about the album and not try to shade other successful artists. Body Shop is still my favorite song on the album. I love her childlike, curious vocals on the song and the Middle Eastern production.
Edit: Oh shit. Get Together just came on randomly on my phone. JAM. What song did this sample?

I can't think of one live at the moment but I am going to go with Crazy For You. Live To Tell, Rain, Take A Bow, I'll Remember, and Another Suitcase In Another Hall are not far behind though.

Stardust's track unofficially samples "Holiday" and Chaka Khan's "Fate," so everything's mixed in.

I love when Madonna samples herself. She does it to really cool effect on Rebel Heart too.

Madge is an underrated vocalist. Comments like Shep Pettibone's confirm she really is. There are songs that struck me hard from the first moment I heard her, starting with her ballads: You'll see, You must love me (specially in the context of the movie!), Live to tell, Frozen. Powerful dynamics in Like a Prayer and Ray of light

Her voice conveys emotion that some of the technically superior singers can't & don't. Her post-Evita voice gives me chills at times.

My favorite studio vocal of hers far and away is Papa Don't Preach. That restrained throatiness on the bridges unleashes into a passionate powerhouse belt on the chorus. Her voice had this vulnerable burnished beauty in '86, just past the coquettishness of the Virgin era and before the full-on maturity of the Like a Prayer album. Honorable mention: Rainbow High. Her head voice notes have such beautiful color to them.
Best live vocal: Sooner or Later at the Oscars is the obvious choice for its majestic power and radiant tones. But I'm going to pick something a bit more subtle yet achingly pretty: Drowned World's Lo Que Siente La Mujer. Her breath control on the long notes is unbelievable. Honorable Mention: Bad Girl on SNL for its raw and fierce beauty and Fever on Arsenio Hall for its velvety smooth tone.

^i agree. As much as I love the Bjorks, Courtneys, Toris and Sades of the world, there are only 3 women in music on that heavenly iconic level of talent combined with achievement and creativity: Barbra (#1 Selling RIAA Female Artist), Whitney (#1 Billboard Top 200 Albums Female Artist) & Madonna (#1 Worldwide Selling & Touring Female Artist).

Sort of agree with you, BUT (and some years ago I couldn't think I could say this), I'd replace Whitney with Mariah Carey. Not even because of her great chart achievements but mainly because of her deep involvement in all her musical outputs: writing, production, and a unique voice, plus her own contributions to pop music changes like her dedication for dance remixes that were re-recorded, or push for the hip/hop pop combos, and of course her revitalization of Christmas pop music. I wasn't a fan of her until Fantasy and then she gradually increased in my ranking of favorite divas. I still think Madonna is THE NUMBER ONE :) but I have to give credit where credit is due and Mariah deserves -I think- a bit more serious credit than what she receives. Back to Madonna, it's hard to pinpoint (although I already sort of did) strong vocal performance eras, but I think I could highlight True Blue and Like a Prayer as the most attitudinal vocals she's had whereas Evita - Ray of Light as her best technical ones. Papa don't preach and Live to tell are great examples of strong and multicolored performances in a single song. But I also loved her innocence reflected in True Blue or even the strength of White Heat. Whereas in LAP, the title track to me has her strongest and most believable delivery... But I can also fully believe her complex emotions in 'Til Death do us Part, or Oh Father. I loved her dynamism in ROL. The title track is a vocal roller coaster (I remember Natasha Bedingfield saying how hard it was to cover that one), whereas I loved her angry moments in Candy perfume girl (I remember a syndicated modern rock chart show presented it as a bonus song and praised her delivery) and her changes in Drowned World. Frozen was just beautiful :) Oh gee, great memories!

I think the secret to the success of her music is her emotive power. She is able to tap into something that made everyone know her songs and recognize her distinctive vocals. At times, especially her mid tempo and ballads, I actually can feel her own emotions. She is not a great vocalist but she can certainly dig deep into your heart and soul. X-Static Process is a prime example of her simple yet extremely effective smooth effortless vocals.

She has an understanding of music in a way that no other diva has. Anyway, I am so thrilled you emphasized True Blue, both song and album, for its vocal accomplishments. On the song, particularly the Color Mix, the la la las possess astonishing beauty. And OYH & White Heat are a one-two punch of attitude and vocal depth.
