Epic probably is getting a piece of all her side-ventures, I doubt they're expecting to profit off her album sales. Agreed. She basically started with them a year ago now, and the only studio time she's booked thus far seems to have been related to "Infinity". I can't imagine they'd be letting her take her time like this unless they were profiting from her some other way. I think at this point of her career, we're going to be seeing a lot more of these "side ventures" than new albums every couple years.

If by "side ventures" y'all mean her performances, she'd have to have a 360 deal then. Which I don't think she'd sign one at this point in her career. Mariah's money savvy. I think she's just cleared the air with them about what she wants to do in this phase and they've come to some sort of agreement to let her have her freedom. I hope she'll have an album out next year, but if the rumours of her touring in Europe in the spring are true, then she'd have to record pretty fast for her latest standards.

I'm okay with her doing whatever she wants to do as long as she is not out there acting desperate trying to compete with children she has no business even being in the same industry as.
I'm extremely happy with her Beacon era and Vegas so far. All highlight her legacy and she isn't out there acting a fool :)

If by "side ventures" y'all mean her performances, she'd have to have a 360 deal then. I think what was meant was her perfumes, beverage, endorsements, video game ventures, etc. ...and then Almost Home comes on shuffle and you realize it's your favorite Mariah song since 2008... That's unfortunate.

Yes, but saying it's her best song since 2008 when she has had not one, but two stellar ALBUMS (two of the best of her career, at that) since.

Everytime I hear Almost Home, it immediately calls to mind 80s MOR power ballads, particularly These Dreams by Heart (which I happen to love, but still...not really the kind of music I look for Mariah to make in this decade).

Well she is also back on a label where her catalog can be best put to use. He has a plan. He wouldn't have signed her to Epic if he didn't.

They released #1s to infinity - that's about as strategic as they can get with her catalog.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if they're the ones that set up this whole Vegas residency and are receiving their fair share of the profits.

Hey, Epic's magic worked on me. I got me to buy #1s to Infinity, even though I have almost all of those songs on CD form. Actually, never mind...I keep forgetting I don't own a CD of debut, Emotions, or Music Box and I had to get a bootleg copy of Butterfly after I lost mine.

the only studio time she's booked thus far seems to have been related to "Infinity". Right. She worked with Eric Hudson and a few other people writing a bunch of songs for the re-release of #1's, and chose "Infinity" as the new track to include on that project. JD said he was in the studio with her and B. Cox working on new music. But who knows what happened to those songs. Then Diane Warren tweeted she wrote a song with Mariah. If we get any more new music this year, I hope it's a Christmas song or two. I could use more great, new holiday music from Mariah cuz I've played MC+MCIIY to death. ==== Leona Lewis talks about Mariah: www.vibe.com/2015/09/leona-lewis-def-jam-i-am-interview/

I always say a voice is nothing without material so if ya want next generations to learn something then better start hustling today hunty. If not Vegas always could use a tribute act who can sing really nice.

Leona always worships Mariah and gives her credit for being her (obvious) inspiration, unlike other ungrateful brats who, as soon as they aren't publicly acknowledged, attempt to re-write history and claim that their idol and main inspiration is Madonna LOLOL. Yeah...because she taught you how to sing like that.

I hope Mariah has an album out within the next year or two. Even if she doesn't have a big hit again, I'd still like if she had at least one era with proper single selection and promotion, after Memoirs, MIAM, and most of E=MC2. Some of the cuts off MIAM prove she can still make mature music that will be radio-friendly ("#Beautiful, "YDKWTD," and "Dedicated"). I don't think she should give those types of songs up just yet.

NOT Janet getting me to play Charmbracelet just to sing the first few lines of "Yours"! :'(
I had to, I don't care.

Best believe Epic didn't sign her with intentions to let her do whatever she wants (with little profit to them) out of the goodness of their hearts. I doubt she'd have a 360 deal 25 years into her career. LA Reid is going to have her recording as soon as she's done with these shows, Empire and the movie. Maybe it's a 180 deal then? Meet me halfway lol. I'm pretty sure Madonna still has her 360 with Live Nation. And I could say a lot of things about Madonna but 'not business savvy' isn't any of those things. It's all about how well the deal is crafted. On its face I hate the concept of 360s, but oddly enough I actually think it's okay for someone like a Mariah or Madonna to do it precisely because they generate so much money outside of their albums and they have the leverage to negotiate a deal that is profitable for everyone involved even after ensuring the artist gets the biggest slice of the pie. For someone just starting out, 360 deals are awful. You're new and you already aren't getting much money as it is, never mind enough money to be forking over to someone else. But you have no leverage to fight it. And frankly, no guarantee that you'll ever get these hypothetical side ventures that the label wants in on. It's just a booby trap to lock you in on the off chance you happen to be the next industry breakthrough. But Mariah, honestly, can afford it and is in a position where it could be considered a smart business model instead of desperately grasping at whatever is handed to her. Going back to how well the deal is negotiated, I would assume that it only includes ventures that occurred after she signed with them - the current lines of perfumes, jewelry, etc. would be off the table because Epic had nothing to do with the launch of those products, but Vegas and the WoW plug (which probably is a bigger $$$ deal for the music licensing than Mariah's own appearance in it) are included. I know Mimi has new management now but it really seems like Epic is the one that has done the heavy lifting thus far, so it would make sense that part of Mariah's deal with them is giving them a cut of it. Of course this is all speculation; whatever her deal is, I'm sure LA took care of her and she wouldn't have signed on if he didn't.

@antigonerising diva explain this 180, 360 thing please thanks. On phone now so can't fully into it. But I was joking about the 180. A 360 is when an artist agrees to give the lane a portion of their earnings from non music ventures. Endorsements, merchandising, songwriting royalties and so on. Traditional deals only take profit from the album and single sales. If you are an empire already you can afford this and even make it part of your bus. plan but newbies can't really afford to take the hit to their earning potential imo. Even though so many of them take the hit anyway.

First she attends a Sting show and now this. I hope she does a rock-tinged song on her next album. She would kill something like that now that she's been using more of her full voice for the past couple of albums.

U2 kind of blows chunks though. !!!! I can't stand their music. I love rock, but U2 is the one big rock group I've never liked mostly because I've always found them overrated AF. When they won AOTY at the 2006 Grammys was the last straw; I wasn't a Mariah die hard fan at the time, but I was still PRESSED she didn't win AOTY when she was the one who deserved it. Mariah must be a longtime fan or something though. She sang "With Or Without You" at her prom.
