songs all had that like 'clap' sound running throughout them @ this description. Do you know what I mean though? like that sound that is very prominently heard in We Belong Together? how would you describe it?

I think also its important to note when looking at trends in pop music, the moment one starts the others dont just end, there normally is a big mixture of songs from these different genres, like kelly clarkson getting big hits with a pop rock sound at the height of the electropop trend.

No she didn't (although her fans have done a great job at re-writing history). Rihanna - SOS Justin Timberlake - Sexy Back Nelly Furtado - Maneater Timbaland - The Way I Are 50 Cent - Ayo Technology Kanye West - Stronger Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music Ne-Yo - Closer Britney Spears - Womanizer Kevin Rudolf - Let It Rock Chris Brown - Forever Katy Perry - Hot N Cold Estelle - American Boy Sean Kingston - Take You There Katy Perry - Hot N Cold Britney Spears - Gimme More Rihanna - Disturbia ...and so on. These songs are the ones which brought electropop, synth-pop, dance-pop back mainstream domination. I'd even argue the whole crunk explosion lead to this as well, since there were a few songs like Akon - Smack That, Flo Rida - Low, Usher - Love In This Club which seemed to be somewhere inbetween crunk and dance-pop.

Yeah anyone who thinks Gaga alone started the Dance upswing has memory issues. It had been building for a few years by the time she came around. SOS was the first track I can think of to be a big hit with a strong direct influence from there, but Timbaland was the biggest pusher and after the Shock Value hits was done other acts started gravitating towards there. Strong synthesizer sounds had been coming back since Lil Jon.
I remember that it was around Spring/Summer 2008 that I noticed that most of the songs becoming hits were using a four-to-the-floor beat progression rather than the rhythmic patterns of the previous two years.
However, it was the combo of Gaga's breakthrough and the massive return of the BEP that really kicked it into high gear.

Of all people, I credit Rihanna the most with the dance pop sound. Timbo was also close behind with his productions (at least he used to be an innovator...). She definitely has been leaning towards that style especially since SOS was released. Of course, after Don't Stop the Music ended its run, several other R&B artists turned it into a trend. Katy Perry also was important with how she combined pop rock with an electro sound (and made pop-rock obselete). Dance-pop was happening for years before Gaga came out, she's just the Madonna (synthpop was existed before her) of dance-pop. Still important, but you gotta give credit only where it's due.

It's just so obvious why Dark Horse was sent to urban. Delay delay delay!! The longer DH lasts, the further to "warm weather across the nation" it becomes before the release of Birthday. It's all about timing. Has nothing to do with year-end countdowns or longevity in regards to DH. That's merely a perk at this point.

I'm still uncertain on this one. It was one that I would usually skip. Now that I know it's going to be a single, I find myself playing it and loving it. I'm excited for Legendary Lovers next! I hope Birthday does good so it doesn't screw thing up for LL. On a happy note, this will probably be #1 on pop radio, or really close around my birthday in mid-June! Bring out the big balloons!

Yes, because having the song get airplay on urban, a format likely to never play a Katy Perry song again, is clearly going to tide over Katy's target audience of pop, HAC, and AC listeners. (Rhythmic listeners have a good chance that they also listen to urban so can't really group them in)

I get what you're saying, but I still think they are more about timing for the next single, versus making the current, already peaked single, last longer than ever. I think they think more long term than short term. Especially in regards to Happy. I'm sure her chart-calculating guros are carefully planning every move. Sending DH to urban gives them more time.

"Last Friday Night" was a summer release... Its video was released in June. And its video was released crazy early.

Technically yesterday but doesn't really matter. Wonder how high this will get before there's an official announcement. Well it's today's update, jus' sayin' Look at Happy's spins today on Kworb. Look at Happy's spins in "today's" update. They're always a day behind. Below 50 songs don't update until afternoon/evening, unlike the top 50 which is in the morning. Invincible (whatever his new name is) doesn't label them to correspond with the top 50 updates. I know Mediabase dates things strangely or something so he probably goes off of that.

I'm kinda loving this! 1980 disco, roller skating sounding Katy lol! Def. spring/summers 2014s Treasure etc..She's def. riding the retro disco/funk wave (yet contemporary enough sound) that started a year ago w/ a very effective, *super radio friendly* song! Mark my words it's gonna smash on radio (or at the min. do way better than Unconditionally).Perfect for summer! Fab. production that blends in perfectly w/ the infectious lyrics, melody and overall vibe of the song. Not first single material but a perfect 2-4th single and I could see this (like all her other songs) getting eaten up alive by radio. Miles better and funkier than Part Of Me and The One That Got Away along w/ a few others that were waay more bland and forgettable. Dunno why this isn't every bit as hit worthy the songs I mentioned. Instantly liked this on first listen. Loving it more and more w/ each listen. Could see how some wouldn't care for it. The reaction has been either love or hate for some reason. I actually think it's VERY different from anything shes done (though do 'get' the comparisons to Last Friday Night). However,I get why LFN would be more universally appealing. This is def. more of risky song due to the disco/retro production. I think this will do better...maybe way better than some of the doubters have. The ONLY kind of annoying and unnecessary part for me is when she says 'Happy B-day' in that Marilyn Monroe voice (which is prob. the point lol). Just adds nothing. My only wish would be if the radio version edits or fades that part out.

"It Takes Two" would be a better single choice, this one isn't that good.

They definitely had a plan. I don't stan for Katy, but I'm holding out on buying this until a week when she has a shot at #1, just because records and hot streaks excite me, no matter who the artist is. And I'd like to see her eventually pass Rihanna in career #1s.

Just sounds so early Prince, Teena Marie etc etc..all those late 70s/early 80s hot funk jams (esp. in the first minute/opening versus). Total ear candy. Most artists have a signature 'sound' or song. Doesn't mean they're recycling their own songs or non risk takers. Again, while similar to LFN, and a very classic 'Katy Perry' song, w/ the production, it's unlike anything she's ever done/out of left field which shows she def. "doesn't always play it super safe" or puts out songs that alll "sound the same" like some say. This is def. a risky yet catchy as hell song (what matters the most regardless of the beats).
