Her "goofball" shtick is tired as f**k at this point. As is your constant Debbie Downer shit in every Katy thread. Also, considering you think this song is so "boring" and "tired," you sure do spend a lot of time posting in its thread.

I just listened to this again and it's probably my second favorite song on the album (behind Dark Horse). I actually would want to hear that Go for it.That's sh!t boo. Not a musical queef.

Just like I called Dark Horse as one of the biggest hits of her career the moment it came out and Uneventfully as a non-entity the moment it came out. Not gonna crawl up her ass and nest there just cause some people have. When she releases another single of the caliber of something like DH, you can be damn sure I'll acknowledge it as I did in the DH thread (so clearly I'm not negative in "every" Katy thread). And for the record I haven't even posted that many times in this thread (3 or 4 maybe), so not sure what you mean by that last bit.

All joking aside, I like this. Prefer this over Roar and Unconditionally. Dark Horse is great, but it burned very quickly for me.

Call this generic/boring all you want, it's a summer smash that is going to happen regardless of opinions.

This is stale and dated. This is barely better than Unconditionally.

Top 5 for sure. Radio is so far up her pussy that she could literally record a queef and it would go Top 10. Actually not totally true. Uneventfully barely made top 10 despite riding the massive momentum of Roar. She's just like anyone else, if she puts a song that doesn't appeal to radio or is too boring her name is only gonna take it so far. Just like Gaga with Judas when she was at the height of her CHR popularity. This will probably go top 5 on CHR just because it's catchier than Uneventfully, but don't bank on it being huge just cause its her. It's too boring and tired for that. You're right. I don't think it will resonate. When Mariah kept verses tense, syncopated chorus to beat, added rock 'n' roll cross-rhythms on post-choruses, and finally brought resolve through unfettered adlibs and booming kick drums, it never worked. Besides, nothing tires a pop music fan like a simple summery disco tune about sex that's built around a fat sub-bass. Add a sparkly rhythm, a warm horn section, live percussion, retro melodies, overdubbed vocals, and a breakdown that recalls 90's Daft Punk, and everyone will surely be snoring. Katy Perry has as much soul and creativity as a box of tampons, but every so often, she pulls a great pop song out of the bag. "Brithday" does not offer any new gestures, but it mines and recombines modern and timeless quite skilfully.

I'm so glad this song won't be Peacocked. This will be another monster hit for her. There's no reason it won't be one.

Tampons are actually probably one of the most creative inventions in the human health field. They have been a staple in feminine hygiene for thousands of years, but I doubt we'll be listening to Katy Perry for that long...

I think with her next album she's going to have to do something different and change her sound, if not the general public is going to start getting sick of her releasing the same type of songs over and over again.

Yes that really didn't make any sense at all, she's following the same formula as the Teenage Dream era. Birthday is like a copy of Last Friday Night.

I agree that her next album will be very crucial in terms of who she really is as an artist. I think that she still has her pre-TD-self somewhere buried inside her but she strikes me as the kind of artist who will sacrifice her 'vision' for commercial success. That doesn't mean that she's not behind or doesn't like her 'commercial' outcome though.

Katy has been evolving sonically. Unless you'd like to say I Kissed a Girl, California Girls, and Roar sound the same.
I Kissed a Girl is pure pop rock, inspired by the likes of Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. California Girls is pure electro-pop, inspired by Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. Roar, and most of the material on PRISM (with some exceptions, like Birthday and International Smile), is closer sonically to Just Give Me a Reason and the like, a trend in Pop music started by Adele.
It is fair to say that Katy hasn't changed her music lyrically or thematically. It is also fair to say that her music doesn't stray far from the mainstream. However, that is a different thing than her sound not changing.

I like Katys sound and its very diverse but this song is a dick rider type of record that you wouldn't release without having released a #1 single right before it because you know it's going to underperform out of the gate.

No need to be condescending. I would consider these two to be pretty similar.

I'm surprising myself by really liking this.. Can't believe I've liked three singles in a row on an album I thought I hated :O Pretty soon it'll be time to give the album a third chance..

With that theory, it seems like Katy's been taking notes from BFF RiRi.

I'm sorry but California Girls is closer to All For You than any Lady Gaga or Kesha song. Tick Tock and California Gurls are sonically the same song. I guess CG reminds me of AFY in that it is a midtempo disco sounding record much like AFY was. However, the electopop influences reak of a Kesha type record and the vocal delivery is identical to tick tock. I still don't get the Lady Gaga reference though.

^ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthpop#21st_century_revivalThey're both in the electropop resurgence that happened in the 2010s. Lady Gaga essentially kicked off the mainstream popularity of this style of pop music, which Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and many, many others would adopt. At one point, pop charts were almost completely dominated by electro-pop. It's less common now, though ARTPOP's singles all fit in the genre easily, while Ellie Goulding's Burn also had some success. However, by and large pop music has largely changed to either more Urban influenced music, alternative crossovers, or the AC type of music which Adele made popular.

in the last 15 years have the pop trends been like this?
98-00: Very teen pop, that Nsync/Britney sound. 01-03: more bubblegum pop, little bit more acoustic, kinda like Michelle Branch or Hilary Duff 04-06: Kelly Clarkson pop/rock type thing - Kelly clarkson, Pink, Ashlee Simpson 07-08: Urban influence - like No One by Alicia Keys, songs all had that like 'clap' sound running throughout them 09-13: electropop like Lady Gaga Kesha 14: - what is it now?

Pop had way more Urban influence in 2006 than the pop rock sort of thing. Ashlee Simpson and Pink were basically non existent at Pop radio during that time period. Pink was more 2002-2003. Pop was very heavily dominated by Urban music from 2004-2007. However it was on the decline at Pop radio by 2007/2008...

I think 2014 is a transition. Literally any genre besides pure R&B has a fair shot right now. This is probably the best chr has ever been.
Dancepop: Neon Lights, Birthday... EDM: Red Lights, Animals... Hip Hop: Show Me, Headlights... Trap: Turn Down For What... Throwback/Soul: Happy, The Man Folk/Pop Folk: Counting Stars, Story of my Life... 2000's Rock: Ain't it Fun, She Ain't You Garage/Break: La La La Piano Ballad: All of Me, Say Something Pop Rock: She Looks So Perfect, Me And My Broken Heart New Wave: Sleeping With a Friend Indie Rock: Best Day of my Life s**t: 4x4, The Big Bang ;)
And get ready to throw Reggae, Disco, Rockabilly, Country, World Pop, and Deep House in there too if a few certain songs rise to success over the next few months.
Anything that isn't too similar to a past hit has a chance, so Birthday will be fine.
