I was hoping the performance would give this song a major boost. Such a letdown.

I think Tennis Court will keep gaining in the charts slowly but surely.

This deserves to be huge. Definitely the best song on the album next to "Buzzcut Season." I really wish "Bravado" made it onto the album. Such an amazing song and probably could've been a single down the road.

I honestly don't think there are anymore pop-friendly songs on the album. They chose the right 3 songs and they should stop after "Tennis Court" starts to fall.

Insofar as even Tennis Court doesn't seem to have momentum (at least not yet), I'm with you. However, I still think 400 Lux was a potential winner. Definitely the best beat on the album, and I maintain that "you buy me orange juice" would have been a thing.

This was never going to be an instant smash. There's just nothing instant about it. You need to hear it about 5 times before it starts to sink in - inherently not ideal for pop radio. It's also not really suited for summer airplay. Yet... I still have faith this will eventually see the top 15.

After a couple of listens one starts to think how good the song is, but it's not catchy at first listen. Fortunately she has two big hits under her belt, because other way this could end being big or radio ignoring like Phantogram's Fall in love (wich is the same kind of song that needs several listenings before start to like it)

It MUST be a single before they move on from this project.

Haha and it seems like the Alternative radio listeners on Pulse are not thrilled Are they ever? It sucks how most of the posters there think that "alternative" music started in 2000 when Lorde would have been what they would have played from the start of that format.

There were some comments earlier in the thread about how people can't relate to tennis courts, or it being an odd reference or something like that. What's so unsettling about tennis courts? Also G&G was the most alt-friendly single she had so far, and I don't feel like ranting about how much I hate the early days of the format and this so-called "revival" of it, but tl;dr. had she released it as the lead single, maybe we wouldn't all be hating on her and nu metal isn't that bad, plus no I do not think it started in 2000, I think it started in 1992-94 ;)

You sure? I don't think they're really "talking it up" at the tennis courts.

You sure? I don't think they're really "talking it up" at the tennis courts. No, it's about her finding balance between fame and her personal life. The tennis court in reference to the song is an actual tennis court that was near her middle school where she would go to hang with her friends. The "talking it up" she's referring to is literally her and her friends just sitting and talking. That's what I don't get about people saying the "tennis court" is too different for people to connect to. The tennis court she's talking about is just a place. The thing of which are occurring at said tennis court are extremely relatable. Many people have places where they would meet their friends to talk about life. Essentially the song is all about staying grounded and true to her real self through the newfound fame. Pretty cool, actually, as even though the song is more specific to fame, it can be taken to just staying true to yourself while growing up, which is extremely relatable to teens and young adults. It's one of the reasons I fell in love with the song and it continues to be one of my favorites from her.

Getting caught's half of the trip though, isn't it?
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah
And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them
I'm just sayin! Not all of her songs can be about her staying grounded while being famous -- though I'll admit there are elements of that in this song too.

Not all of her songs can be about her staying grounded while being famous -- though I'll admit there are elements of that in this song too. 1. "Getting caught" = being signed to a label 2. I've already explained what that means. That's the whole meaning of the song in one line. 3. Her friends, which are mostly boys as we know from several interviews, are doing crazy s**t and are confused to do with their friend becoming a star, which throws her off, but she loves them anyway This song is not about sex. Here, try this. And I've never heard "talk it up" referring to oral sex. Talking usually isn't going on during that action, lol.

I've always thought the "getting caught's half of the trip though, isn't it" line was referring to getting caught up in the fame, and how that's become almost expected from celebrities these days. It goes along with the staying grounded concept, and when followed by "I fall apart with all my heart" (the struggle of managing fame and "real life"), it's just always kinda made sense to me.
That's one of my favorite things about this song though. The lyrics are really vague, so it's open to tons of interpretations.
