Why is #SELFIE by the Chainsmokers blowing up so fast on radio? This song literally has everything working against it becoming a massive hit, and yet it got 68 adds this week.

It's the new novelty song of the moment. IMO, Eddie Amador did it better with "Psycho Ex Girlfriend" nearly 12 years ago.

So that you could inevitably make a thread asking why.

It kind of reminds me of the 90s when these two spoken word tracks were radio hits- Baz Luhrman-Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen Chris Rock-No Sex (In the Champagne Room)

Novelty songs*; they grab your attention quickly and lose it even faster. Really my only question is why radio ever got the bright idea to start playing these jokey songs in the first place, since so few of them reach listeners on the level that 'regular' songs do and aren't really intended to. Like, lots of people like those Allstate Mayhem commercials but no tv network is going to carve out a weekly block dedicated to playing them just to draw in more viewers, b/c obviously those commercials are not tv-show type entertainment. You are meant to chuckle for a minute or two and then promptly forget about it.
*Note that when I talk about 'novelty' here I am specifically referring to songs such as "#Selfie" or "The Fox" and not something like "Gangnam Style" or "Macarena", which are the more standard type of 'novelty' that we're used to in the sense that they are still aiming to be songs, and not some sort of parody.

In my opinion it got so many adds because:
1. It's dance-pop. The vocals may sound silly, but musically it's PERFECT for pop radio. If it was a different genre, I think more pop DJs would have ignored it. 2. The record label gave it an enormous push. They managed to successfully convince lots of people that the song was going to be a massive #1 hit. That means the pop DJs were confident to put the song in rotation immediately (this wouldn't happen with a real viral hit).

What is the difference between this and gangnam style and the macarena ? I get the difference between the fox however. The lyrics in "#Selfie" are a joke, or a parody of the teenage-selfie-out-on-the-town culture. People are just going to forget about this song and never think about it again. Same circumstances with "The Fox" (which was essentially poking fun at dance-pop music). On the other hand, "Gangnam Style" and "Macarena" are both more serious songs - in that they have a message, a purpose. "Gangnam Style" had actual lyrics that described the rich lifestyles of the residents of Gangnam District in Seoul. It has a legendary record of having the most video views in history, and will be remembered for years to come. "Macarena" is also a legendary song, as it is a standard track in everyone's wedding reception, dancehalls, etc. And it will be for decades. That is the difference between "#Selfie" and "Gangnam Style"/"Macarena."

It actually reminds me of Frank Zappa's 1980s novelty hit "Valley Girl", built around teenage slang of the time that he heard his daughter Moon Unit using.

#Selfie is nothing more than random morons talking over an unoriginal generic beat, with the latest fad as the title. There is no reason why any of us needs to be tortured by this trash.

There is nothing fun about the musical equivalent to water boarding. What's your definition of "fun" then? Cards with grandma? Dungeons and Dragons? Bethoven's 5th?

'#SELFIE' is an absolutely genius song. So many musicians I know are kicking themselves saying "WHY DID I NOT THINK OF THIS?"
Note: There is no sarcasm in the above statement.
