He and Katy looked in shock when he didn't win the Artist to Watch VMA... hell I was as well. :(

Well, to be honest he was the obvious choice, and if he wasn't the one, the only valid option was Charlie XCX.
I don't have nothing against Fifth Harmony, but let's be honest, girlbands use to have a short lifespan, so there's a big probability there's no artist to watch in a future (specially given the fact that they are not that successful right now)

I probably jinxed it. He'll laugh at me when he comes home.

This new artist awards are always the same that look really bad in retrospective because sometimes the mistakes are clamorous.
Maybe none of the five nominates have a career in five years, maybe the five have successful careers in five years, but the odds are totally against fifth harmony. The girls can sing, but generally successful girlbands (and they are not that successful) split in three - four years, there are a lot more probabilities that one of them find some success alone that the band is here in five years.
The curious thing is they are the less successful act of the five.
From the five acts i can only see Sam and Charlie being nominated at the best new artist cathegory of the grammys

Well, i read is a fan voting award, and that explains it all. I watch a poll about it, and it seems the only ones who really take the time to vote were Fifth harmony and 5SOS fans.

The Artist to Watch is fan-voted, so obviously the best is never gonna win. Fifth Harmony is good, but they won't last long. I have my doubts about Sam, but he was the most talented and arguably the best choice to win.

Surprised he was so shocked. I mean, he deserved it - he is #1 on three formats and about to be a major Grammy nominee, while 5H can't even launch their current, heavily hyped single - but he had to know social media was not going to be his friend.
The race was obviously 5SOS vs. 5H.

But anyway... in the end what matters is longevity and successful careers, and though an award is great, it will go to a shelf.

Generally this type of acts have at least big sales the first week. In fact, in theory 5SOS are more popular than then, but in every poll i watched 5H were the ones with more votes Sam and Charlie probably will get their opportunity at the Grammys. Anyway, the grammys have some dubious best new artist choices in the past too

She's involved in two of the year's top pop songs (it wouldn't shock me if either landed some key Grammy nominations), but she doesn't necessarily present herself in the most-Grammy friendly way (people who win Grammys don't often refer to their album as "pussy pink"). So it'll be interesting to see if talent can trump persona.

I don't know, this year Sam is the only obvious choice for that cathegory of the grammys, with big sales and good reviews of the album.
There are a lot of new people getting some success on the charts, but i can't think in nobody who is an obvious choice. Some people on alternative have good songs and there are always a less poppy nominee.
And Charlie's album was released last year (with very little fanfare) so i don't know if it match the criteria either. Anyway she is talented and it's getting success, so there's the possibility.
Probably a teen act will be nominated too, even if it's only to draw some attention from the younger viewers (even if the backlash is inmense after they don't win the prize like what happened when Bieber lost)

From Billboard.com:
Adult Pop Songs *** No. 1 (1 week)*** "Stay With Me" Sam Smith Another week, another chart topped for Sam Smith's "Stay With Me," as the ballad lifts 2-1 on Billboard's Adult Pop Songs airplay chart. It's the latest conquest for the track, which leads Pop Songs for a second week and Adult Contemporary for a third week. Notably, topping the three charts simultaneously is a rare achievement, one which puts "Stay" in lofty company. The last song to lead Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs and AC at the same time? Fellow British singer/songwriter Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" the weeks of July 2 and 9, 2011. ("Deep" went on to become the Billboard Hot 100's top song of 2011.) Only one other hit has so tripled up at No. 1 (in the 18 years in which all three charts have coexisted): Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me," for five weeks in 1996.

It entered at 50 on Urban chart (with a healthy bullet), reached peak at 8 on Rythmic and is still at 6 (it peaked at 5) on Urban Ac. If it's able to climb on the urban chart the longevity on the billboard hot 100 could be amazing

From Billboard:
Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" retreats 4-5 (after climbing to a No. 2 peak). It posts a fourth week at No. 1 on Radio Songs (152 million, down 7 percent).

I think Thinking bout you was top 10 on rythmic, top 5 on Urban and top 15 in Urban AC. But if we are going to the gay thing, i think Frank never said he is gay. I doubt Stay with me will go much further in the urban chart, but it's nice it was able to crack the top 50

Didn't Sam basically do what Frank did and never actually say "gay" but just say his song/songs/album were about a guy? Or has Sam since used "gay" in relation to himself?

Sam never "came out" as he was already out essentially. He just highlighted his sexuality during an interview and the whole world took it as him "coming out".

No, Sam said the album was about falling for a man who didn't love him back. As Envoirment said, Sam was basically out on social media before being famous, but to be fair, press is able to ignore that quite easily. Actor Luke Evans came out in interviews in the UK, and he came back to the closet when he moved to hollywood, and the press never address the matter, so he is basically "straight" now dating his publicist (how Rock Hudson of him). When Leave your lover video was released, even with the obvious message, press was asking him if he was dating the female model on the video because they were see together (because they are friends) and he denied. A couple of days after he made the official coming out. What i want to say with this is that even it was something known, he could avoid the coming out without a problem. Yes it would be rumours, but if an artist is profitable, all press (wich is not gossip magazines, and sometimes even gossip magazines) collaborate fully with you staying in the closet. A lot of PR relationships (with an obvious gay angle) are fully covered as the romance of the millenium on the press, no matter how disinteresed in each other the couple look. Frank Ocean basically said that his first love was a man, and he did it because (and that's a big difference with Sam, wich lyrics are obviously destined to appeal to everybody) he used masculine pronoums in a good buch of songs of Channel Ocean. Some people think he is gay, some that he is bisexual, some that the whole letter was a publicity stunt, wich frankly doesn't make sense because there was a lot of buzz around his album before, and the move was unprecedent and quite commercially risky for an R&B singer with links on hip hop

Fourth format number one. Not bad for a debut single, and peak at 5 on Rythmic, and maybe it reach top 40 on Urban too.
It's nearer to recover number one on AC. I was surprised at how fast it lost it (i think it was only two weeks number one there) because i thought it will be there for a very very long time, the song is perfect for that format. Maybe it climbed too fast there

I don't know if he performed this somewhere but suddenly it's in the top 10 of itunes again CBS Sunday Morning had a piece on him this morning (they played this, "Restart," the "Latch" acoustic version, and he and Jimmy Napes talked about/played a bit of "I'm Not The Only One"); that might be why - I know Sara Bareilles saw a sales increase after she was on as well.

Curious, because I'm not the only one had a clear increase in sales, but Stay with me literally exploded, from 26 to 7
