I don't get it. Why send a pop song to Urban radio hoping for pop radio support after we saw pop is not going to touch anything Bey releases anyway? We were like 3 singles in when they picked this song. If pop wanted to jump on the Beyonce bandwagon, they've had plenty of opportunities. Cutting out Urban Radio support in the hopes of pop radio airplay makes no sense as a strategy to me.

I know! This has been one of the worst eras I have ever seen at radio. Why the f**k are they sending a pop song to Urban and then pulling the pop adds date for it? Why not just release all the Urban songs to Urban and get some more hits. "Rocket," "Blow," ANYTHING!
Even with 4, they had the common sense to at least cater to Urban and UAC. This is downright embarrassing, I don't care how well the album sold.

Yeah, she had an album on her hands that could have been heralded as a masterful effort with an enormous, memorable success story. Instead all that people will remember was the surprise release. A total shame--there are several stellar tracks that could have become great additions to her collection of hits.

Strangely enough since Bey already had the videos for this album done. Might as well release Blow or No Angel to Urban/Rhythm/UAC.

This is probably an unpopular opinion on a forum as focused on radio updates as Pulse but I don't think the lack of radio hits is going to limit how this era is looked at in the future. Granted, if she had gotten the 5 top 10 hits she deserved off this album it would've been an even bigger milestone but just because the singles aren't getting high peaks on charts, doesn't mean people won't remember them.
Drunk In Love and Partition are both huge and are definitely going to be classics in her catalogue. You could easily make the same argument for Flawless and even Blow. Would it have been a bigger #moment if all those songs were radio smashes? Yes, but I think it's shortsighted to act like the songs from this era didn't make a considerable impact on the listening public.

I'm not clamoring for high radio peaks exactly, and I'll give you Drunk In Love, but Partition will likely get short-shrifted in the future because it wasn't really given the chance to vie for classic status. It's not really peaks I'm lamenting so much as...saturation. She produced something remarkable and delivered it flawlessly, then sort of let it cool. I don't expect people to forget she released the album, but I don't think the album itself will eclipse the memory of its release.

While I think how this album is viewed in near future won't be looked down on, but the label/management had a great opportunity to extend her hits on the urban format. I am utterly shocked that the Drake song did not see a release and the album release feels so "came and went" when it didn't have to be that way. I expected many songs to be thrown on the urban, urban AC and rhythmic. I get if she doesn't want to promote but sending out songs shouldn't be an issue.

I think the "surprise release" is going to overshadow the actual material.

I don't expect people to forget she released the album, but I don't think the album itself will eclipse the memory of its release. I don't know, I just feel like everything from the Monica Lewinksy line (and pretty much every lyric to Partition) to the Blow video to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's interpolation on Flawless have all been kind of etched into the pop culture of 2014. Like I said in the Partition thread a while back, that song is going to be looked at as SO much bigger than it was on radio/the charts. From the moment the album dropped to now, people have not stopped talking about it and while obviously a promo blitz would've taken it to the next level, the impact it's had is far bigger than some long-lasting technical hits from her contemporaries imo. Could a proper release and traditional release format have made them even bigger and made this one of her biggest eras to date? Absolutely. But I think she just genuinely does not give a single s**t about the charts or radio and that's with or without success. She said it in 2011 but people kind of looked at it like a copout since 4 wasn't a super commercial album but I think it holds true just as much now that she's sitting on a bunch of hits, I think she's beyond caring even when she has the material. I completely understand where you're coming from but I disagree with you because to me, it's obvious that the magnitude of this release, from the element of surprise to the bold creative decisions made to the visuals which have already become part of her legacy, has not been dulled by the messiness of the singles and her/the label's general lack of interest in churning out a bunch of big hits. I don't think this will ever be diluted to being just a blip in her career when she released a surprise album.
