I'm a little eh on this album as well. There are some good songs definitely, but nothing really grabbed my attention on the first listen. I really like "Sugar" and "My Heart Is Open" though. Ok I'm definitely digging these two a lot now. I'll probably try to revisit some of the others later ("Feelings" and "Leaving California" specifically).

I'm actually enjoying this more than Overexposed. Besides the singles I'm really loving "Coming Back For You", "Feelings", "Sugar" and "It Was Always You".

Yeah the album is weak. I don't see any of the future singles being more than Top 20 (moderate) hits at best.

Sugar and Feelings are the clear standouts. Ideally, the singles will go..
03. It Was Always You 04. Sugar 05. Feelings
Although either Sugar or Feelings will remain unreleased in favor of the snoozefest that is the Gwen ballad.

"Sugar" is slated to be the third single, but yeah, I can't see them missing the opportunity to perform the Gwen duet sometime on the upcoming season "The Voice." It'll, presumably, go to Top 10 on iTunes and become a single.

Nope. All members are involved and fully present, whether or not they sound that way. This is more evident in their live performances. Adam solo would be no different than Maroon 5 over the last couple albums. It's not like he can go EVEN poppier - they've even collaborated with a rapper, LOL. The other members don't have any writing credits on this album and there's a host of producers. Just like you would see on a solo album. The band members may legitimately play live during a concert but so does a pro-touring band that have been out with a solo artist for many years....see most country solo acts. I guess my point is this...just because Adam has remained friends with them and they tour together doesn't necessarily mean that in the studio they contribute much to the songs or sounds except for playing the instruments - which is what you also get when you hire session musicians to come in and play on the album. I think the concept of using the term "band" with this group is getting a little iffy - just like I said with Daughtry. I don't see much difference.

^I agree. James used to co-write heavily with Adam and I was shocked to see that he didn't contribute lyrically to a single song on the new album.

Nor did he co-produce a song either which was weird too. It does seem that the production is going more towards the "digital" side with less live instrumentation.

As long as I like the songs, I don't care who produced, wrote, whatever.

So. I love this album.
It's been a long time since I've fallen in love with Maroon 5 again. Oh, and Maps is one of the weakest songs on the album for me.

This album is my least favorite from them, I only like a few tracks (which 2/3 of them are the singles so...)

I like this album a lot...but I can kind of a M5 stan. I think I am actually liking it more than Overexposed, although Maps is probably their weakest lead single, as well as one of the weaker songs on the album. An acceptable intro I suppose. Animals is much better.

Ok so I am going to do a track by tracking rating/review.
Maps Good song, not great. After living with it for a while I find it to be their weakest effort as far as lead singles go. 8/10
Animals This should be a good second single. It knocks, it's catchy and infectious, and Adam's vocals sound tight, with lots of falsetto (as well as much of the rest of the album). 9/10
It Was Always You One of my favorites on the album. This song is anthemic. Hopefully it will be a single somewhere along the way, even though it was a promo already. 10/10
Unkiss Me Lyrically I find the phrase "unkiss me, untouch me" a little strange, but this sounds like a potential single. I like this more than I typically like Maroon 5 ballads, which I often find a bit dreary. This one has more of a beat, and a definite R&B bent. 9/10
Sugar Extremely catchy, I think someone said it's slated to be the third single. Should work, but I think it should be Unkiss Me, so they can have a ballad out in the winter months. This track seems to be kissing cousins with Birthday. hmm... 10/10, subtract one point for sounding like Birthday, but add a half point for being much better than Birthday. 9.5/10
Leaving California The beginning of what I consider to be the low point of the album. The three songs in the middle are underwhelming to me. This song is fine, nothing special, inoffensive. 8/10
In Your Pocket I get the feeling this whole song sprang from the phrase "Show me yours and I'll show you mine." ehh... 7/10
New Love It's ok. Don't have much to say about it. 7/10
Coming Back For You This is one of my definite favorites, this is the point where the album picks back up for me. I love how this is sort of in cut time or something, with the shift back and forth from double time to half time, if that makes sense. Subtract a half point for Adam's voice being so processed it sounds like an instrument on the bridge. 9.5/10
Feelings As funky as they get. Great song. 10/10
My Heart Is Open This one's growing on me, but a pretty big disappointment in the lyric department. Both Gwen and Adam are lyricists...and the only chorus they could muster was yeah yeah yeah? no no no... That said it will probably get performed on the voice and be a huge hit. 7/10
Shoot Love A good album ending type of track. 8/10
Sex and Candy I didn't think I would like this. I do. A lot. 10/10
The Adam Levine solo song is fine, but I will omit it for the purpose of the review. So if I average all of those ratings, it is an 86%. Solid B. I'm not sure if someone asked me about it if I would say B (maybe A- for the greatness of some of my favorites).
Overall, the album is pretty great, with that 3 song lull in the middle that I find forgettable. Perhaps those tracks will grow on me in the future.

The 3 week sales total is 278,000 + 24-27k next week according to HITS = 302-305,000
Not bad...

I'm starting to really like "Leaving California" now. It's been popping up on my shuffle a lot. The only thing that bothers me about that is the awkward ending. It sounds like it's about to go into a bridge, but then it just fades into an ending lol. I'd like to see that as a single. Maybe fifth since "Sugar" is third (confirmed) and "It Was Always You" should be next. Then there wouldn't be a upbeat one outside of "Maps".... They kinda screwed themselves over with all of the down and mid-tempos on the album.

As we found out tonight, a new song, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt," is out in a couple weeks. Tour opener Nick Gardner may be involved in its creation - he tweeted out the title this evening. No word yet whether it's for a re-release (my suspicion - they'd effectively do what OneRepublic did last year) or a new album, but I did notice a few new-looking titles on BMI: "Forgive Me" (Levine/Ryan Tedder/Noel Zancanella) "Heat Of The Moment" or "Moment" (Levine) "Keep Keeping Me Waiting" (Carmichael, Levine) "She Smiles So Sad" (Chris McFadden - not sure who he is, but he appears to have unreleased credits for Xtina, Coldplay, MB20, and GGD, so I suspect it's old?) "Let It Go" (Levine) (hot Frozen cover)

I just don't understand why they keep leaving these massive songs as album tracks. (Not that they're hurting for hits, but its getting to be frustrating as a fan)

10/3 Billboard 200:
V - Maroon 5 ( 1,034,000) = pure album sales.
Their label has not certified the album with the RIAA nor have they certified any singles!

For such a bland album it's sure sold pretty well. Kudos to them.

I'm really surprised they just through out a regular greatest hits like this . With voice promo and 2 or 3 singles it could've sold more than 500k potentially . But releasing it like this it ll get no traction

I don't see the Singles set on US iTunes, but given that they still have shows on their current tour through next year, I'd assume they didn't want to fill the remaining time with promo slots.
My question is why they only put 12 songs there. It's definitely all hits, but they could easily have added 3 more singles.

They're currently in talks for Superbowl 50 Halftime Show. I really hope not. There are way more better choices.

Hmm if they perform, I wonder if they're going to push out another single since "Feelings" completely flopped.

With their network connections, it was always a possibility.
They also do have a large catalog to dig into.

Normally M5 wouldn't be a bad choice at all precisely b/c of their deep catalog, but them scoring Super Bowl 50 would be kind of surprising. I'd expect the SB to get the biggest star possible for such a milestone year (i.e. Maroon 5 at the height of Overexposed would have made sense; Maroon 5 coming off the ok but not overwhelmingly successful V is not so exciting). But supposedly Bruno was asked to 'curate' the show, thus inviting others to perform doesn't necessarily contradict or refute that. Maybe it will end up being more of an ensemble cast with several stars than one main performer with a featured act.
