Why do I start what I can't finish?

That's not why I hate this song. I don't give a damn about labels for this. I hate this because it portrays the struggle of gaining popularity as an upbeat, carefree tune with cheesy lyrics that don't reflect the pain and agony of the struggle as a whole. It's all "I wish I could be like the cool kids, they seem to fit in" but it seems like they're poser elitists, trying to seem like they're better than everyone because they weren't these "cool kids", and the amount of cliches in the lyrics makes me seem like they don't know what it actually is like to want to be like the cool kids, they just took whatever they found from generic teenager movies and turned it into a song. Wanting to be a cool kids is not that simple, it's more than just some breezy pop song. It's about extreme self-loathing and the feeling of hopelessness. It's about chasing a path that's leading nowhere. It's about realizing how much you've f**ked up and how that damage can not be undone. It's about wanting to die for your sins and hoping that maybe, just maybe, you can finally be accepted by them and you'll get the sex and the weed and the booze that you wanted all along. It's about how it truly f**ks up your life, hoping to gain something that you won't ever gain. Not "I wish that I could be like the cool kids, 'cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in." And as someone who deals with this s**t every day, I cannot tell you how much this song offends me. I'm sorry you are struggling with issues each day. And heck, yes this could be what they are talking about in this song. But honestly, I don't see it that way. I see it as a decent pop rock song by a talented group of siblings who are actually talented enough to write and play their own music, something in short supply these days for the most part, with a few exceptions of course. I don't know what their definition of "cool" means, but I'm not sure it's as dark as you are making it. Yes, it could give people bad ideas, but personally, I have bigger issues with songs that blatantly glorify sex and drugs, or even songs about people that gloat about how bad their relationships are going (yes I'm talking about you Taylor!), than this one. My point is - this song doesn't represent the message at all.

My point is - this song doesn't represent the message at all. I can see the message clearly, and IMO, it's not how the message is portrayed, but how the tone of the message contrasts so much with the tone of the song. It's not about how people struggle with popularity: it's how people struggle to want to be the best they can be. Everyone wants to be successful and be proud of what they accomplish. They want everyone to know how successful they are. Whereas in the instrumental, it's about someone who's showing a sort of complacency, like he or she is happy wherever they are, when in fact, she wants to be the best she can be. EDIT: And tbh, you shouldn't feel offended about the message of the song because it isn't about envy: it's about motivation.

It's great to see a group of talented siblings get so much recognition on all genre charts.
I think the song gets its message across and probly one of the many reasons it's so popular among the young crowd as well as the older crowd. Everyone can relate to the lyrics. They could've chosen a few other subjects to tackle in the song. Not only our peers, but some parents put alot of pressure on the teens to be like the "Cool Kids" too. The line about the cool kids driving in fast cars, but not knowing where they are going is so very true.

If you don't like a song, why do you consistently engage is discussing it?

That's what I always say.
Anyways, this song now has a new music video:
I liked the simplicity of the first one, but I guess this version makes the song feel a bit more personal. Plus, there's a new mix I think that is used in this.

Yeah, the bass is definitely heavier in the new video and the vocals seem more... raw? There's also an echoing electric guitar strum in the second verse that isn't in the original version. I like the other video better, but this one is good too. (I also prefer the original mix, but again, this version is good too.)
God, I love this song. Just watching this new video reminds me how much I love it. So glad it has finally turned into a little hit nearly a full year after I discovered it through Free Single of the Week on iTunes.

If you don't like a song, why do you consistently engage is discussing it? Yes, because I can only talk about things I like and because I don't like this song I should not speak ill of it just because you are a fan of it. What a great argument.

You can comment on disliking a song, I'm not saying you can't. But when you do it over and over and over again, that's when it starts to border on the side of trolling.

I too am really annoyed with this song. When I hear the lyrics, I think of those people who think they are superior to "cool kids" and automatically dislike anyone popular. They hate the star football player, even though the guy is actually extremely nice. They hate all cheerleaders, even though most of the cheer team isn't snotty at all.
In reality, the reason these kids aren't cool is because they are antisocial and a pain to be around.
The second verse just kills me. It's the most ironic thing ever. They are critisizing cool kids for not seeing their pain and problems, while simultaneously painting the cool kids' life as perfect. In reality, even the cool kids have problems. Nobody has a perfect life.

It is, but I understand why you might not have known - this is the only place I can find it online. They removed the fade at the end too and Sydney adds another "like the cool kids..." in the last couple bars.

Late to the party, but I really like this song. I've obviously only heard it for the first few times recently, but the first artist I compared Sydney's voice to was Taylor Swift. Sydney's phrasing and tone sounds somewhat like Swift's, especially in the first verse where she sings "She says I'm walkin' in a straight line. That's not really her style". It just has this airy, breathy sound to it like Taylor has, and I really like that. I'm not saying that Sydney sounds EXACTLY like Taylor or anything like that, but to me there are some clear similarities in their vocal deliveries.

The breakout single of the year! it's on every music chart. Except rap and Country...oh ,wait a minute, it is on the HOT 100, now that I think about it. They finally released that version with an outro that Rick Dees plays on his Hot Adult radio countdown show. I dare say the mid break even sounds more Indie than before. I like the way new video starts off. It really seems to go with the lyrics, but I don't really like it when it goes all poppy towards the end. All the sudden these kids are dancing and taking selfies. It doesn't really fit the tempo of the song. Did thier wish to become "cool" come true towards the end or did they realize that just being themsleves is "cool" enough?

I saw them on Fuse Top 20 Countdown yesterday in an interview and the song almost didn't make it on the album. Fans demanded them to release it as a single and even Echosmith themselves were surprised how they like "Cook Kids". The Los Angeles natives reveal how their unexpected hit was actually "chosen" by fans to become a singleHaving spent an impressive eight weeks on Top 20 Countdown, Echosmith's "Cool Kids" has clearly become a fan favorite. Despite being the indiepop band's breakout hit, the single was nearly left off of their debut album, Talking Dreams.
"That song was one of those songs that took months to write. Some songs take two hours, some don't—and that one was one that didn't," lead vocalist Sydney Sierota explained. "The song related to all of us so much personally, and everybody has that desire, at some point, to fit in or be like somebody else. We just really wanted that song to be perfect, and we kept going back to the lyrics over and over and over again, really tried to make sure that it was right because it was such an important song to us."
The sleeper hit, about a boy and a girl who want to fit in with the cool crowd, resonated so much with fans that Echosmith made the song their debut single. Rather than a decision made by "some people in big suits," it was something that fans across the country seemed to naturally agree upon.www.fuse.tv/videos/2014/09/top-20-echosmith-interview

That's great news and great interview. That's also how it used to be in the good old days. The band would pick thier singles. Not the other way around. Those people in the big suits have the tendency of picking the worst single that sounds like everything else on the radio.

When I first listened to the song, I was really hoping the bridge was going to be about how the guy and the girl referenced in the verses finally got to hang out with the "cool kids," only to find themselves dead in a drunk driving accident. The tone of the last chorus would be so much eerier. I was so sure the song was heading in that direction.
Turns out... there are no lyrics in the bridge. It's kind of a bummer. Makes the song fall flat for me.

This chick's voice literally sounds like Ursula stole Katy Perry and Taylor Swift's voices and combined them in some kind of pop star laboratory. Seriously, I can't get over how much she sounds like a mash up of those two voices.
Anyways I'm finding this extremely addictive at the moment, and I think some of you guys are reading way too much into this and trying to make it more than it is.
