I'm surprised St. Louis has spun it so much. The radio stations there are the worst I've ever heard. It's definitely indicative of the bro-country epidemic as far as that goes. Good for them though in this one instance, lol. Nice to see Wichita giving it a couple spins too. Country radio in Kansas City & Wichita (and any of the small stations in between) > Like I said, I enjoy the song, but if there ever was a bro country song sung by a female (or in this case two females) this is it. Again, I enjoy it, but this sounds much more "bro country" than anything either of these two beautiful and talented ladies have ever released. And it's really not even close. I'll admit I'm not nearly as keen on this track as I wish I was given that I'm a big fan of both of these ladies. That said, like jhomes87 stated, I don't find this to be equivalent to bro-country in the slightest. I don't like the production on this particularly well because of the rockish vibe it has (compared to the more neo-traditional style that I prefer), but there's really nothing lyrically and sonically about this that puts it in the same heap as the "bro-country" imo.

I feel like everyone is so quick to label something "bro-country". Mentioning a truck or booze once doesn't makes a song "bro". These topics can be covered or mentioned without being lyrically poor, or lacking a story (think Drunk on a Plane or I Drive Your Truck). Personally, I'm glad to hear some females make a feel good tune, one that's more ear candy. I've enjoyed a lot of Male songs covering simple topics like this song, so I'm certainly not going to knock the ladies for making one as well.

I like this song a lot but it's hard to keep up with if the live performance is any indication.

What I'm confused by is why so many people had expectations of this song having meaning or a message. When the tracklisting for the album was revealed (which included this song), Miranda's Associated Press interview was also released at the same time and it included her commentary on how this is a "rockin' song" that's "in your face."
I mean, I had higher expectations for this song, but they didn't include the hopes that this song would bring "nourishment" (so-to-speak) to the subjectivity of today's era of Country radio, lol.

I wasn't expecting anything serious from what Miranda had said before it was revealed. I don't know exactly WHAT I was expecting though.

Defending a song by suggesting that someone should have had lower expectations is not a compelling defense. And the common response to criticism of up-tempo tracks that not every song has to have depth is often a response to an argument that's not being made. While I personally like the song well enough vocally and sonically, I do think it falls short lyrically, particularly when stacked against the catalogues of artists like Carrie and Miranda. It's not that character development is sacrificed for clever lyrics. Neither is present in this song. And there's even a certain repetitiveness to the verses which I can usually excuse in a chorus. Personally, I think the lyrics are so weak that they bring down the stronger elements in the song. And I can start a long list of "rockin'", "in your face" songs where that's not the case.

I myself even admitted that I had higher expectations for the song.

I feel like this song seems unfinished with the way the it ends so abruptly, almost as if there's a missing third verse and bridge that could've benefited the finished product. Instead, as it stands now, the song seems incomplete to me and unnecessarily short, which is a shame because the story set up by the lyrics (runaway bridge who gets picked up by another girl and they head out on an impromptu road-trip) is a promising concept.

I do like the song but in comparison to Miranda's previous single "Automatic", it feels underwhelming. It'll definitely be a hit and I'm hoping that it'll push her to her best first week album sales.

While this isn't great lyrically, the vocals and production actually make it up for where this song falls short for me.
I think Carrie injects the vocal power, but Miranda's phrasing is more compelling.
The harmony is great, and while there is a lot going on with the production, it never really gets in the way for me.
IMO, Miranda and Carrie have both had plenty of songs that are far more overproduced than "Somethin' Bad."
My only complaint is that this seems underwhelming in comparison to Miranda's usually stellar material, but I do enjoy this quite a bit.

This is basically the same exact chart run that "Remind Me" and "Highway Don't Care" had. "Somethin' Bad" flies 48-31 on Billboard, with a gain of 2.55 million. I had it projected at around 3.9 million, and it beat that by a full 500k (SB checks in with 4.4 million). I did allow for some wiggle room in my projections, as the songs projected to land in the 31-35 spots were all projecting close to the same number.

I guess we can look at the positive side of people's high expectations of a getting a "deeper" song - it means these two ladies have a reputation of releasing quality songs. It will be kinda sad if mediocre songs are considered a norm from them and SB can be rated as "great" compared to the rest of their catalog! lol

The performance last night was much better than the Billboard Awards. It seemed that they fixed any mistakes from that first time.

I just heard this song for the first time. Searched it out on youtube because I was curious. I listened to the audioclip only (not the live recordings). I thought it would be a rocking tune but this isn't what I expected. I thought it was a let down and Carrie doesn't add anything to it. Miranda simply put Carrie on it to generate some buzz for her album. Not that she needs it but I just see this as a marketing ploy. I really like both ladies so this was just a miss for me. Bottom line - the song is weak.

The performance at the CMTs last night was absolutely killer. They were fantastic and they fixed all of the kinks that were in the Billboard Award performance. This song is back in the Top 20 on iTunes all-genre, too. This'll go platinum easily.

A 'Bad' drop on the mongrel chart: #5 to #25.

After all, something like "Mama's Broken Heart" was able to sell about 1.7 million, and I can see "Somethin' Bad" being even bigger, especially given that it also has Carrie Underwood on it and it's being released so early in the album era (instead of a year later like MBH).

Just heard this on the radio for the first time. This song is aptly titled. Why is it most superstar duets don't live up to the hype - regardless of the genre (Tim/Kenny - Feel Like A Rockstar, Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey - When You Believe, etc.) Admittedly some are good. This is not one of them, in my opinion.

Some superstar duets, and especially at top 40 radio back in the eighties were downright superb, and certainly far superior compare to what you'd hear today at top 40 radio.
Some country duets are masterpieces and have been for decades, but the stinkers have been really atrocious, not including this one, which is just a rowdy tear-it-up flamethrowin' tune plain and simple, and nothing more.

This song has actually grown on me since first listen. Where I never disliked it, I was underwhelmed. Last nights performance helped, but what really made it click for me was hearing it on the radio tonight, as some friends and I were driving down the highway, windows down (naturally). It's fun and perfect for radio. Should be a big summer hit on radio.

I agree that this is somewhat underwhelming, but I like it a whole lot more within the context of the album. It works better there than as a stand-alone single, I think. I completely understand why they released it, and agree that it was the right second single. It should be a huge radio hit, which will then set up the less radio friendly follow ups nicely after two big radio hits.

This song sounds pretty good. They girls sound good together. I would like to listen to it on radio. If I wanted to hear a pop or rock song. Which I don't. Just another "country" song for me to skip over as I'm channel surfing through my "country" stations that I can pick up on my radio. *sigh* (And I do mean it when I say that they sound good together. This is just not my kind of music.)

I'd love to see this become a multi-week #1. I feel like it could really happen if Sony plays the cards right. It's nearly Top 30 already (and without an adds date, too), right?
