How many artists have been signed to a label, but never actually released anything for it?
Some of the ones I know of:
* Before "The One in the Middle", Sarah Johns was on Show Dog for a very short time.
* Little Big Town were on Mercury ca. 2001. Although they never released anything, they sang backing vocals on Collin Raye's Can't Back Down, which credited them as appearing courtesy of Mercury Nashville if I'm not mistaken.
* Jerrod Niemann was also on Mercury for a time before he signed to Category 5.
* Morgane Hayes (writer of "Don't Forget to Remember Me") apparently had a deal with BNA at one point.
* Jimmy Yeary (Shenandoah, The Isaacs) was on Atlantic, but they closed before he could release anything.
* Jerry Kilgore ("Love Trip") was on Asylum ca. 1996 but never put anything out. I found mention of this in Billboard and on an ad for the label in New Country magazine.
* Keith Sewell was on Rising Tide Records but apparently didn't put anything out before their single year in business.
* A 1995 Christmas album by Giant Records includes songs by Laura Vida and Chad Mullins, neither of whom appear to have had any actual singles.
* Giant had a whole passel of artists who had never released anything when they closed in 2001: Johnny Staats Project, Adam Hughes & Sarah Majors, Liz Byler, Keith Harling, Joe Nichols, and Christy Sutherland.
* Neal McCoy signed to an independent label called SEA in 2003, but they closed before he could release anything.
* Lyric Street also had a couple obscure signees early on: a 17-year-old named Nate Barrett, a comedian named Shane Caldwell, and Dave Wilson. None of them apparently ever put anything out, but Dave's wife, Kortney Wilson (Kayle), charted two singles and wrote Ryan Tyler's "Run, Run, Run".
* One of the most baffling for me is Angela Hacker. She won Nashville Star and put out a disc of cover songs/demos for Warner, and appeared on two Cowboy Troy songs, but had no "real" album or any singles.
* Anyone know if some of the lesser DreamWorks artists (Michelle Poe, Dan Colehour, Rick Ferrell, Tori Baxley, etc.) had any singles? I know Danielle Peck never released anything for the brief time she was on DreamWorks, and she got instantly carried over to Big Machine.

Ella Mae Bowen was signed to Big Machine and never released anything aside from contributing a cover of "Holding Out for a Hero" for the Footloose soundtrack in 2011.

^ Melissa Peterman never released anything for Big Machine either, did she?
Curb also sat on Martin Ramey for a while without ever releasing anything from them if I'm not mistaken.
Thought of another one: When Virgin Nashville closed, their entire roster was moved to Capitol. Clay Davidson made the move to Capitol, but for some reason, he never did anything with Capitol.

I remember listening to quite a few interviews years ago now about her being really excited about this and how she was going to get to do her first comedy album. I believe it was actually recorded and obviously never released.

BMLG also had Jackie Lee signed to Republic Nashville for a good while and he never released anything. He got dropped and then he signed with Broken Bow just a few months ago, but they haven't released anything from him yet either.

Chad Austin was on both Asylum and Broken Bow, but he never released anything for the latter. He's now in Heartland.
Robert Lee and Fidel Hernandez never released anything for BBR either as far as I can tell.

He recorded a bunch of music for them and there was even a Rate The Music survey of 4-5 songs for Jackie but Republic never moved forward after that.

Didn't Rebecca Lynn Howard sign to Show-Dog after she left Arista? I recall only one single but no album. Then she moved on to Saguaro to release No Rules.

I remember listening to quite a few interviews years ago now about her being really excited about this and how she was going to get to do her first comedy album. I believe it was actually recorded and obviously never released. I know her, and yeah, nothing ever came from that. I have been annoying her for years about the album, and though she would never really say why the album was not released, I assume she and the label heads disagreed over what she should record. About four years ago now, they were almost ready to release it - she even gave fans some timeframes. They were originally planning to record the album before an audience, but then they recorded it in-studio. The material recorded, for reasons unknown, was ultimately scrapped. About two years ago, she had two stand-up dates scheduled for her to record the album before an audience - like they were originally planning. Those dates were postponed, then rescheduled, then when they did happen, the performances were recorded but the album was never released. She was signed around the time she was hosting The Singing Bee, appearing regularly at CMT functions, touring with Reba, etc. and they would've wanted to capitalize on that bond with country audiences. As more and more time passed, though, they probably grew less and less interested in releasing anything. I think they could have been onto something, and I would have loved to hear what she had recorded, but I'm totally biased because I think she's awesome anyway.

Ten Pound Hammer I have some info on a few of the artists you mentioned. Keith Harling did release his second album on Giant. It was titled ' Bring It On' and the title track was his only single with Giant. It reached #52. Dave Wilson didn't release anything while with Lyric Street though his wife Kortney did. They later teamed up as a duo here in Canada. Rick Ferrell did release one single on Dreamworks. It was to be from his debut album titled ' Different Point Of View'. I have a copy of it though it remains unreleased. Tori Baxley released a single called "Half A Man" just a few weeks before DreamWorks closed. I got a copy on iTunes but I'm not sure it's still on there. Martin Ramey have released two singles since signing to Curb. Their first was "Twisted" and their second was "I Want You To Want Me". Both apparently had add dates but nothing came from either single.
Adding some myself Shel was signed to Republic Nashville a few years back and they just disappeared from the roster one day. Jedd Hughes after being dropped from MCA Nashville moved to Capitol Nashville and did nothing of interest until exiting a few years later. Still a huge missed opportunity I think. Brandon Kinney was also signed to Capitol Nashville and they never released anything with him before he went independent. Christian Kane was on Columbia Nashville for a short time around 2008 I believe. Jordyn Shellhart was signed to Columbia Nashville /SeaGayle and never released anything. Lauren Lucas was signed to RCA Nashville at one point before moving to Warner Bros. where she released two singles. Shame she never took off. Kristy Lee Cook was signed to Arista Nashville around 2004 or 2005. She was dropped and later resigned after competing on American Idol. SHeDAISY were signed to RCA Nashville back in 1989, they were known as The Osborn Sisters back then but they never released anything. Angela Wolff, Baylie Brown, Regie Hamm & Judson Spence were also signed to Universal-South and as far as I can tell never released anything while there. Deanna Cox was signed to Warner Bros. Nashville. I can't find any info about her. The Sky Kings were signed to RCA Nashville and never released anything before moving to Warner Bros. Nashville and basically doing the same thing. Kree Harrison was signed to Lyric Street records around 2001. She never released anything.

Whoops, copypaste fail. I knew Harling did stuff for Giant.
ETA: I found an article from 2001 mentioning that Jason Aldean was, in fact, signed to Capitol for a short time in 2001. He never put anything out, though.

The Drew Davis Band were signed to Neal McCoy's label 903 Music but never got a chance to release anything because of the label closing in May of 2007. I believe they were then transferred to Lofton Creek afterwards but I'm not 100% positive if they signed with Lofton Creek or they were in fact switched over.

^ I remember being surprised that "Back There All the Time" got released twice. WATZ played it a lot from the first release in 2005, and then played it again for the 2008 rerelease on Lofton Creek. Great song.

Great song. I agree. Great song. Somehow it eluded me the first go around but come January of 2008 I heard it and downloaded it right away. Another Jeffrey Steele co-write as well.

Michelle Poe did put out 1 single for DreamWorks, "Just Like One Of The Boys" though it never charted. It had the misfortune of being released the same week as Gretchen Wilson's Redneck Woman - and apparently there was only room for one new woman at the time.

Reggie Hamm did release a "Christian" album on Universal South. The album featured "babies." He later releases another album through Tate music. That album featured his demo of "Time of My Life" from David Cook.

Cledus T. Judd was originally signed to Cross Three early in his career but he never released anything for them.

Cledus T. Judd was apparently signed to Cross Three Records (the same label that released the Mavericks' debut album) early in his career but it doesn't look like he ever released anything under them. By March 1995, he was already on Razor & Tie.
Strangely, I have a copy of "Indian In-Laws" that is credited to BLT Records, but googling "BLT Records" with his name gave no results whatsoever.

I remember Angela Hacker, what's happened to her? Is she still recording? Hacker put out a disc of Nashville Star demos, and was featured on two Cowboy Troy songs. She never put any singles out for Warner, so I'd say she counts. It's odd that she won Nashville Star, yet has become so obscure that she doesn't even have a Wikipedia article.

Another one: Scotty Emerick was on Rising Tide Records in 1997, but didn't release anything due to the label closing.
