I heard this for the first time today on spotify and honestly this sounds like typical "bro" country fare with crossover appeal. I expect this to be sent to pop radio at some point

This seems to have recovered nicely after its "On The Verge" run has finished. I still think that the song is better suited to HotAC than country, but I do quite like it. The firm album release date shows that MCA is invested in Sam, and I can see him being the next big country crossover artist, especially after Hunter Hayes seems to have faltered a little. The problem I have with this guy..... he's NOT country! So I'm hoping he is not the next big crossover artist. He's super talented, really good songwriter and has a great voice, so I can't knock that but to me he belongs more so on Pop, HOT AC and R&B radio; but not Country. However, as long as he keeps swooning those female country listeners the more they will call the stations to request his stuff. Women are the majority of who buy Country records anyway, so he's got that going for him more so than anything, he's already won over the female market.

This song isn't really "Bro" though, Sir Benji. That's the problem with too many songs these days, they may have similar ideas but does this song mention a party anywhere except for a young couple to hang out together under the moonlight? Nope. It may be 'pop' (whatever that truly is) but it's in, no way, shape, or form, a 'bro' song.

Yeah, I don't really think this is bro-country. Pure pop-music? Yes, but not really bro IMO.

This is my favorite song on radio. I'm surprised you guys are bashing on it for being pop. It's far more country than Blown Away

I love hearing this song on Country radio. It fits perfectly with all the other current country hits that I enjoy.
Just checked Roughstock and it looks like another huge sales week. Up to #4 on iTunes with 50k sold this week. Even the "buzz" album cuts are doing well. "Break Up In a Small Town" sales are pretty good even though it has no airplay or promo. It was released same day as Chesney's "Flora Bama" but Hunt's new song is stabilizing at #24 while Kenny's has fallen to #58. The solid sales of the buzz singles remind me of FGL's EP singles sales back in 2012. Can't wait to buy the full album on 10/27 when the 2nd radio single will finally be available for download.

The folks that are defending this song and saying that it IS Country music and FITS in with Country music seriously have NO clue what TRUE Country Music is!! I will say it for the third time, Sam Hunt is NOT Country! YES, he is extremely talented in what he does, he deserves to have a record deal, he deserves to have songs on the radio..... but he is NOT Country and I wish he would be played more so on the HOT AC, R&B & Pop Stations. That's PART of the problem these days, the fans of country music are different than what it used to be (when Country was truly great).
Hurry up Garth.... hurry up new BMLG Imprint label that will be pushing some of the older vets.... we need to get some more GREAT Country back on the radio to help balance out everything else that is being played.

The reason why Leave the Night On is so popular with country fans is because those fans don't know what country music is. Yeah, the genre has changed but give me a break. There's nothing country about Sam Hunt as a performer. I just listened to Breakup in a Small Town and if I ever hear that on country radio I am staying strictly Pandora. That song is complete garbage for country.

I find it amusing that some of the ones who are saying this isn't country are some of the same people who are saying Aldean's latest release IS country.
Anymore, I just stay out of the "it's country, it's not country" debate. We're not calling balls & strikes anymore, folks. It's not that easy...sadly.

Both are lacking the country elements that would define it as country but I definitely prefer Sam's to Jason's in terms of quality IMO. I also don't really remember anybody who called Sam's "not country", Jason's "country". I clearly must have missed the posters or really anybody who have said that but I'm sure there's some who do feel that way.

Thing is, there is no clear cut definition of what it is. In the late 80s, people were saying Garth and Clint weren't true country. In fact, they were making the EXACT same arguments that you are making now.

Sadly since the dawn of Country music or "Country & Western" or "Hillbilly Music" whatever name it's had through time, there's always been a divide about what is or isn't "Country." Many of the artists used as "Country" torch bearers today (from Outlaws to Garth Brooks) were considered "Not Country" when they came around. I had someone (in his late 50s) here in Nashville last night -- who LOVES old Country -- call "Break Up In A Small Town" a Country song, even with it's Drake-like spoken verses? Why? Because of the more nasal vocal, the lyrical content and the production sounds, even if they had heavy programming in it. And he's right, even if it's buried in the mix, those hallmarks are there, even on this or any other so called 'pop' song, even Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" and "Good Girl" (which had very pop-leaning sounds).

I just now realized that the title of his EP, X2C, sounds like "Ex To See", the song name. How I didn't figure this out before, I don't know.

I was slow on picking that one up too. I was thinking it was short for "ecstasy" and was happy to be told it was for short for the song.

I have the EP, but I'll use the excuse that I've only listened to it once so I didn't pick that up on the first listen.

I have the EP, but I'll use the excuse that I've only listened to it once so I didn't pick that up on the first listen. It would be a clever grammatical device for a teen writing a rap song. For someone who is known for his songwriting skills (and trust me, I respect what he has done for country music), "you don't want me, you just want your ex-to-see, ex-to-see" isn't exactly charming. If you all have a free minute (which, hey you're surfing a message board, so I know you do!) take a listen to Sam's song Ex to See (I started it at the chorus for your listening enjoyment): www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOwod4S__n0&t=0m42sAnd now listen to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NOwkVzAYg8&t=0m52sCan you pick out the country song...?

Honestly, I find myself turning back to Country now because it's the only place to find more "rock" elements than most formats. The format has created a lot of bankable stars who not only draw well in concert, but sell a lot of albums - that's the real test rather than airplay.
Music evolves - I suppose everyone defines a category based on when they started listening to a format. For example, I first started listening to country music around 1979-84 - between the huge crossovers to pop and the overall music played in format, I'd hardly call that traditional country. (In fact, it was more like AC.) Look at R&B/Hip-Hop, which like pop has had several different phases - from soul to Motown to Funk to Disco to New Jack to Rap to Hip-hop, etc. What is traditional R&B anymore?

I know a lot of you don't listen to American Country Countdown, but Sam is one of this week's special guests. FYI, Suzanne Alexander of GAC is filling in for Kix this week.

I might actually give it a listen for a few segments this Sunday. But I know I'm going to turn the dial when they break out their ACC extra after playing the 30th song in the country, and that extra probably being either "Get Me Some Of That", "We Are Tonight", "Beachin'", or any other song that went recurrent over the past three months.

I like this song a lot but it doesn't sound very country to me. I know that country has changed a ton but at least I can find a country element in them. This is pure pop to me.

I don't see what the problem is putting him under today's country, since the majority of today's country on the radio isn't even "country" in the first place. It would be hypocritical to draw the line at putting Sam Hunt as a country artist when you have guys like Luke Bryan as one of country music's biggest stars.

It's funny because there's a similar conversation going over in the Alternative/Rock charts thread. I think Country is undergoing an identity crisis right now. The definition of what the genre is undergoing a redefining, and I think that's going to include more sub-genres, like country-rock (Brantley Gilbert & Eric Church), country-pop (Sam Hunt & Hunter Hayes), traditional country (Easton Corbin & Blake Shelton), and Bro-Country (Fla Ga Line & Cole Swindell). But the same thing is going on in the Alternative genre, where people who like Indie-pop are upset that it's taking over more harder rocking songs. Every genre undergoes changes (rock music has undergone a tone), and I think Country is a period of flux right now.
