Waiting patiently for "I Get Lonely" because I want that song played whenever my suite mates do lap dances for whatever reason
It's so funny when they do that but they need the appropriate music.

#34 When I Think Of You 1986, Control The bassline >> Her first Pop and Hot 100 #1. Even though it's not really that much poppier than the rest of the Control singles. Discipline 2008, Discipline The fact that Ne-Yo wrote this and recorded a demo always makes me kiii. 31 What About 1997, Velvet Rope Get into the ANGER!! Yasss As for the other TVR tracks, I need to get into this album more. Out of her classic albums, it's the one I prefer the least but this list is going to make me change my mind I sense ;)

The Velvet Rope is absolute perfection, in my opinion. From start to finish, this album just speaks to me. Most hardcore Janet fans consider TVR her masterpiece.

The Velvet Rope & Butterfly dropped by two of my fav right around the same time, both classics, personal, one was more deep and the other more fun. They share that introspective mood and I love it. Two of my favorite albums by two of the best divas to me. Its like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry earlier last year dropping album at the same time I guess.

Its like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry earlier last year dropping album at the same time  I guess. I don't think one month is really the same time... Same quarter, maybe. If you were talking about "Roar" vs. "Applause" then I'd definitely agree.

#33 Rope Burn 1997, Velvet Rope
Well....from the first line when Janet said " my lips hurt" I knew this was going to be special! This song personifies sexuality and between the lyrics, the production and the way she sings it, you're going to feel very sexy, VERY SEXY!.
Janet has that sweet voice and innocence that when she goes in sexually it still comes across as lovely and innocent rather than "nasty" cause we know some girls can take a little too far. It really doesn't even matter what she is singing about though, because if we step back from the sexuality, this is a chill and laid back bop. I love the melodic and vibe creating smoothness to the song. I just think it's one of her more beautiful melodies.
"(tie me) Tie me up, tie me down (make me moan real loud) Make me moan real loud (take off my clothes) Take off my clothes No one has to know Whisperin I wanna feel a soft rope burn (no one has to know) Wanna feel a Rope burn"
I can not really decide, 20 Foreplays or this as my favorite sexy Janet song But probably it is one of my favorite songs on The Velvete Rope with I get Lonely and title track

#30A I Want You 2004, Damito Jo
This song was largely affected by the "Blacklist" of Janet after the Superbowl fiasco, the single went to be certified platinum but largely fell by the wayside on radio. It evokes that old school Motown feel a lovely mid tempo number. It was produced by Kanye and has his signature fusion sound. My favorite part of the song is just the sugary sweet vocals and that melody that stays with you. This song is as fresh today as it was back in 2004 and it's a damn shame it wasnt a bigger hit for her.
It's classic Janet and unlike other , Kanye production from that time frame it wasn't overpowering, its was simple yet classic. The video was one of the best, I have ever seen Janet look, or should I say as beautiful and perfect as any women has looked in a video. Flawless!
#30B This Time 1993, Janet
I will let you listen to this operatic, magnificent piece of art.
"Walkin 'round with nasty hoes Tellin me that's the way life goes No, baby Way too far Said to me that I'm not that strong Watch me walk right through that door Hooh hoo yeah yeah"

#29 Doesnt Really Matter 2000, Nutty Professor 2/ All For You
Avin said "About Janet, well my favorite is "Doesn't Really Matter" from The Nutty Professor 2. Reason being the song (and some of its close associates) came out at a time when I was discovering my addiction and affection towards R&B and music videos. The video for the song is what sealed the deal with Janet. Have a good day"
First of bitch, bye. This song is pop perfection, catchy , infectious and addictive. The production and the melody set a feel good tone that is almost a lot to take. There is alot going in certain parts of this song, its hella distracting. I just find this song perfectly fits that era of dance/pop. It was very similar to her own song, "All For You" and songs from my other queen "Aaliyah", the influence is very strong in that case.
The video is classic Joseph Kahn, very colorful, Japanese influenced and certainly over the TOP! I love for its all its tacky glory!

Love all the Velvet Rope talk. I listened to it on the way home tonight and you can just tell so much work was put into that album. The mood, the melodies, the harmonies/background vocals, the lyrics, and the beats are all incredible. GREAT work by Janet, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. Even at its cheesiest ("Special" and to a lesser extent "Every Time") it works completely. I wish more people would talk about "Empty," the production sounds like something a current indie electronic group would produce, and the lyrics talking about online romance was ahead of its time, something that TLC would later take on with FanMail.

#34 When I Think Of You: Over the years the video became one of my favorites from Janet. It’s like an essence of the 80s captured in one clip. I also rank this song very high as far as Control is concerned. I started to love it so much after the TVR Tour performance happened. I love how genuinely happy and carefree Janet wa while performing it. Honestly, you just can help, but smile.
#33 Rope Burn: 2nd most sensual song from Janet after 70s Love Groove for me. The performance was absolutely the best. Yet again, Janet knew too well what she did to men and decided to make the best of it. But she still kept it CLASSY.
#32 My Need: I love all metaphors in it. It’s like listening to a prayer. Janet is so vulnerable, yet sincere in it. 31 What About: A highlight from the masterpiece better known as The Velvet Rope. I love it. I always felt that it was more personal for Janet that This Time (So for me: WA >> TT) So much anger in it, but there’s also a release from the pain and the one who cased it. #30A I Want You This is one of my biggest jams from Janet of all time. PERIOD. I really seems like I love it more each day.
#30B This Time: It’s one of these songs that just makes you numb when you listen to it. The lyrics. The haunting singing. The instrumental. ALL FLAWLESS. An absolute highlight from Janet. for me #29 Doesnt Really Matter: cute poppy track. I consider it to be one of Janet signature songs, but if I was force choose between this and some other of her singnature songs. I could honestly live without this one. I like the video a lot. It remind me of my teen years, and I think it’s just unjust it wasn’t featured on one of her DVDs. (Well, this and Twenty Forplay…. WHY …)

The Velvet Rope is not only a R&B masterpiece, but also a complete body of work, telling a meaningful story. It’s one of these LPs where I refuse to rank the songs, because every single one of them is an important element of it… It really feels like an emotional diary of falling into depression, dealing with it,,then recovering from it and getting your strength back. Honestly, when I’m going through a lot often listening to TVR over, and over again is an important component to recover from whatever bugs me. If it was just filled with the struggle it wouldn’t be as meaningful as it is for me today. This obvious shift of the mood between What About & Everytime is the key element of this LP, and then the more optimistic attitude just grows from there. However, Can’t Be Stopped & Accept Me should be both featured on this album otherwise the significant element of this story is missing. There’s just a perfect continuation of Special, imo.

#28 Again 1993, Janet
Simply gorgeous, a ballad that equally soothing and exquisite. Her voice glides over this song like a angel in the sky, or a bird taking flight, its just heavenly. I usually play this as one of my late night ballads go to, it just warms my heart. It was a #1 hit on the charts for Janet, it also got a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination. However I still feel this is still one of those underrated songs in her repertoire. That's the thing with someone with so many symbolic and easily recognizable material has, MEGA DIVA problems.
It's like a lullaby for adult romance and to this day, i still don't understand any man who would break the heart of someone so pure at heart and so beautiful.

#27 What Have You Done For Me Lately 1986, Control
This is the breakthrough of the global force known as Janet, this song put her all the way out there. It's a classic pop record and what you would think of when the name "Janet Jackson" or the "Jacksons" come to mind. I will get back to the song but just wanted to say while I love it and enjoy it, I for one am so happy she took her music into a different direction than just these types of pop records, which have their place but I yearn for another Janet.
It's a sassy, female empowerment song that is in line with Janet's surprising "attitude" and "aggressive" nature in music while coming across as meek or shy in real life, never judge a book by its cover. The song went on to become of many top 5 songs on the chart for her.
The video and dance routine while cute and similar to what we come to expect from her family name, wasnt on par with some others songs on this list. It was cute though. Janet and Paula are cute together, no?
"I never ask for more than I deserve You know it's the truth You seem to think you're God's gift to this earth I'm tellin' you, no way
You ought to be thankful for the little things, but little things are all you seem to give You're always putting off what we can do today Soap opera says, you've got one life to live Who's right, who's wrong?"

I'd be hard pressed to leave Velvet Rope off of a Greatest Albums of All Time list, no surprise to see so much love for it. Had I paid proper attention to your requests, "Again," "Doesn't Really Matter," "What If," "Escapade" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately" might have received shout outs from me (out of your selections thus far). My top pick has yet to be listed though, so here's to what ever else you have in store. <3

'Again' is such a pretty song! The melody is great and so are Janet's vocals. The original piano ballad to hit #1 #Adeleshade *sips tea*
'What Have You Done For Me Lately' is fierce! The opening dialogue >> Should've been her first #1 imo.

#26 Together Again 1997, Velvet Rope
@drag27 - My favorite Janet song would have to be "Together Again". The fact that she made something with such a sad topic really helped me deal with a family death. Her vocals have a soft gentle tone which really works for the song and that's why I'd rank it as my favorite.
@iwannago -This was the first Janet Jackson song I ever heard back in early 1998 when I was only five years old, and the song that made me become a fan. One day I was in the car and my Mom had my favorite station on, WALK-FM in Long Island, and they played this. I had no idea who sang it or what the song was called, but I absolutely loved it and was even singing along. Back then, I sang along to EVERY song that came on the radio that I liked. Not long after that my brother told me who it was and I saw the video on VH1. Janet has a lot of great songs, but this one is very nostalgic to me because it brings me back to what I always thought was a fantastic era for top 40 music.
Once again we dip into the classic album and plug a classic song, CLASSIC! A pop anthem, a strong melody. A fun song that you almost forget the subject matter or how deeply personal it can be. This is that song you can put on and remember someone who you love that is no longer in your life. Janet sung this to a friend of hers who passed from AIDS, me personally it now makes me think of my favorite person, my grandmother who passed from cancer a few years back.
Originally a ballad that was redone to be a dance track, what really got me hooked intiially was the music video, the scenary, the African theme and all the strong African symbols of strength and happiness displayed in the video was the right way to immerse in a culture, showcase some of it and do it well. Not surprisngly the song went on to become Janet's, 8th number one hit.
A few years ago this would be a top 10 song but since this chart is basically what i love and or listen to the most now, it didn't score as high as some of the others but came in at a impressive #26 spot, again first world diva problems!
"Everywhere I go Every smile I see I know you are there Smilin back at me Dancin in moonlight I know you are free Cuz I can see your star Shinin down on me"

#25 Scream 1995, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I
Devil Marlena Nylund- I know it's brother Michael's song but Janet is on it too and it's iconic! Most expensive video ever made at the time (was it 7 million?), their first (and only) collaboration, and even though it underperformed, it sounds as fresh today as it did back then. It has some hint of 90s in there but it could be released now and not be nearly as stale as some of today's hits
Historic, iconic and dual song with her legendary brother, THE KING AND QUEEN OF POP, one family, one song. The moment that went down in music history and the first time you hear that electronic intro, your heart stops for a second as you know you're witnessing music history.
Aggressive, dynamic and exhilarating and big fuck you to the press, stans, and the entire world, to mind their business and let them live, let them breathe, stay the fuck out. They went IN on this song and the brutal honesty was refreshing. It's one of those songs i turn to when i need to remind myself to be fierce and to take no prisoners!
The budget for music video was insane and unlike other high priced , big budget videos you could see where all the $$$$ went, it was made better by the dance performances by two of the worlds best entertainers. I don't even know what genres this was, dance? electro pop, rock/pop, r&B, all i know it was music and historical music at that. A very important track by two very important performers. It was a top 5 hit single, shouldve been #1 imo. RIP , king of music (there will never be anyone like you)

Well i said I had a unhealthy obsession with the "Velvet Rope" so #24 we dip right back into it, I've lost count how many times lol and coming up at #23 is a classic bop that was my everything for years.

I know the WHOLE choreography to Together Again. I used to watch TRL religiously just so I could know every step. My aunt took me to the concert with Usher opening and I was killing it in the pit. Such a divine and inspirational jam. The other Janet cupping her titty did confuse for a minute LOL
