So now that I have rolled out the first of the 5 bonus tracks leading up to the chart starting on Saturday and obviously since 5 days left rolling one bonus track a day (still accepting your fav/commentary till Friday) let me me explain why Janet and how my chart came to me.
Growing up if you followed my other two personal charts (Mariah, Aaliyah) music wasn't something that was accepted in my household for religious and personal choices my mother made, her house , her rules, duh. I use to sneak in my music because hello when does , Coco follow rules? Read all about the time i got my ass whooped for it in the Aaliyah thread, that was all kinds of hilarious.
The first introduction to western music came via Aaliyah she spoke to the sweet natured side of me, Mariah followed and she spoke to the diva and personal tortured side of me and last on that list was Janet and she spoke to the fun, entertainer side of me, naturally. These three woman more than any formed the person that I am despite of all the musical choices i have since branched out to, they will always have a special place in my heart, always and forever.
Naturally my top 40 chart isn't based on what i think is the greatest songs by Janet or critically acclaimed , it's simply the 40 songs i personally enjoy listening to the most. They signify my different moods and tastes and snapshot of what Janet means to me, or what that song means to me personally. Doing this chart revealed a song that I never imagined was my favorite but out of all the charts I have done, it's clearly the one song that was easily number 1 by that respective artist bar none. With Aaliyah and Mariah there was bit of a back and forth struggle.
Janet Jackson needs no introduction she will always hold a place in music history with her career even if some of the girls today have forgotten. She spoke on social issues in a way that was more authentic than alot of other pop stars, it wasnt in your face or shock and awe campaign, it was more organic, subtle and more effective. She was one of the first black woman that signified beauty in America, her music was universal and played in every household but if you grew up in a black household you couldn't escape it.
Her music was a perfect blend of fun, sex and social/deep subject matter, you could listen to Janet while in your room just chilling out or bump it on the way to a girls night out or club, she was a entertainer and dancer of epic proportions. Nobody since Janet put on a show quite like she did and no other woman has the variety of moves and technicality she brought to the table ( Britney, Ciara and to a much lesser degree Beyonce can also be proud of what they brought as a dancer) but it all started and ended with Janet, of course.
Welcome to my show, I mean Janet's Top 40 please bring the sass fun and commentary while you enjoy the music and everything the good sis, Coco is serving.

'Because of Love' is underrated! It was never one of my favorites during the "janet." era. I always considered it to be a filler/throwaway single and it got a little lost in the shuffle of the album. I have a new respect for the track, though. It's quite lovely, actually.

Because of Love gets lost among such mastrpieces as If, Again and That's the Way Love Goes, It's understandable. It's a cute track, but doesn't even stand a chance wih any of them. My favorite album track from Janet. is Where Are You Now. It's a very relaxing song that imo deserved more exposure.
Recently that Janet. image became one of my favorites from JJ. I used to prefer TVR & RR1814, or even Control image for years, but now it changed a bit.

It got tons of radio airplay without even being a single. Great for album sales, I guess. This was an amazing era for Janet.

I know it did, but just imagine what wonders it would do for Janet if it was properly released with video and several live performences... It's the worst case of a hit that run away from her discography maybe along with Lonely for me. Such a wasted opportunity.

#42 Young Love 1982, Janet Jackson
No commentary till Saturday but had to mention this song is kind of historic. This was the lead single of the debut album " Janet Jackson" now if you heard the album it's not her best effort and was very bubble gum pop but the thing that has always stood out for me in regards to this song is that it just sounds rooted in r&B, funk and soul from that era. I just adore the way Janet sings in this song and it highlights how impeccable her tone can be. Voices come in all ranges but does it sound good? yes. There were a few other singles and non singles that could have been placed here and didn't make the Top 45 that i probably enjoy equally but what set this song apart from them is that it was different and just in a nostalgic 70's kinda way.
This single unleashed on to the world a dominate and durable talent that stood the test of time, on her own terms.

The Janet album remains flawless till this very day one of the best body of work put out by any female pop/r&b act. Usually when you get a strong album like that the next one seems like a bit of a letdown but she managed to switch it up and hit us with back to back albums that are incredible. I liked Janet, those two album made me love her however.

There aren't many in the business who can rival this stretch of album perfection:

Now that the bonus chart is over and the real chart starts Tomorrow! (still one more day for your submissions for best Janet song) one last bonus track to hold ya thirsty ass over
Busta Rhymes better get on his knees and service the Queen for serving him with a featured performance so good it not only placed the rapper at #3 on the billboard Charts , one of his highest placement on the chart until another Queen, Mariah also serviced him life. The fact that Janet was featured is really the only reason the label decided to give Busta a budget that was one of the highest for a music video, 2 million at that time was BIGTIME. This song if it was Janet's would have placed very high on my chart, very high! or is low?
The beat is hot, the song is dripping in sexual innuendo, the hook is vicious and honey I know a thing or two about wet dreams, Janet and I have left a trail for the thirsty. Speaking of sexual Janet, stay tuned for tomorrow #40! We will have you groaning and searching for ice.
