#526. Akon - Lonely 2 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#23 of 25 for '05)
Akon's an odd artist. I've completely blanked on him ever releasing music in 2005. I'm familiar with his string of hits in 2006/07. But I came to know him as one of those artists that features on every song in existence for some reason, though it's been a while since we've really seen him; "Play Hard" aside. (Also, wow, I never realized that he hasn't released a studio album in 6 years!) So, this was his second single off his debut album. The Chimpunk-ed Bobby Vinton sample is rather grating on this, and pretty much ruins the song for me. It's a song about him regretting the one that got away, and he's feeling lonely (obviously.) I have a hard time taking this sentimental side of Akon seriously. Maybe I'm being harsh because I can't get the image out of my mind of everything Akon has done since. I don't know.

Yes someone else doesn't like "The Lazy Song"! It and "Gorilla" do nothing for me. "Lonely" is okay, but I can only tolerate it every once in a while. Also, it is hard to picture Akon singing seriously like this when "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That" exist.

"Lift Me Up" is my least favorite Geri Halliwell song ever so you're okay, @gagalicious
"Ride It" should have gone number one. :(

#525. Dizzee Rascal - Dirtee Disco 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#31 of 34 for '10)
His other club bangers before this one felt fun. This one just feels forgettable. The usual trite lyrics of partying in a club. Repeating the word "disco" a bunch of times doesn't make much of a hook.

#524. Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's 1 week at #1 in 1996 (#21 of 24 for '96)
This is one of those songs that people either seem to really love or really late. Put me the latter category. The song is about two people drifting apart because they have nothing in common. Then it goes to one of the most awkwardly written choruses ever. “And I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany's?; She said I think I remember the film; And as I recall I think, we both kind of liked it; And I said well that's; the one thing we've got”.. like what? I get that they're trying to make it awkward on purpose to make it a realistic conversation, it all comes down to sharing something so trivial in common, but it's very difficult to put it to a tune. They do it by odd enunciation and over emphasis of certain syllables; which just makes the whole thing bloody annoying. And I don't think it's enough to salvage a relationship lol.

#523. X Factor Finalists 2010 - Heroes 2 weeks at #1 in 2010 (#30 of 34 for '10)
So after doing “Hero” in series 5... they do “HeroES” in series 7. Yeah, not confusing at all. I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on this one. Oh, fetus 1D. Too much Katie Waissel.

#522. Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca 3 weeks at #1 in 1999 (#30 of 35 for '99)
It's like they tried to make this as loud and as irritating as possible. The instrumental is noisy. Ricky's chorus is noisy. Like everything is recorded at top volume. I hate the “COME ON” parts. The lyrics are beyond stupid. Of course it's a bad song. There's no way this was ever meant to be anything but a bad song. But I just don't find it an enjoyable bad song.

#521. Westlife - You Raise Me Up 2 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#22 of 25 for '05)So we were spared a Westlife #1 in 2004 (mostly cuz of Brian leaving the group though) and this was the first single to be released since his departure. By this point I'm getting tired of writing about bland Westlife cover songs. This feels a bit different from the others, so I rank it higher for that reason. What makes it different is that this song is basically a church hymn; choir and all. Though there's an Irish violin breakdown in the middle for some reason. By this point, Westlife are now obviously catering to the 60 and over crowd. Umm what else can I really say? It's still dull like their other ballads. Lozzy I think you said this one of the dull Westlife songs you knew? Also, I think you're going to really like 3 of my entries tomorrow. ;)

#520. The Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom 4 weeks at #1 in 1995 (#15 of 17 for '95)
Well you know the other one was bound to show up soon rather than later. So for their follow-up single, they repeat the same formula as their previous one. Replace raunchy lyrics about oral sex with raunchy lyrics about anal sex. Replace the annoying "wiggle wiggle" with a slightly less annoying "boom boom boom." I'll admit the "hey-oh" parts are kinda catchy, though.

#519. Steps - Stomp 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#38 of 42 for '00)
Normally, I'd love an overly camp song like this. But I guess this is too childish for me. It is practically a children's song. Very basic lyrics.
Omg the dancing in this video.

#518. Dappy - No Regrets 1 week at #1 in 2011 (#28 of 30 for '11)When I said I had fond memories of 2011, it doesn't mean I love everything from that year. From the very first time I heard this song, I always thought it was a really lame song. It tries so hard to be an inspirational anthem, but it just falls flat. It's sending two different messages at once here: he's living life without regrets; and faith has kept him going in life. The video definitely reinforces the latter, as does the church choir at the end of the song. But the two messages don't necessarily go together and they don't combine well in this song. It feels like Dappy is using these two life philosophies as his excuse to be smug and arrogant, and there's just something patronizing about it. It also feels like Dappy is playing the victim here and I find it hard to sympathize with him. “I'm a changed man now, Chris Brown” is one awful lyric and comparing himself to Kurt Cobain is a bit much. And what's with the key change lol.

#517. Eminem feat. Rihanna - The Monster 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#28 of 30 for '13)
I know this placing is going to be controversial. So, I'll try my best going in depth with this one. Let's start with the production. It's boring and it's basic and it's a good four years out of date. Next, the chorus. It's really weak and anit-climatic. It all builds up to the line “well that's nothing” (though it sounds like Rihanna says “not fair”; the lyric is indeed “nothing”), but it's not sung strong enough (except at the very end), and it's not that creative of a phrase. The “wah-ooh-ohh”'s, which just feel like a substitute for lack of lyrics, aren't a very strong hook either. And then Eminem is making weird sounds like yodelling. And finally the lyrics. The song itself is about Eminem's internal conflict of wanting to be famous and doing what he's born to do, but also wanting privacy and a normal life (and it discusses some of the other perils of fame.) This conflict is driving him insane, literally. Which is what “the monster” in his head is all about. But he's “friends with the monster”, so he embraces his own instability. Which is fine as far as subject matter goes. It's a bit of a dark subject, and Eminem has made plenty of dark songs before. But this song isn't that dark. It's quite the opposite, actually - it's rather relaxed and upbeat. Though it's nice to have a break from constant angry Eminem, it just doesn't work for me. I'll take “Love The Way You Lie” over this any day.

I totally agree with "The Monster", hated it from the beginning, it's to LTWYL what Wiggle is to Talk Dirty (a cheap knockoff that's not nearly as good...)

#516. The Script feat. will.i.am - Hall Of Fame 2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#33 of 36 for '12)I think the Olympics had a lot to do with why this did so well. Another song attempting to be inspirational that doesn't do anything for me. This song is basically nothing but a list. You can be this, you can be that. It's like: I get, I can be anything. It reminds me of “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes. Lozzy there's your three :)

I just listened to Stomp the other day actually. There's one bit of instrumentation that I swear sounds like a sample/sampled in something, but it's not the actual song it sampled. I was listening to No Regrets a few days ago too, I think I like it now. But everything about Dappy is just offputting, starting straight from his face on the album cover in my iTunes. The one good thing about The Monster is that the era of frequent anonymous artist dance #1s began immediately after, so it can be viewed as a direct response to the branding-over-quality waste of space #1, and I can refer to the post-The Monster era for better times. Otherwise I think it's the most strongly I've ever hated anything. LTWYL is not that good either. Oh I hate Hall of Fame? Well I'm still sick of it and could not be more bored with The Script, so close enough. I have not thought about The Fighter in a long time. That one I sure do hate. (probably like it less than The Monster but I barely ever heard it so the hate can't compare!) Oh and I really like Boom Boom Boom lol. I prefer it to Don't Stop (though I haven't heard that one as much, and it was sampled in a random 2008 song [had no idea what it sampled until I heard DS last year] which I'd rather listen to).

#515. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody 4 weeks at #1 in 2002 (#25 of 29 for '02)
Oh, it's “Unchained Melody” again. Simon Cowell's favourite song to cover! And not the last song you'll be seeing twice in this list. Gareth came in second place on the first series of Pop Idol. I've read that Simon always wanted Gareth to win, and he pulled whatever strings to ensure that Gareth got more weeks at #1 than Will Young. lol. Gareth continued to one-up Will until their album releases. Gareth's time in the limelight was short lived, so I guess Will had the last laugh. I find most of Gareth's material to be pretty lousy, though, and maybe that's partly why he didn't last long. I don't know.
Anyway. I do like the Righteous Brothers version of this. And this is better than Robson & Jerome's, but that's not really saying anything. I think Gareth does a decent enough job, but it's far from being memorable. Part of what makes the Righteous Brother's version great is the way they belt out the “hunger” and the “I need your love” parts. Gareth makes those parts pretty tame. It is what it is, and I like it more than Will's winner's single, but it's still not something I'd actively want to listen to.

#514. Busted - Who's David 1 week at #1 in 2004 (#26 of 29 for '04)
So this is about a girl they're into, but she's sleeping around with everyone in school. So screw her. And that's pretty much it. It's a basic storyline. Maybe too basic for me. Maybe my age is showing. I don't know. Most Busted songs just don't do anything for me. I don't find this song particularly catchy, either.

"Stomp" samples "Everybody Dance" by Chic, a 1977 disco hit. Unless you mean something sampled "Stomp", then I have no idea. Though apparently Deborah Cox sampled that Chic song in her 2007 song "Everybody Dance (Clap Your Hands)." omg I just looked at Dappy's album cover.. Oh, for some reason I thought you hated "Hall Of Fame", maybe you were just really sick of it when it was still top 40 after fuck knows how many weeks, and that's what I remember lol. I don't even remember how "The Fighter" goes; and for some reason I feel like Ryan Tedder was involved in it (unless I'm confusing it with something else.)

#512. Take That - How Deep Is Your Love 3 weeks at #1 in 1996 (#20 of 24 for '96)Ugh; of all songs to end such a flawless career on, they end on this? An utterly pointless nothingy Bee Gees cover? And without Robbie in the group? “Never Forget” would've been more apt. This is definitely a single too far. Though it did give them another #1, so I guess it served its purpose. At least their legacy doesn't truly end with this song. (for those unaware: Take That split while still at their peak in 1996 and reformed in 2006 minus Robbie; then Robbie returned for their 2010 album Progress)

that Busted song isn't as cringe as I expected but really boring, I'd probably rather cringe. I'd heard UM before but naturally forgot everything about it, I think it's above average for reality show covers but I'd certainly rather listen to the original Righteous Brothers version. Not sure on the video, isn't the song supposed to be intimate? Doesn't seem like something you'd sing out in the street and have a large group of people standing behind. I like the white suit though. I was going to say his voice (and probably marketing) reminds me of a slightly older Harrison and then I remembered he covered that song too. Of course. I tried to think of songs that would appear twice and my first thought was Let It Go. It probably has/will have outsold a lot of these. 'These' being the whole list, not reality covers that sell shitloads. I eventually just looked at the #1s lists...and still the only one I noticed was a b-side. I'll just wait. Yeah that's the sample I looked up, and I didn't see anything familiar that sampled the Chic song either. It was just that instrument for 1 second at 0:31, 0:38, 1:30, 1:37, etc. I remember that too, and same with the top 50 in Australia. And it didn't even have the grace of leaving after that, being in the top 50 of iTunes as recently as 5 months ago. Probably due to an ad, but really I just choose to believe it's on a constant state of always being on some ad...though it seems to have finally stopped over the last few months. I hope they're not due for new music anytime soon. The Fighter did feature Tedder, singing so boringly that even Daylight is jealous. I didn't want to be at the top of the page so I deleted my most useless post, but I'll quote it here so it's not truly lost: oh Pitbull took lyrics from here of all places? sounds fun I'm going to listen to it later when I'm not listening to something x I didn't listen to Perfect Moment in full but it sounds nice. Since she predates reality TV, where is she from?
