#511. Eamon - F**k It (I Don't Want You Back) 4 weeks at #1 in 2004 (#25 of 29 for '04)
A song that became a hit because of how many swears are in it. The story in this song is self-explanatory. There's no deep meaning here. It's an angry “f**k you” song with obnoxiously whiny vocals; set to a slow smooth (almost sensual) R&B production. The song is built on creating shock factor through its expletives, whether intentional or not. But I find that shock factor wears off pretty quickly, and I'm left with a song that feels rather tedious.

that Busted song isn't as cringe as I expected but really boring, I'd probably rather cringe. I'd heard UM before but naturally forgot everything about it, I think it's above average for reality show covers but I'd certainly rather listen to the original Righteous Brothers version. Not sure on the video, isn't the song supposed to be intimate? Doesn't seem like something you'd sing out in the street and have a large group of people standing behind. I like the white suit though. I was going to say his voice (and probably marketing) reminds me of a slightly older Harrison and then I remembered he covered that song too. Of course. I tried to think of songs that would appear twice and my first thought was Let It Go. It probably has/will have outsold a lot of these. 'These' being the whole list, not reality covers that sell shitloads. I eventually just looked at the #1s lists...and still the only one I noticed was a b-side. I'll just wait. Yeah that's the sample I looked up, and I didn't see anything familiar that sampled the Chic song either. It was just that instrument for 1 second at 0:31, 0:38, 1:30, 1:37, etc. I remember that too, and same with the top 50 in Australia. And it didn't even have the grace of leaving after that, being in the top 50 of iTunes as recently as 5 months ago. Probably due to an ad, but really I just choose to believe it's on a constant state of always being on some ad...though it seems to have finally stopped over the last few months. I hope they're not due for new music anytime soon. The Fighter did feature Tedder, singing so boringly that even Daylight is jealous. I didn't want to be at the top of the page so I deleted my most useless post, but I'll quote it here so it's not truly lost: oh Pitbull took lyrics from here of all places? sounds fun I'm going to listen to it later when I'm not listening to something x I didn't listen to Perfect Moment in full but it sounds nice. Since she predates reality TV, where is she from? Yeah I don't think the Righteous Brothers version is the original, is it? It's certainly the most well known version and it's really old; so close enough! Yeah that video doesn't fit UM at all lol. Maybe a mocha choca latta will refreshen your memory (it's a double-A side so..); plus there's still the original version of one of the XFF singles. The first thing I thought of was "Lola's Theme", but not really. Figures. Tedder is everywhere.

That is the song I found. Lola's Theme seemed really random to me but upon listening I do hear it! Looking forward to Lola's Theme hopefully not being anytime soon
on Forget It, I actually recently-ish grew to like it. And I kind of like FURB too. That one's obviously laughable novelty spinoff crap but is Forget It that soulless/just shock factor? It feels somewhat genuine. And I feel like people had to like it for it to hit #1 (in so many places too), does swearing really have shock factor in 2004? Especially in non-English speaking countries. Maybe it's more like radio DJs hyped it up to make people believe there's SO MUCH SWEARING WILL BLOW YOUR MIND YOU MUST BUY THE CD etc. FURB's success I can better see as shock factor/novelty factor (and/or 'omg she wrote an answer song so fascinating'). I went to the Forget It video out of curiosity, makes him look like a dick but I think that's the point. But it makes me feel bad for the girl, which isn't the point. I prefer the FURB video, it makes me laugh.
edit: changed to Forget It because the censors make it look bad

I like FURB for the hilarity of it even existing, but I want to have something to talk about when I get to entry so...
Maybe I'm oversimplying things with "f**k It". I always thought the swear words were a big part of it. They're featured prominently. It's in the title. Each line in the chorus begins with the word "f**k." But I can imagine a lot of people in s**tty break-ups can relate to it. But yeah, he does come off as bit of a dick.
Also to answer your earlier question about Martine (which I forgot to answer): She was on the soap opera Eastenders for 4 years and left the show to pursue her singing career. That feels like such a late 80's / early 90's trend, but I guess it worked for her. I have no idea how popular she was on the show.

As expected, I'm so behind of this First of all, it seems that I'm in the minority here because I like the James Arthur's version of "Impossible". I mean, if it wasn't because of his version, I wouldn't have known that it was a cover from Shontelle, since she's relatively unknown in my country. Being said that, I prefer the original though. On the other hand, I don't like to see the 5ive version of "We Will Rock You" too low. I really enjoyed it and I remember watching the video so many times in MTV LA when MTV has music videos on its programming. However, "All Summer Long" and "The Man" should have been lower though. I don't like those. Anyway, why is "You're Beautiful" so low? :( It was one my favourite songs from 2006. I know, it peaked atop in 2005 in the UK, but it made the crossover to the US and Latin America a year later and I still remember how many radio stations jumped on it. It was crazy. I think some of them in my country still play it, although I prefer his other singles from Back to Bedlam over this. I mean, "High" is totally amazing in my opinion and it made me to buy his album Also, I agree with the spots of "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and "The Lazy Song". I don't like both songs and I still don't get why did my local stations play both of them? I mean, come on. However, I have to admit that I liked the former when it came out, but I hated it when it became viral in Peru because of a wedding video O. I didn't know "Livin' La Vida Loca" peaked atop in the UK. You could assume that I have listened to the Spanish version more times than this one, but I like it too. Also, I agree with your comments about "The Monster". I still don't like it and I prefer so many times "Love the Way You Lie" over it. On the other side, I like "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" and I think it's low. The song is amazing in my opinion and I like how my local stations don't filter it. By the way, I really like your commentaries so far as well

#510. Will Smith - Men In Black 4 weeks at #1 in 1997 (#23 of 24 for '97)
This song just feels like an advertisement for the film itself. Like I said before, I don't really like Will Smith that much. I think I find that he just tries too hard to be “cool.” “Gettin' Jiggy With It” and “Wild Wild West” have always made me cringe, mostly for that reason. “Men In Black” is one of those songs where it's like: they struck gold with a catchy chorus; but then had no idea how to fill the verses. I mean really, how many times does he have to clarify what colour suits they wear and what their jobs are?

#509. The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) 1 week at #1 in 1999 (#28 of 35 for '99)
Speaking of trying too hard to be cool. Here's a song devoted to just that! It's a stab at white boys acting like black boys cuz they think they're cool, or whatever. I do find this song pretty funny sometimes, but his voice is kinda annoying (and I don't really like any of their other songs). And then there's just so many random things going on. The "give it to me baby" and "UH HUH UH HUH" parts (which are really irritating), the "gobim gleebin glabum" whatever intro, the Spanish counting, the cowbell. None of it really has to do with anything, but it makes the song catchy I guess.

#508. Gareth Gates - Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) 3 weeks at #1 in 2002 (#24 of 29 for '02)
Well, I give it credit for it being an original song. This is a "I'm sorry I cheated" song. But the problem is, is that he's claiming "it can happen to anyone of us!" Oh yes, I'm sorry, it's not my fault! Plenty of other people cheat too, it must human nature, so that makes it okay! Yeah... I don't think his girlfriend is going to buy that. It's pretty hard to empathize with Gareth here. It's a lousy excuse, and he doesn't come off very remorseful either.

#507. Scouting For Girls - This Ain't A Love Song 2 weeks at #1 in 2010 (#29 of 34 for '10)Hmm can't seem to find the video on YouTube (wonder if it's blocked in Canada ) Anyway, more like "This Ain't An Interesting Song." I'll just echo the complaints I've seen that all their songs sound the same. Actually, it's not even so much that; their songs are just so.. pedestrian.. I guess you could say. They're so inoffensive and formulaic that they could be sung by any anonymous band out there. It's a basic song with a universal message. It's not bad; it's just uninteresting.

#506. LL Cool J - Ain't Nobody 1 week at #1 in 1997 (#22 of 24 for '97)Starting off with the obligatory "why exactly is this a #1?" I mean, it didn't even go top 40 in the US. Maybe it had something to do with that (overused) sample. Maybe it had something to do with the Beavis & Butthead association. I don't know. As far as late 90's rap songs go; this is really forgettable. I'm not sure why I ranked it as high as this when I made my list lol. I guess I do like the sample (though Liberty X do it better )

#505. Pixie Lott - Boys & Girls 1 week at #1 in 2009 (#29 of 32 for '09)
"All the boys and the girls they got it going on.." "..All the boys and the girls, no you just can't stop.." did a 5 year old write this? This sounds like something straight out of High School Musical.

#504. Gary Barlow - Love Won't Wait 1 week at #1 in 1997 (#21 of 24 for '97)
This sounds like a Take That leftover. But apparently it's a Madonna leftover. She co-wrote this for herself, but it was scrapped and Barlow snatched it up. I can see why it was scrapped. It's pretty basic and dated, especially compared to what she was releasing at the time (I can't see this alongside the track listings of Bedtime Stories and Ray Of Light). Despite Barlow adding a certain catchiness to it, his version still sounds pretty boring.

#503. Robson & Jerome - I Believe / Up On The Roof 4 weeks at #1 in 1995 (#14 of 17 for '95)
Unsurprisingly, none of their #1's make my top 500. "I Believe" is a cover of that 1953 Frankie Laine song that spent 18 long weeks at #1. Yeah I definitely like this more than I should. Maybe cuz it's only about 2:10, so it doesn't linger around long enough to annoy me. It's another song that sounds like a church hymn. Indeed, it can be a song about reaffirming one's (religious) faith (which wouldn't surprise me for a 1953 song); but I take it as more of a song about finding the beauty of the simple things in life. It doesn't make any specific religious references, and I'm not a religious person, so I prefer my interpretation. But it's basically the exact same arrangement as "Unchained Melody". "Up On The Roof" is definitely the better track, though. Also this blocked "Wonderwall" from #1, so boo.

#502. U2 - Discotheque 1 week at #1 in 1997 (#20 of 24 for '97)
I do appreciate that they tried something different and I usually love when artists do experimental stuff. But this is such a major 'wtf' moment. What a complete nonsensical mess of a song. "Discoteque" is so unclear with what it's trying to be, that I don't even know how to make sense of it. It just seems like a bunch of random pieces thrown together for the sake of it. This video is so unintentionally hilarious (like why are they imitating the Village People?)

#501. Boyzone - All That I Need 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#28 of 30 for '98)
I can never remember how this goes and it's their one #1 that I always forget about. This song sounds so much like "As Long As You Love Me" by the Backstreet Boys. Right down to that opening guitar riff. It's not bad, just really forgettable.

I think I like "Livin La Vida Loca", but I can see why people wouldn't.
I like "Hall Of Fame", but I'm kind of tired of hearing it since it was overplayed.
"The Monster" is terrible. I did like it and send it to my top ten (regret this already) but it was too overplayed. It doesn't help that this song is incredibly basic and a knock off of "Love The Way You Lie", which is far superior.

#500. Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa - Payphone 2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#32 of 36 for '12)*insert redundant complaint about payphones being outdated* I forgot how over the top this video is, and how little it has to do with the song. lol. Omg his vocals in that opening line. My ears! So, Maroon 5's only #1 so far. I really liked "This Love", "She Will Be Loved", "Makes Me Wonder", "Wake Up Call" and "Moves Like Jagger," and since MLJ isn't overplayed anymore, I can enjoy it again. I would've preferred any of those going #1 over this. "Payphone" just never did anything for me. The verses are a bit lacking. Sonically, it doesn't sound any different to the songs they were releasing in 2007. The swear words in the chorus always felt forced. Wiz's rap is lame ("man f**k that s**t"... um yeah how long did that take to come up with Wiz?) and it feels really out of place in this song. @jf816

#499. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It? 3 weeks at #1 in 2000 (#37 of 42 for '00)
Welp... it stopped Westlife from getting another Christmas #1, so there's that (even if it was one of their best songs). I really had a hard time ranking this one. It provides a good laugh if I'm in the right mood. But I don't have much use for it beyond that.

#498. Sugababes vs Girls Aloud - Walk This Way 1 week at #1 in 2007 (#15 of 17 for '07)
If anyone's ever looked at my last.fm, you'll know I really like these two girl groups. I'd say they're two of my favourite artists ever. So the idea of them coming together, is of course going to excite me. And that's probably the only reason why this is as high as it is. I think they add their own charm to this song, but it still doesn't quite work. I think it's just the wrong song. They could've picked something better to play up the "rivalry", and have them try to outdo each other. I think that is what they were going for here, but like I said, it just doesn't quite work for some reason.
